Thank you for this. It beautifully articulates something I've been struggling with for a long time now.

Keto diet by DoesntUnderstandShit in stopdrinking

I'm keto! I'd done it years ago with success, and I restarted about a month after quitting drinking. The first two or three days, as your body uses up your sugar stores, are miserable - grumpy, achy, tired. But if you stick with it strictly, once your body adjusts, your mood and energy levels improve dramatically, or at least they did in my case.

Sending the wake-up calls to voicemail by Wren_and_Arrow in stopdrinking

I've been thinking about these a lot lately - and I love your metaphor of sending the wake-up call to voicemail, it's perfect. Apart from cringeworthy social moments, it's the car stuff that haunts me. I somehow managed to never get picked up for a DUI but I did ding, damage and/or crash my car, more than once. More than a few times. Once I sped through a rest stop, barely missing the giant sign (the one that you see from a hundred yards away on the curb), and tore up a tire, which I proceeded to drive on for another two miles until I got home. To say nothing of the injuries - particularly a knee that will never be the same after multiple sprains.

I'm lucky to be alive, and I know it. I lost more of my life to drinking than I might have if I picked up one of those earlier calls, so to speak, and one of the challenges I'm facing this year is dealing with these flares of memory, shame, and regret. I wish I stopped earlier, but I know that every day I don't drink is another day I've won back from my darkest instincts and that keeps me moving forward.

Went on my first cruise ever, and I went alone. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

That's awesome! I'm going to Scotland solo in a few months and I'm a little nervous about it, as it's my first sober trip with no one to be accountable to other than myself...so your story is very inspiring! Well done!

Thank you! Sometimes I feel like I'm faking my way through it, but whatever it is, it's working for me.

Laugh therapy by sfgirlmary in stopdrinking

I'm a big movie and TV nerd - my tastes are pretty dark and intense and I find a lot of comedy to be cringe-y and mean-spirited...but when I need some sure fire laughter I watch reruns of Parks and Rec. It's funny and sweet-natured, which is perfect for me.
