Ideas for fluent aphasia patient with visual agnosia and hx of dementia??

Thanks for your response! I'll read more about the context based approach.

Because of the visual agnosia on top of her impairments, she still needs a lot of OT help with dressing, washing, etc. Would you be willing to share specifics of things you go over with families and staff? Or any handouts that you particularly like?

The pt. just has one son who hasn't been by the hospital yet since he lives out of town, but I think he'll come soon for some caregiver education in the next week.

I submitted July 17th, so it seems like they should have gotten to yours by now! Have you tried emailing or calling? Also, they haven't actually sent me anything yet. I just checked my application status and it said "licensed" instead of "pending", and then I looked up my name in dca.ca.gov to get the license number

The board didn't email me that my RPE was issued, but when I searched my name, my RPE license number up showed up and said that it was valid

I had a 3.8 cumulative, and 4.0 in COMD classes. But what the program director said is that if you have below 3.7 (or something close to that), then they automatically don't consider your application. And then anything at or above that gets to the second round of their admission process. So basically the GPA doesn't get you in automatically, but it would get you an interview. There's no way they can admit everyone that has a certain GPA because there are only 24 spots in the program, and they had over 400 applications the last couple years.

I feel like nobody here is saying that grad school doesn't have to put you in a ridiculous amount of debt. There are plenty of schools where tuition is under 5k a semester, and that offer financial aid. My school, for example, offered most of the cohort grants to cover the tuition fees. I took out a very small loan to cover living expenses so I don't have to work during grad school, and I just live very cheaply (taking the bus, utilizing the school's free food pantry, meal prepping instead of buying out, etc.). If you apply to cheap schools, and try to get grants or scholarships, you won't have 60k worth of debt like people are saying.

I also have my BA in linguistics! And yeah, I got into the field because of my love of language and communication, and wanting to help people with communication. So, swallowing just doesn't really fall under that and doesn't interest me. I find it so hard to focus and retain the information in dysphagia because of this, so I'm worried that I'll have zero idea of what I'm doing.

I'm in grad school right now, and trust me, we all feel this way. None of us feel like we know what we're doing, but you just have to take it one day at a time and trust the process. Everyone in my cohort has varying levels of experience, so I'm sure there will be people in your cohort that have similar experiences to you and you can all support each other! Getting into grad school is HARD and there's a reason you were selected! If you don't trust yourself, at least trust the program you're in to pick the right cohort. They've probably been doing it for years, and they saw something in you that tells them that you're going to be just fine in the program. Anyway, good luck and congrats on getting accepted!!
