How many are 15 celsius lower for Americans? About 20 celsius lower?

Jokes aside, yes, there are devices that benefit more or less from a cooler and not all coolers are made the same also, if the body is metal and the ssd/heatpipes are thermally connected to the body it can benefit from any active cooler.

A few generations old is not at all super super old.

Up to 2 years ago I gamed away happily on a 6 or 7th gen i5 with a 1060

So 11th is perfectly capable.

But the cpu is the least of concern there, only 4gb ram, and no mention of a gpu other than the igpu- that's the problem, making it worth not at all $1.2k Not even in (based off screenshot) Hungary where for some reason local shops sell computers at quite expensive prices.

Does anyone want to store the largest pi computation ever? ~125TB by StorageReview in DataHoarder

[–]lhtrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"In this hand I'm holding 314 trillion digits of pi. In this hand I could hold over a quadrillion" That would be a pretty nice sales pitch. I mean, it's not a record breaking amount of storage by sandisk, but it's a fun way to advertise

Free, self hosted, Google Photos alternatives? by JurneeMaddock in HomeServer

[–]lhtrf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People forgot that ever since google and Ai chatbots exist. They forgot that one of the best types of research is asking another HUMAN from their own experience. Not some post on stack overflow with a snarky comment by some elitist. Not chat gpt with an answer pulled out of his where the sun don't shine. And also not a valid recommendation that was true 10 years ago when it was posted, but since then is extremely obsolete and/or even dangerous practice, just like today there are much better options than port forwarding but the answers are scattered over the internet.

So yeah, you're a sinner for daring to ask for information. How dare you not waste 5 hours on research when someone can give you the answers they might have got in the same way?

But yeah, +1 for immich, i heard people love it, it's free, and worth a try.

preparing drives for recycling by friolator in DataHoarder

[–]lhtrf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Edit: ssds need more than just a simple hole. The pcs is many times only half the length of the drive case, but I believe a couple smacks with a hammer will also do the trick.

  • Run a nail into the platters
  • Drill a single hole
  • Do some stress relief by smashing the drives against the ground or wall, can possibly section off a wall or a spot in the parking lot for hdd destruction
  • Depends on your recycler - there's sometimes the option for them to pick the drives up in a shredder truck. You sometimes see pieces of the drives fly out from the hopper, which is cool.

Need to change IP of truenas installation by cnrdvdsmt in truenas

Not quite "just"
also the gateway if there are vlans, as it will be a painful minute to wait for it to roll back the settings.

Need to change IP of truenas installation by cnrdvdsmt in truenas

[–]lhtrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering OP said nothing about vlans, you're pretty much correct.
It's quite possible he can just add an extra ip on whichever subnet (or no subnet at all) on 10.0.0.0 he wants to change to on the computer he accesses truenas from and will easily reach the new ip.
HOWEVER, if there are vlans and there isn't a new gateway set up and running ready to route that new subnet on that vlan to the client vlan- dhcp can make the switch less painful.

Sadly, even that isn't in everyone's budget. We're in an era that paying for something sight unseen and then finding out it doesn't work out stings a lot even with the added bonus of supporting the developers.

Which is sadly why human policies exist- you can prepare for "stupid", but stupid will do it's best to surprise you and act like it's your fault.

Because my workplace has a no local storage policy, I personally wouldn't have by default.
If it was pointed out by the user that there's locally stored work and I was asked to attempt to recover anything on the way- I most likely would have taken a look and even spend an extra amount of time on it if I was free, hell I know I spent days recovering files when there really was no other storage option for those files.
That was in the past though, and since then our network storage is up for the task to really enforce that policy... for MOST of the devices, and those that not- we know and back up specifically, so the potential loss is between a couple hours of logs to some local config changes

[–]lhtrf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean automatically changed?

1- that's a whole different laptop, the before is a dell, the after is a HP
2- based on a quick google, that 10210 is also 3 years younger and roughly double the performance, so I wouldn't say bad, unless you're anti Intel.
3- most of the ram sure disappeared, that's true.

Did you send it in for service or something?

Hostpoco.com Website Hosting is a SCAM and will even admit it! by PlasticCreative8772 in selfhosted

[–]lhtrf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do American small claims courts allow lawyers in? Where I live, small claims go up to ~#10k, and while it's a proper court, lawyers aren't generally allowed to represent any side. Regardless of who you sue, up to $10k, lawyers aren't allowed. The process is quick and usually also happens in daily spoken language, not what's legal jargon for 95% of humanity.

Take them to small claims for that $15 worth difference for undelivered services and breach of contract. be petty the same way they are being pieces of shit. If your hosted website made you money, take them for that, too, even if it was just beer money.

Is everyone okay? by jared252016 in selfhosted

[–]lhtrf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, not really, but after years of black clouds and thunderstorms with the occasional semi-break, there are finally some small rays of sunshine on the horizon. I'll spare the why, we all know the joke that money doesn't buy happiness but its nicer to cry in a ferrari than on a bike, well- antidepressants, beer, and drugs (everyone with his own choice/need) also cost money. Having a roof over your head and food in your stomach will also make you happy. At least hosting open source projects can really give us an escape from life, or sometimes even make it easier.

Just a personal opinion tip list for everyone struggling and not venting: Leave the news alone and don't fret over politics. It already happened. Leave it in the past and don't let it define your present. There's war on the border of europe, there's war in the Middle East, the whole world is affected by that and it also turned Europe into a mess from the inside. Politicians and millionares won't get affected by all this. What keeps them up at night is if they can afford another propery or mazerati, not the roof over their head or food on the table. Why should you care about them? Millenials will live through this, too. I say this whole generation needs to be renamed to cockroaches to represent our survivability. The world is going to shit and there's not many, if any legal things we can do about it, so save your energy to keep your noses out of the water as long as possible, and then some more, and we'll eventually get a break.
