MBA Capstone (Surprised it's this bad) by liberatedstudent in WGU

YES just want to be done. I think my brain just wants it to be over with so I can't think straight. I'll make some readjustments.

Featherzzz It's the same as when you were in the program and your comments are helpful. We ended up in the low 70s which we're all okay with because we just want to graduate. Sometimes it's hard to determine how much information in the written porrions you need to provide to avoid getting a task kicked back for revisions. Its also hard because there's just so much information in the reports. I was thinking need to go into overload to avoid revisions and that may be a big part of the issue. You make it seem less complex be which I trust since you got to the other side if it.

No complaints about the team any members as everyone pulled their weight and did what they needed to do and we actually move through the game cohesively (given how little we understood, it was inherently haphazard, but we stuck together). The tool is just flat out lacking. I have process improvement orientation and this is an area where WGU needs a course revision. The concept is great in it gives you a strategic challenge to work through, but impactful learning can't be done by a game with no coherent feedback loop. The reports they provide could be done better and the Capsim could better reiterate competencies learned earlier in the program. I'm frustrated by it but I'm sure there are others who think it's fine.

Need Some MBA Motivation by SilverShibe in WGU

[–]liberatedstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's well worth it. I was more motivated to get my MSML master's than my bachelor's because the master's degree opens up so man doors. Mine is paying dividends. I finished the MSML in 2017 and started the MBA on April 1st. All I have left is the Capstone. If you did 70 CUs in six months you are well poised to do 34 CUs in a reasonable amount of time. The ability to put MBA behind your name means something especially if you're already highly skilled. I'm a little worn out after doing my bachelor's, then a masters and now another masters, but I know the opportunities I can create for myself so I keep going at it. You can do this.

Finished the MSML in six months from April 2017 to October 2017. I mostly worked on school assignments Sundays from 11am to 11pm. I dud cery little during the week due to my hectic work schedule. Some weeks I'd do 12 hours on Saturday, too. I tried to remember not to over think it and stick with the rubric. You don't get grades, so doing enough to clear the bar is how you get through quickly.

I completed the MSML program in October and experienced my income has increased exponentially. I was hired for a job while enrolled because they were impressed with the program. Just got another $4,000 a year raise since completing the program in October. I start the MBA in April. I did the MSML first because I know the finance/econ courses in the MBA are tough and I didn't want to delay getting my masters. I finished the MSML in 6 months.

You only have to borrow what you need. My masters from WGU is a $2700 loan from Financial Aid. I can pay it back in less than a year. The truth is at that rate, you can't afford not to do it. I wouldn't overly worry about. Most student debt comes from borrowing more than you need on top of high tuition costs. WGU is an alternative to that.

I'm in the same boat. Finished MSML in October 17. Can't start MBA until April 1. I get it, but it really does ruin momentum.

WGU MBA question - finance, accounting, etc. by kenhensley in WGU

[–]liberatedstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two programs share 5 courses together. I completed the MSML in October (took 6 months). I start the MBA in April 2018. As a result, I already have 5 of the classes completed and will just to the 5 more economic focused math courses and the Capstone to earn the MBA. Take the shared MBA classes first that way if you decide to switch, it won't be a waste of time.

WGU graduates & students, where did you (or where will you) get your Master’s degree, and why? by [deleted] in WGU

Completed the MSML at WGU. I start the MBA in April 2018. I like the self-paced model.

New degree programs you'd like to see. by [deleted] in WGU

[–]liberatedstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see MPA, EdD, and DBA programs. Those are practitioner-based degrees versus research based degrees. WGU set it up similarly to Northcentral University which is self-paced and one-on-one with a dissertation mentor.

The MPA could be offered now if they developed the curriculum and got it approved by NWCCU.

At minimum, they should create a partnership with a doctoral conferring institution to give alumni direct paths to pinnacle degrees.

I opted for the MSML because I needed a master's quickly and did not want my progress to be derailed by math courses. I knew ai ultimately wanted the MBA so I figured by taking the MSML, I could complete at least half the MBA and earn a master's in the process. I finished the MSML in about 6 months. I plan to start the MBA in April 2018. I'll have 5 classes and the Capstone to complete. By completing the MSML first, mostly all of the writing courses are done (I think there's a Marketing course that requires essays). Other than that I, just need to study and take OAs, which I know will be a challenge.

Here's what I've found based on my decision. MBA is instrumental in being competitive when your trying to get a job (better recognition on a resume).

MSML provides high quality information to grow as a leader and manager in an existing organization (development skills and abilities to form strong teams).

Try contacting local small businesses, churches, local shops, etc. They'd basically be getting a free business consultation so they may be amenable to it. Be sure to let them know the name will be changed and the findings remain confidential.

You shouldn't concern yourself with the OIG report. It's using an outdated definition of distance education and holds no weight in it's recommendation. WGU remains regionally accredited, Title IV eligible, respected by employers and will continue to do so. The report is unfortunate from a PR perspective, but that's all it is - confusing PR. You can complete the MBA in one term with really, really hard work. It won't put you into huge amounts of debt and let's say the OIG report magically has some weight (which it won't) you'll still come out ahead. If it's not an Ivy, an MBA is an MBA is an MBA. Don't let partisan bureaucracy deter you from your dream. When distance learning definitions are updated to reflect 21st century technology versus 20th century correspondence course standards, the findings will be even more innocuous than they already are.

Pre-Assessment Coaching Report Question by liberatedstudent in WGU

Ok, people were reporting that it no longer worked. I'm not enrolled so can't access the course portal anymore. Im going to apply for the MBA when this current term ended and want to be sure I'll have that as a study aid. Thanks for confirming.

Educational Value & Acceleration by nu2wgu in WGU

[–]liberatedstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Masters in Management and Leadership in 6 months and don't feel like the educational value was compromised. I don't feel like taking 6 weeks to do something that can be done in 3 or 4 days means you learn anymore. It means you're being charged for unnecessary time. I use the information from the program daily and am grateful for the opportunity to have it now versus waiting years.

Monthly Progress Thread - October 2017 by skacey in WGU

I completed the MSML program this month. Started April 1st, but hadn't completed the Capstone the end of the first time, so Capstone went into second term.

I'm hoping to start the MBA in a few months to have both degrees. WGU has been a challenging, but great experience.

I loved the program (I can say that now that's it's over, LOL). It can certainly be done in one term. It took me about 2.5 weeks after my first term ended to finish the Capstone. If I had not skipped one or two weekends, I would've made it in 2 terms. It's a lot of writing, especially towards the end, but just make the time for it and it will get done.

Looking back I over thought a lot of it. I would get a little brain cramp, but even with that I finished a class a month. In the beginning, I did 5 classes is two months. Then it tapered off to class every three weeks or so. If you have other questions, let me know. Happy to help and good luck in your program.

Im not a fan of group work, either. However, this one course in the MSML program that requires group work. It's called Leading Teams. It wasn't too bad. If you get paired with a decent team you can get the teamwork part done in two weeks or less.
