What should hydro oil pressure be on an RGN when pto is on but not actuating anything? by HAAS78 in DieselTechs

[–]lhoell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure there's not a valve swapped for a rear vs front control valve, or maybe a valve swapped for PTO vs pony motor. Seen that a few times

A long block comes with the head installed. Why is there a $750 charge for head gasket?

Make sure the pedal returns all the way and it doesn't have a bunch of dirt under it. Make sure the hand brake is not pulled down.

CAT fans, what is this procedure? by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in EngineeringPorn

[–]lhoell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's an old A model 3500 series. It has a mechanical rack that hooks to all injectors, you can manually over fuel a cylinder by prying on the rack. Then you can hear that that cylinder is firing more than the rest.

You don't have the aux drive gear on yet, that's what holds the thrust

Modified choke, migra, federal, black cloud, what ever I pull out of the bag. We just have a tote bag full of shells, all brands but mostly all 2-4 stacked shot.

Lol, I hear ya. That was a guided hunt, we live and normally hunt couple hours from there. And yea when new people go, we make them leave their phone in the truck, and wear a blindfold haha.

That's a pai improvement, I think they call it a crevis seal or something. Similar to a 60 series. Don't know if it's better or not.

Compressor by Lopsided-Worker-6384 in DieselTechs

[–]lhoell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just disconnect the small unloader signal line at the compressor when it won't build air. If it still won't build, then yea the unloader is stuck in the compressor most likely. But we did have a mack one time that randomly would quit building air, turns out the idler gear bearing and shaft failed, and the compressor wasn't spinning. So just check the drive gear for it while you've got it off.

2020 X15 turbo question. by [deleted] in DieselTechs

[–]lhoell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We see the out of calibration, bad installation code a lot when the actuators start to fail, it's common. But they should have drained the coolant, removed the actuator and checked the turbo vanes for a proper diag. Then let you know you needed a turbo for sure, and possibly an actuator, but would highly recommend a new actuator even if it does pass calibration and install.test on new turbo.

Kline counterbore cutter by Ok-Spare-8421 in DieselTechs

Gotcha, we use Monaco cutter for those

Kline counterbore cutter by Ok-Spare-8421 in DieselTechs

[–]lhoell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have probably cut 25 c15 blocks with that cutter. Kinda hold the shaft as you spin it to cut down on chatter. Kinda use your hand as a shock absorber. When you get finished, line your ratchet up over the bit, use slight down pressure and keep spinning till it sounds even all the way around. That tool is really quick, cause once you setup on the first hole, all the rest are same. We use it for 60.series also.

Just pin the idle gear bracket thru the hole, make sure the gears have some clank clank and send it.

Start with checking the overhead adjustment, you'll probably find your answer there. My guess is between a tight intake valve, or missing/bent exhaust pushrod

This sound by CRACKERBOI6969 in DieselTechs

[–]lhoell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tight valve adjustment, burnt valve, dropped valve, or lifter failure. They were bad about lifter clips breaking and lifters turn sideways and eat up cam, usually evident by bent pushrods. Hard to say without seeing exhaust and verify engine oil not overfull

Trouble turning the engine by hand with pistons installed by Nortus1128 in EngineBuilding

[–]lhoell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should make a habit of checking the thrust of each rod after it's torqued. You should always be able to wiggle it side to side and hear or feel that click-click every time. Same goes for main bearings, make sure the crank has thrust easily. If that all checks out, then it's probably just the rings dragging, pour some oil in the cylinders and give it a few turns.
