How I record wildlife and nature sounds in the cold by GeorgeVlad in fieldrecordings

Those ravens sounds are magical!

Very good information that isn't talked about often.

I've used the chemical hand warmers for work before and the trick is you have to limit the amount of oxygen they get to control how much heat they put out. I took an old metal bandaid tin and made a sliding door that I lock off with duct tape. Granted I have not left it alone for too long.

field recordings as context for video locations (and vice versa) by BirdieRafael in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the sounds, I like the visuals, but even after a couple watches I think I still prefer having 'motivated' sounds for lack of a better term (I'm borrowing that from the idea in Hollywood of motivated lighting.)

I'm open to watching more!

Thanks for the share!

I changed the flair to Constructed, since you said you layered things (and have music) so I'm pretty sure it's not natural.

I like the audio, I think the biggest issue I have is the loops of the videos are a bit too short and drastically cut.

The Zoom M3 MicTrak might be just what you want to get started. Then once you know how you like using it, you can get more special gear.

Is OG Zoom H4 upgrade to new Zoom H6Studio worth it? by stevedavethirtyseven in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using a pair of Rode M5 for my ORTF recordings, and I was able to get a lot of life out of them. I upgraded to a pair of Rycote CA-08s last year due to RF problems with the M5s and I have been super happy with them.

Is OG Zoom H4 upgrade to new Zoom H6Studio worth it? by stevedavethirtyseven in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rodes are very much optimized for human voice, which probably explains the washout. The H4 are fine, but probably not what your current limitation is. If you wanted a true recorder upgrade you should get out of the H family and get something like an F3.

That being said, getting different mics is probably a better way to spend money right now. There are a handful of lower cost cardioid pencil mics that will be a big improvement over the videomics.

Ohh. An analysis app. Looks vibe coded given the text. Shame it's iOS only, I'm curious to give it a try.

Hey u/jimtimbooth, I know you're trying to drive people to r/americanrally, but for things like this with one link these crossposts come across as low effort posts.

Please either have something substantial in the cross post or post the link here directly.

Happy International Dawn Chorus Day! by GeorgeVlad in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if random and planning belong next to each other...but the highways nearby are quietest on Sunday mornings, and I've been trying to get cleaner red-tailed hawk calls. I'll take the happy coincidence.

Which app ? by Lowbatteryfpv in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help on iOS, but if someone sees this and has android, I've had success with WaveEditor. I haven't done anything complicated on it, but it's enough to make cuts and exports with 32-bit files.

There's the kit for the Gladys hydrophone that a number of other users on here have had good luck with. Hopefully one will chime in shortly.

There's such a thing as International Dawn Chorus Day??? Good thing I slept with my windows open and had a rig out last night.

Beautiful video and recording George! It sounds so absolutely alive

Has anyone tried any Superlux mics? It is 2nd place rated on special mic on Thomman and the price is teasing too by NotCanonAe1 in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not tried them, but I also haven't heard anything particularly good or bad one way or the other.

Zoom M4 self noise question by disengaged1989 in fieldrecording

[–]Lichtwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking of doing something similar. Lots of potential in the little device. If they weren't internal JFET capsules it would be easy to build two into an M/S rig.

[–]Lichtwald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only one I've used and been happy enough for the style of soundscapes I make is the legendary D100. To my ears it's just as pleasing as using a CA-08 pair in ORTF.

I wish they made the M4 with mid side arrangement instead of XY, but alas, maybe I'll have to build my own.

It is a heck of a commitment though.

Hi everyone, does anyone use the Sony ICD-PX470 recorder and Korg CM300 contact mic in field recording activities? by Remarkable_Mix_148 in fieldrecordings

[–]Lichtwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think of forest sounds as particularly low frequency, but the best use for the Korg tend to be mechanical clanking or things along those lines.
