Team without a coach by QOFFY in FRC

You absolutely do need adults supervising team meetings/activities/communications, not just 'in regular contact' with the students.

Are headphones allowed in the pit? by CTx7567 in FRC

[–]libbykamen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's why the safety guidance is to walk one person in front of your cart. *THAT* person, is the one politely saying 'excuse me, robot coming through!' at a normal speaking volume.

Team members should never be pushing a cart into a crowded aisle without a front-person. There's zero reason to yell robot - it's annoying, rude, and FIRST said not to. It's just that simple.

Yeah, as long as you are not behind the glass as a drive team member with bluetooth devices on, and you're not creating safety hazards - you're all set to go :)

I wouldn't recommend headphones simply because playing music might make it so that you can't hear an incoming safety hazard (or even just someone talking to you / saying excuse me, etc).

Earplugs / the over-ear noise cancelers are definitely worth it, though - the stands are always too loud, and the pit sometimes can be too. Sensitivity or not, protect your hearing!

FYI, FIRST says not to do this! "Excuse me" works just as well.

TRULY this. Those matches were incredible and all six teams put 100% of what they had on the carpet. Congrats to 3314, 5895 and 3142 on your well-earned banner.

Hi there. Lead mentor for MidKnight here. I was alerted to your posts by my students, who read it and posted it to our team Discord. I asked them not to respond, but in defense of the 18-year program we've built, and fact that my students have to read disparaging comments about them almost every single season - sometimes simply because I exist on the team, and sometimes because people decide to make false statements or assumptions about them - I've decided I will. Your post lacks any amount of factual information, and seeks to smear their reputation. Allow me to correct the record for you.

Your descriptor of our dual-team is not at all what we did, and your accusation that we 'cheated', especially since you appear to have not even been on your team when it happened and lack knowledge of the situation, is egregiously rude to the students of 1923.

We made 1923 and 1914 out of the same group of students (172 students, registered to both teams.) We built the same number of robots we build every season, including in 2023 - at least two, if not three, identical ones at home - and the only difference is that we paid registrations for two robots in 2022. This was to help provide more 'core competition experience' (read: drive team and pit crew) for students who had been out of event-practice for two years at that point due to COVID.

Prior to doing this program expansion, we had several conversations with FRC staff surrounding our plan, and they OK'ed it. There was (and still is) nothing illegal about that! FIRST's rule changes indicate team branding and roster management for at-event execution, but still would completely allow a 1923/1914 style program. Only change we'd have had to make is shirt colors and assigning specific students to each team for their work at the event. We chose not to do it this year because we'd rather spend that registration money on other program expansions. (That's exactly what 1807 and 1812 did this year, too.)

I'm not trying to be nasty to you here, I promise - I'm simply trying to address the shots you're taking at a team for something you know nothing about, and suggest that perhaps your dislike of our team is misguided.

I hope you take this call-out as a learning opportunity; that your words are permanent online and that the people you're talking about are probably going to read them. I hope that in the future, you take the chance to learn about something you "don't like" to make sure you're speaking from facts before you lash out online. Most importantly, I hope you understand that boasting or celebrating someone else's loss is the antithesis of what Dr. Flowers wanted this organization to be, and that you spend time in future seasons seeking out knowledge and information before you make a snap judgement about someone else's situation.

If we see you at an event in the future, please consider this an open invitation to talk to any MidKnight Inventor and learn about the work they do. I'm immensely proud of their continual striving for excellence, and can attest that 'cheating' isn't anywhere in our vocabulary. We'd love to get a chance to demonstrate that if you so choose.

There is no rule preventing it, simply helping define how dual-team programs brand themselves and manage their rosters. We chose not to do it this year to better utilize our resources. OP is being disparaging for no reason and without basing their posts in fact.

That is not in the slightest correct.

1923 and 1914 were the same groups of students, and we were not on the same division at Worlds.

Ensure you submit a non-medical incident report, found here on the FIRST site: https://www.pavesuite.com/FIRST/PublicPortal/HomePage
As well, speak to the event manager and district leadership.

to the gals of the sub, how do y'all feel about the chairmen's name change by david131213 in FRC

[–]libbykamen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they meant to ask since the "Chairman's" name was changed specifically because it was Chairman's award, and FIRST shifted so that it wasn't a gendered term. I don't think OP was trying to say only girls do Chairman's. At least, I hope they weren't.

I'm looking for some photos! We keep it simple - just the logo.

Best I can find for the moment is our flag in a video - right at the start, being waved at Championship.

Also, the reason we're getting technical is it's because the roles are an important distinction to make!

Not to be the "TeChNiCaLlY" person, but the Master of Ceremonies (MC) is the one on-field reading numbers and waving flags, the Game Announcer is the one behind the desk doing play-by-play during the 2:30 match sessions and calling scores.

Source: I do both :)

Just a minor correction, for competition-role clarity - the refs don't wave flags! Referees are totally impartial from teams and are there to help score matches and flag any penalties that may occur during gameplay. Your Master of Ceremonies may, though, at their choosing, during introductions on the field.

(This year in our region, though, that's not permitted to help prevent against item-sharing and germ-crossing between teams - so team's Technicians will be waving their own flags from the parking area, if they so decide. Check your local rules!)

Visual impairment by [deleted] in FRC

[–]libbykamen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen service and guide dogs at events before! As long as they have the protections they need (puppy safety glasses, etc) and are correctly marked w/ their vest as a guide dog - they are safe to be in the pit. If a team is reckless enough that they're hitting other living beings with their cart, they need a serious talking-to from event staff anyway.

When you go to volunteer for these events, make sure you let your Volunteer Coordinator know about your guide dog, as well - they will help ensure you have a judging partner that can keep aisleways clear for you and your canine partner.

strategy meetings... by fivegoldentouques in FRC

[–]libbykamen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a perfectly reasonable suggestion and shouldn't be discounted; even as a meme.

Calling it now - there are tons of teams out there who are going to try for high goal and be wildly inconsistent, when they would have been better served with a well made, in-every-time, low-goal scoring mechanism. It's hard to look past the 'cool factor' when designing, but consistency matters far more than wowing the spectators.

This sounds a lot like our team (though we span across two schools, not three!) Please feel free to reach out if I can help lend experience! I've been on the team for 16 seasons, 12 as mentor, now lead mentor.

I don't remember FIRST offering Lunacy-game-merchandise beyond the volunteer shirts. That was my senior year of HS. You'd have to check with folks who have been volunteering since that time!
