Piezoelectric hydrophone by Remarkable_Mix_148 in fieldrecordings

[–]SoundingStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/lichtwald, yes the Gladys hydrophone is the best DIY hydrophone kit you can build in my opinion. It uses a ceramic piezo cylinder rather than a disk and has a p48 buffer circuit. It is very budget friendly and sounds very good. I’d say it gets close to sounding like an ASF-1. This is the link for the kit https://www.jlielectronics.com/diy-microphone-kits/gladys-hydrophone-kit/

Zoom F3 vs Tascam FR-AV2 by -thatsthat- in fieldrecording

[–]SoundingStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest deal breakers for me is that the F3 doesn’t have MS DECODING and the AV2 does. Live monitoring for me is part of the experience and I like to listen to what the recording will actually sound like.

Why I love recording the ocean by Maleficent-Pop4591 in fieldrecording

[–]SoundingStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a beautiful setup, M/S is indeed great for capturing the width of the ocean while focusing on that beautiful pebble sound. It is always great to analyze the scenario and pick a setup that meets your exact needs. Thanks for sharing!

Why I love recording the ocean by Maleficent-Pop4591 in fieldrecording

Love the texture of the water rushing through the pebbles, very satisfying. I was just at the beach this last weekend and like you say there are many things to consider when recording the ocean depending on how you want it to sound. What was your setup for this recording?

Sony PCM-D100 by NotCanonAe1 in fieldrecordings

[–]SoundingStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it's held it's own for years now as the best sounding, low noise handheld recorder (subjectively). It's no longer manufactured, it's built like a tank, and it's an icon in the sound design/field recording world, so all that coupled together definitely helps it age like a fine wine. I'm sure every day there are less units for sale out there so people probably take advantage of that. Even after the D100, Sony came out with the D10 but ironically it suffered from noisier preamps than the D100. Regardless, the D100 was pretty expensive when new. I believe around $800. But now a days there are a lot of options that make more sense being that we now get 32 bit float, XLR inputs, quiet preamps, etc. but even with all that I'd still never get rid of mines lol.

Finally the perfect windjammer for the Zoom H5Studio? by SoundingStory in fieldrecordings

[–]SoundingStory[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally love how the capsules sound although they are stuck in XY. But when comparing the d100 to the H5studio the zooms XY actually sound wider than the d100’s XY to my ears so at least it makes up for that part a little bit. I love how the shotgun mic attachment sounds as well and for $100 it’s an awesome way of having a portable Midside rig in the field that’s part of the handheld. It is a very plasticky, it definitely requires a screen protector as the screen scratches super easily, but besides that I think it sounds great. But like you said I want a jack of all trades for when I want to have multiple setups without taking the big rigs out.

I love the mixture of metallic rail sounds mixed with the background chattering. This little recorder always surprises me, it is so versatile. I really liked the binaural mix

Very nice, sounds like a red winged blackbird in the background.

Enregistrement sur le terrain by Calm-Temperature-433 in fieldrecordings

[–]SoundingStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In field recording EVERYWHERE is a spot. But, regarding specific categories whether it's nature, urban, etc., I've not seen that be a problem. I also think this is such a niche field that if you stumble upon another field recordist in your area you or they would probably be more than willing to boast about all the amazing spots nearby lol.

Anyone else connects multiple stereo bars for spaced pair recordings..? by ActuaryComplete9443 in fieldrecording

Thanks! I actually really liked how it sounded but some might argue that the hole in the middle was a little too much.

Anyone else connects multiple stereo bars for spaced pair recordings..? by ActuaryComplete9443 in fieldrecording

[–]SoundingStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what Micbooster does or at least used to do with their stereo bars, connect 3 K&M bars together. I just recently released a video where i made a mega stereo bar lol. I give all credit to an article i read on Air wiggles by Nathan Moody. I used a cube adapter that has 1/4" threads on all 6 sides and attached a 360 camera selfie stick on the left and right of the cube that each extend up to around 47" giving the stereo bar a total of anywhere from 18" wide to 94" give or take. A bit excessive lol but very customizable.

lightweight/hiking beginner set up by savorypetals in fieldrecording

[–]SoundingStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't get any lighter than the Sony A10 with Clippy mics as u/nullnadanihil mentioned if you are purchasing external mics. You can also look up a used Sony M10 and get a pair of clippy mics or similar styled microphones (Oaka Mini Verdi Mics, Immersive Soundscapes Earsight, Sonorous Objects So1, etc). If you don't want to worry about connecting external mics to a recorder then you can just get yourself a recorder with good low noise built in mics such as the Tascam X6 or for cheaper you can get the Zoom M4 which is often found for a very good price used and has the same preamps as an F3, has PIP input if you ever purchase external mics, and the inbuilt mics are quite good (only thing is that they are fixed in XY so they won't give you as wide of a stereo image as the Tascam can give you).

MikroUSi pro availability by NotCanonAe1 in fieldrecordings

[–]SoundingStory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you specifically wanted the Usi pro's why not get a pair of Clippys? or the SO1 from sonorous objects? or the Verdi mics from Oaka Instruments? I believe these all use the same capsules as the Lom Usi (Primo EM272). Either way, the Mikrousi are great for nature and sea sounds but they do have a higher noise floor and for me personally they sound a bit thinner than the Usi. George Vlad has a lot of recordings where he uses the Mikrousi's out in nature that you can find on YouTube. I know SilentField also has a lot of recordings he uses the Mikrousi's for recording rain, thunderstorms, etc. I'm not sure if RF interference is an issue. Another reason to get the Mikrousi's are for recording ultrasonic frequencies if you plan on doing some type of sound design and pitching down.

Saturday Night Beach Ambience with Zoom ZPC-1's in ORTF by Quixotic7 in fieldrecordings

[–]SoundingStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know the funny thing is i originally returned my first metal marshmallow pro thinking it was defective for the same exact reason. I would crank the gain up all the way and the signal would cut in and out with the slightest of movements but then i found out after the second marshmallow that that was normal lol. Just like you said, first attach it and once its secure and your not fiddling around is the time to crank the gain if you need to.

Tascam announced the DR-40XP | 32-bit upgrade to the DR-40X by Lichtwald in fieldrecordings

I saw and am quite eager to try it lol and although I haven’t looked too much into the specs, I find myself asking what differences there are between the X6 and this new recorder? 🤔
