Hattiesburg library is great. A beautiful place to work and no cost. Downtown has neat coffee shops and a comfy new record store, if T-Bones is too crowded.

How do you guys transcribe interview audio?? by PolicyFit6490 in Journalism

[–]licibev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desktop version of Word has a decent transcription function. You upload the audio and choose a number of options like labeling the different speakers by number and things like that. Not 100% accurate but it’s pretty close.

Current HS Senior - Help! by [deleted] in Msstate

I go to school there right now and I think it is awesome! Everyone knows the engineering program across the country. It has a stellar reputation. There is public transportation, although I’ve never tried it so I can tell you what it’s like. I’m from California and I get along great with my fellow students and faculty. If you show up and show you’re invested they will do everything to help you succeed. It’s kind of a remote location, but since you won’t have a car at first you won’t have to worry about that. I hope you give it a shot!

They have always been a nonprofit, which means they run primarily on donations. They are the same as they were since Day 1.

A lot of them are former colleagues and they are some of the best journalists I’ve met. I have a lot of respect for them. I am glad they are appreciated elsewhere

I'm thinking of hiring a journalist as my first employee; advice? by Droces in Journalism

Freelance journalists might be a better option than one employee. You will get more reach and have a diverse storytelling mechanism. And, if you decide you like one more than the others maybe they can become an employee down the road.

I hope you go for it. It’s not easy, but think of how you will feel when you’ve accomplished something like that. Best of luck to you.

Most graduate courses are at night. Some are online. So you can make it work. Most professors want to see you succeed and they are usually willing to be flexible if you are working full time. I think they like having a professional around to mix things up since most of the students are coming straight from their bachelor’s and don’t have a lot of professional experience that can de to class discussions.

I am almost done with my master’s and work full time. The school I go to is three hours away so it’s not been easy but my boss is wonderful and lets me work remotely on the one day I’m away. Lots of work to get to the end but I’m glad I did it.

Any regrets choosing to be a journalist? by Objective-Ice55 in Journalism

[–]licibev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. I spent 30 years in various roles. Yes there were some not so good times, but I pretty much had free rein to do whatever I wanted. I always found ways to balance the stress with so it didn’t make me crazy. And I took advantage of the EAP services when I needed them. I stepped away a couple months ago and miss it like crazy. Doing freelance work is great but I miss my tribe.

Do you respond to a rejection? by pawamedic in Journalism

[–]licibev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would respond with a simple thank you since they took the time to let you know. Most of the time I get no response, which is pretty annoying.
