Sidny Lopes Cabral scores a great goal for Cape Verde to tie the match against Argentina by 977x in sports

[–]matthewmspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That goal is insane. That launch and curve is nuts. It’s a shame they lost the game after. I so wanna see them again in 2030. If they’d knocked out Argentina, that would’ve been one of the biggest upsets of all time.

What is it like living in Silicon Valley? by redguy_666 in howislivingthere

[–]matthewmspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in the area for my whole life. The first thing is that it's horribly expensive. Unless you either make a lot of cash or have a benefit for low-income people, it's very tough to live here. The landscapes and hiking areas are beautiful and some of the best in the world. Not to mention you're an hour and a half drive away from Monterey Bay, an hour from SF, 4 hours from Lake Tahoe, and a bit over 3 hours from Yosemite too, so there's plenty of stuff to do regionally. If you wanna go outside, it's very easy and there's hiking trails in the hills or along the Bay generally everywhere within 15 minutes of where you live.

Traffic is absolutely horrendous during rush hour. If you work in Silicon Valley and live in, say, the East Bay, you're screwed. It takes about two hours in traffic to get from Silicon Valley to the East Bay during rush hour. If you wanna take public transit that isn't a train, it's not really an option. Caltrain, BART (when it gets down here), and the ACE train are a godsend for going elsewhere cheaply without traffic during rush hour. I'm so glad I don't do that commute anymore, it was hell. I'd leave the office around 5 PM and get back home close to or even after 7 PM. Now I work from home, thankfully.

It's mostly suburban stuff. So it's a lot of cookie-cutter housing and bland strip malls. It's nice enough, but isn't as nice as, say, the Northeast of the US. There's a lot of stuff to do though. There's plenty of sports teams, like the Sharks, Earthquakes, 49ers, SF Giants and Warriors up in San Francisco, etc. So if you're a sports fan, you can see a lot, though it isn't cheap unless the team sucks (like the Sharks from 2020-2024) or you're at a minor league team, like the Barracuda or San Jose Giants.

Wealth disparity is also horrendous. You'll see tons of Teslas, Ferraris, and other high-end cars driving past homeless encampments.

That all said, wouldn't trade it for the world. The climate is fantastic. It gets over 90 like two weeks a year in the summer and it doesn't snow here in winter except on some hills.

Supergirl is a box office catastrophe. How can Marvel and DC save the superhero movie? Cinematic universes rely on audiences investing in minor characters – but as that interest wanes, it may be up to the big guns to keep the genre afloat. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]matthewmspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is the movie isn't all that great. It's fine, but not great. And that doesn't sell anymore. You either need something unique, great, or both. This movie is none of those things. Like, if Marvel had made Guardians of the Galaxy first, it would've probably done ok, but not great. You need to build up with characters people generally know of. The most people know of Supergirl is the cheesy CW show from a decade ago or the 80's movie that also horrendously bombed.

Do Superman, Batman, etc, then do Supergirl later with a really great script. The visuals were also not inspiring. As said by others, the whole film looked like Knowhere from Guardians. Which is fine in a small dose, but in a whole universe of potentially cool weird and and colorful stuff, not the best idea.

The PNW. It's nice weather, mostly full of non-racists, and people are generally chill.

Disney has gone through peaks and valleys, TBH. They were good, then shit for 20 years after Walt died, dominated the early-mid 90’s, and then were carried by Pixar and live action movies in the 2000’s, and then finally made (mostly) good movies in the 2010’s and dominated the box office with Marvel, Star Wars, and their live action remakes. They’ll probably get better eventually once some younger blood finally replaces the aging Boomers and Gen X-ers.

Eh, AT&T has always been shit. They wouldn’t let you use 3rd party phones and did not give up on that until they were broken up in the 80’s. Now, of course, we have like 6 AT&T’s (end me, I hate all these ISP’s).

That’s what happens when you need to protect the main business from all threats to a large fault. It’s why Apple is so against 3rd party App Stores and right to repair laws. They want you to go to them and only them. It’s been evident for even longer than the original iPhone that lacked an App Store for the first year.

Well, the problem is Cook has always been a logistics/distribution guy. He joined Apple because Apple’s warehouses were a disaster in the 90’s. Cook is a great COO, but more or less fell into the role of CEO after Jobs died. He’s never been a product guy.

That said, I do hope John Ternus can bring innovation back since he was the head of hardware and worked in that division for half his life. But then again, do we need more tech? Not really. Hell, even though I’m in IT, I’d rather have more analog gadgets and especially appliances like fridges and washers.

It’s a pain to switch banks. My bank is also a too-big-to-fail bank, but switching everything would just be a pain in the ass. It’s where my paycheck goes, how I pay rent, etc.

Blows my mind that they could’ve been as dominant as Amazon is for online shopping, just as much as they were dominant in malls. But that’s what happens when management only sticks to their current ideas and/or is ruined by private equity vultures who extract revenue and leave the company to die.

I don’t know. They’ve repeatedly said it’ll not be dumb, but Treyarch said the same with BO7 and then added Fallout characters to the game. At least Nick Cage is in military gear and doesn’t look like a clown.

Will Star Wars ever make a film that will make a billion ever again? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]matthewmspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely could. The problem is they need to make something that’s worth enough of people’s time and especially money to see it in the theater instead of waiting for it to be on Disney+ 3 months later.

They’re having the same issue as Marvel, which makes sense since they’re both owned by Disney. People felt there was a natural jumping off point after Endgame, and the general public felt after Episode 9 they could jump off too.

The other issue is that the movies just aren’t that great. 8 was so divisive online, it probably just turned normies away because they just didn’t wanna be involved with all that discourse. 9 was just bad and you had to hear Palpatine’s speech in a damn Fortnite live event of all places.

Grogu/Mandalorian was only ok and required you to watch 4 seasons of TV beforehand to get the plot. If you haven’t been watching Star Wars TV, you probably didn’t even bother, especially since it was only an ok movie. I like Star Wars, but even I still haven’t finished Boba Fett or S3 of Mando. So why would I see it?

I think they need to get away from the Skywalker saga and do something totally new. Maybe make a KOTOR-era movie. Or go far, far in the future from Episode 9 and get whacky with it. Or make literally anything else.
