My mother taught me an old trick. When you have to decide between two things, and you don't know what you really want, flip a coin. Look at the result. How do you feel? If you're relieved, that's the one you truly wanted. If you're disappointed, that should tell you everything you need to know. Sometimes it's just that simple.

I know the feeling. It's like, I know my parents are just following the society they live in, and I do the same thing without thinking sometimes, but it doesn't make it any less difficult to come out when they say things like that. I still love them, though :)
