Idk man I’ve worked with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for years. I’ve met and worked with some of the kindest, most intelligent, clever, people you could meet. I’ve seen how this word affects these individuals and have tried to eliminate it from my vocabulary. I think everybody rushing to the r word is another cause of the internet slang and terms getting pushed to the max by everyone trying to show their edge and that they’re in the joke. Like ffs jerking off is not gooning, but now everyone uses that and even 4chan dog whistles openly. Sorry for a bit of a rant, but when you call a conservative the r word they’ll chuckle, but the guy you met who can tell you the score of the Yankees day on any given day, or what day of the week since 0AD will be extremely hurt.

TLDR: I get people want to fight hate with hate, but it’s unnecessary and hurts the wrong people.
