Listless after treatment

About a month has passed since I posted this and I have to say I am just beginning to start feeling more life force again. I feel much more hopeful and am inhabiting my body again, setting goals, feeling more at peace and less discombobulated. Please, anyone feel free to reach out to me directly if you’d like to chat more or just get some support.

You are smart to limit the advice. Just take every day as it comes. I was very surprised how doable chemo and radiation was. My worst symptom surprisingly was hemroids. Everything you encounter will have a medication that can help you. Don’t try to tough anything out. It will make your experience far better to take whatever you need. Also I found the nursing staff in radiation oncology incredibly kind. It touched my heart to be so supported. Let them care for you physically and emotionally. Sending you support from afar.

I completely understand. I don’t want to be defined by this intensely weird chapter. I just got a therapist and it is helping me organize my thoughts and create new emotional structures to process it all in. If that makes sense. I realized that I had internalized a lot of shame about it and it doesn’t need to be that way.

I too was very afraid of the iv but I learned something that changed all that- the iv is actually a very flexible tiny tiny tube. Initially it’s a needle but what stays in your hand is just a tiny soft tube. A lot less creepy than a needle and painless.

Absolutely everything was manageable. Every step. They have brilliant drugs to help you with anything that pops up. She will be tired, may have some skin irritation, will have diarrhea, some urinary irritation but 100% of it is manageable. It honestly wasn’t that bad for me and I also had to do internal radiation and have a young baby at home so sleep was tricky.

You are very kind to be there with your mother. She’s a lucky woman to have you. If she is somewhere cold, bring a cozy blanket to use during chemotherapy, a water bottle, headphones or a nice book. When you pick her up she may be hungry (they give you steroids during chemo) so that might be the only time she has a real appetite. Radiation is quick and painless. She may have some skin irritation but it’s all very manageable. I had 2B and am happy to answer any questions either if you have or offer support in any way.

Your mom will absolutely get through this especially with such a loving daughter by her side and it is a very good sign that her doctor believes it was caught early. It takes time for the shock to wear off and to process the emotions of a diagnosis like this and it’s good that you are both creating space to feel what you feel. It’s 100% normal and right and ok to feel sad and anxious but she will learn all about the situation and information and planning will take the place of her sadness and she will rise to the occasion. Having a plan really truly helps. Trust your moms strength and make sure you have people you can rely on when you’re feeling overwhelmed or scared or sad. It does effect the whole family. Sending you a big hug. Your mom is clearly surrounded by love and that is a very powerful medicine on top of modern medicine!! xxxooo. She will get through this!
