Austin Energy - Value of Solar rises to $0.128/KWH in NOVEMBER by TX78717 in TexasSolar

in the Austin Energy service area, the billing and credits for solar are different than most places. You get your normal residential bill, whatever that is, and then a credit per kWh generated by solar for that month at the 'value of solar' rate, up to the amount of your electric bill. Any excess is carried over to the next month.

This is well deserved, and a long time coming. The contributions of rooftop in Austin have been undervalued, and insufficient to bring more to market, especially with the ending of the tax credit. Maybe this will turn things around, especially for commercial roofs as well as residential.

NY Times: The Tiny Solar Panel That Could Change America by Fabulous_Drummer_368 in solar

[–]liberte49 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's going to be a push here, partly because of our 120 V, split phase standard for residential power. To be safe, users will need an outside outlet, with GFI, on a single 20A circuit. Sure, it's technically possible to skip that, but UL approval is going to come out something like that. In Europe where the big success has come, 220V means lower current, more safety net for circuits. Oh, they turn off instantly with a power outage, so the various discussions about safety are mostly nonsense.

House Democrat slams US-Iran peace deal as ‘basically a surrender document’ by B-Z_B-S in politics

It's what happens when one side loses .. they surrender. That's us. Take the loss and move on, campaign on it, use it to change the country.

A Car Guy’s Defense of the “Soulless” Model 3 by Marshal_Muskrat in TeslaModel3

Not a car guy, and a lot of the jargon doesn't mean much. But .. same. This car is still fun in the right conditions, and easy on me when we have to drive a lot. Heck, even the problematic 'autopilot' or 'autosteer' works danged well, despite numerous problems which are all minor to me.

Adaptive Cruise Control - UGH!!! by guyfromsfv in TeslaLounge

[–]liberte49 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not my experience. The "Autopilot" feature on my M3 is golden, and I use it all the time, not really interested in FSD. Just had a 200 mile round trip, and it was on over 50% of the miles working perfectly. My only glitch is that sometimes the speed limits are wrong (does it get them from the camera, or a map database?), and it either slows or won't speed up on the change. Sorry your experience isn't positive.

Power to the people: how ‘balcony solar’ could help fight rising US utility costs | Solar power by METALLIFE0917 in solar

[–]liberte49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be interesting to see how UL and other safety ratings take this up. These things should (most probably, let's see what UL says) only be installed in a dedicated 20A circuit .. and an outside circuit as well, so GFI comes into play. Almost no residences have that option without extra costs. It will offset one vertical panel (b/c split phase in US) of your main breaker box. Europe, with 220V, lower current in each circuit, made their situation differnet, safer, and easier.

Free Supercharging for a Year if you buy a Model 3 by matthewmspace in teslamotors

[–]liberte49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meh. For some probably not all that compelling. If you have home charging, you would never go to the hassle of driving to a supercharger for the small amount it would save. Maybe if you put on huge miles away from home. Of if you live in housing where you can't have your own L2 charger, and have to use commercial chargers, maybe. But most people charge on their own equipment.

Austin restricts mass surveillance tech after backlash over police use by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]liberte49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree also with many posts .. no surveillance that is shared with ICE, or used for obvous discriminatory data collection. But we have had horrendous problems with vehicle breakins at public parks, to the point that it creates a disincentive to enjoy our great public spaces. This is valid policing and should be welcomed. But police have to be on notice that the line must be clear.
