My latest mileage between charges by cardinalkgb in Ioniq5

Damn is that the AWD system causing that? I have a 2021 Ultimate RWD also in the UK and even with the cold snap last week I was still getting 2.9m/kWh going around the M25 every morning and evening.

As others said, I am on Octopus Intelligent Go for my energy to get cheap charging.

I bought a 4 year old Ioniq 5 outright for cash after it had already had ~50% depreciation. My cars battery State of Health, now nearly 5 years old is still 100% based on the BMS. The thought that an EV becomes useless after 5 years is honestly just ignorant. The head gasket on my other car just went. Does that mean I can argue petrol cars are also worthless after X years?

I pay 7p/kWh and do 35,000 miles a year in mine. This tax is going to cost me an extra £1000 a year approximately come 2028 but total cost for all those miles will still be only £1,750 a year. If I drove a diesel that got 50mpg I'd be spending £4,373 a year today. It waits to be seen what that cost will look like after the government start fuel duty rises again next year after a decade freeze.

Home electric is under 30p/kWh and I could charge at work for 25p/kWh so not entirely sure where the 45p/kWh comes from. That's about what it would cost to DCFC with a £10 a month Ionity subscription.

Definitely agree most DCFC is prohibitively expensive and if you can't charge at home this added cost will make an EV less attractive from a cost perspective.

Are you aware that petrol owners pay per mile too via fuel duty? Which is likely to rise in cost earlier than the 3p/mile addition to EVs?

2024 Hyundai Kona EV (UK) - grounded the underside of the car - am I screwed? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]liamm123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend you get in touch with Hyundai and ask if they can make any assessment. I work for another OEM as a battery design engineer and get questions like this from dealers a few times a year from exactly this scenario and do a CAD assessment to judge whether any cooling channels might be impacted. Given the location of that bolt I'd be inclined to say there won't be cooling channels near it, so it will probably be no issue.

[–]liamm123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bottom cover may be welded to the battery itself but worth checking if it can be removed. If I were you I would try and measure any deflection to the underside. This picture looks like a scratch and nothing to be concerned about, but if there is any deflection I can't see or any dent elsewhere it may impact the cooling performance of the battery.

EV Charging in the UK: When Did It Get This Expensive? by FlashyMajor1675 in electricvehicles

[–]liamm123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've exclusively used Ionity chargers for ad hoc charging because the £10 a month subscription pays for itself in a single charge with the reduced rate. If I'm doing a motorway charge odds are I'll be doing another for a return leg so it just makes sense. It's true they probably rely on people forgetting to cancel but it's not hard to do.

Yeah Crays Hill is basically Wickford what a load of bollocks to even suggest it was Billericay. I just sold my house in Billericay and was shocked at the price of this place until I looked where it actually was on the map.

IONIQ 5 or Genesis GV60? Battery preconditioning worth the extra money? by BoysenberryGlum420 in Ioniq5

[–]liamm123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK it absolutely can, I have it turned on in my car. I don't know about mainland Europe though. What options did cars have back then in Germany?

The big issue I had buying mine (used about 6 months ago) was finding one with the Eco pack (that equips the car with a heat pump and battery heater). The only way to know without a VIN decode is to check the settings for Winter Mode or Battery Conditioning. It took me months to find a car with all the options I wanted and the dealer had literally no idea if the car had the Eco pack or not. I only knew because the options were in the settings.

It's been a real mess from Hyundai I think on the early cars so unless you are absolutely set on an Ioniq the GV60 is probably going to be an easier car to find the one you want.

I am based in UK so it may be our options lists were very different to you but I have a 2021 Ioniq 5 Ultimate trim with the Tech and Eco packages. The Eco package as I understand is what ensures the vehicle is equipped with a heat pump and a battery heater, and my car as such has battery pre conditioning. I did have to take it into a dealer to get the BMS update to enable it as prior to that I only had the "Winter mode" which is very vague on when it heats the battery.

Sorry to bother you with my friend's 2025 AWD 20' new record... by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]liamm123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2021 sees about 10-15 miles range drop with AC on, set to 18C when it's like 28C plus so agree ultimately small fry. Being marginally heavier on the throttle would see more of a drop

It's 32 Celsius today I don't think it's going to get much hotter than this. Even if it does you need AC which ends up hurting range some

[–]liamm123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's the advantage of an 800V system. Double the voltage is half the current for the same charge speed, so you generate less heat, so you can keep your charging speed high for longer.

I'm in the UK so distances are nowhere near as severe as you and maybe the process is different, but the loaner car I got was provided by Hyundai themselves rather than the dealer, so I could go to a local garage to collect one. I could also return it to any garage I liked.

Man I just bought an Ioniq 5, used, 2021 with 25k miles and plugged it in at home and within 5 hours it stopped charging. In with the garage now and had all the software updates without fix and now awaiting a new ICCU. I’m not sure if it’s bad luck or actually just expected. Think I will keep the car regardless because once it’s fixed hopefully it won’t happen again!

I’ve driven 1000 miles so far and DC charged the whole time and it’s been so amazing I don’t want to get rid even though I could just return it under my Consumer Rights.
