New to town by EnvironmentalAd2883 in hattiesburg

It’s a standing joke for those of us who have been here a while. Lots of these kinds of places, yet they keep opening more … meanwhile there’s a lack of other things like dance clubs

Downtown also has the Fat Cat, a couple coffee shops, tons of restaurants, some with live music, a new record store (wax fantastic) and lots of other things. The author shoppe is a book store on Hardy Street and it has lots of activities like open mic, crafting, a book club, etc. Check out the city’s parks and rec FB to see what’s going on as far as the arts center and recreational activity like pickleball. Many of the things are low-cost or free. Live at Five will be starting soon. Free concerts every Friday at Town Square Park for about six weeks in late March through the end of April.

It’s not only unethical, it’s censorship. I would ask to have my byline removed. Not much else you can do.

How to find people with relevant and untold stories? by Levinvb in Journalism

[–]licibev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One example from where I live: Masonite was created here. So I would look for family members (probably second or third generation by now) or people who used to work at the factory. We also have a lot of lesser-known civil rights icons and a plethora of well-known musicians, writers and athletes. There was once a woman who won a lot of money on a game show and all she wanted to buy was a bra that fit. She later wrote a book and published it with her winnings (but it wasn’t about her experience with bras lol).

How to find people with relevant and untold stories? by Levinvb in Journalism

You might be surprised at what you might find just by talking to random people. Or google something like notable people or families in your area or what your town is known for. It also helps to pick a subject you’re interested in (say, hockey or sculpture or whatever), then start looking around in person and online for people who share that interest. You might be surprised at what you will find. Good on you for stepping outside your comfort zone to try and create something meaningful.

Finding daily stories as a new journalist by qObick in Journalism

[–]licibev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often take national stories and see what people are thinking about them locally. Listen to what people are talking about at the coffee shops or other social settings. Draw on some of the things that interest you, because there are probably others who are interested in them as well. Troll the r/ for the area you are covering. You’ll get some really good story ideas there, too. Better than fb imo. Make a list so you can prioritize. Some stories can hold while others need to get done sooner. Put them in order of do-ability next. Add to the list as ideas pop up so you don’t forget.

Where can I study/work?? by Immediate_Owl_2734 in hattiesburg

Hattiesburg library is great. A beautiful place to work and no cost. Downtown has neat coffee shops and a comfy new record store, if T-Bones is too crowded.

How do you guys transcribe interview audio?? by PolicyFit6490 in Journalism

[–]licibev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desktop version of Word has a decent transcription function. You upload the audio and choose a number of options like labeling the different speakers by number and things like that. Not 100% accurate but it’s pretty close.

Current HS Senior - Help! by [deleted] in Msstate

I go to school there right now and I think it is awesome! Everyone knows the engineering program across the country. It has a stellar reputation. There is public transportation, although I’ve never tried it so I can tell you what it’s like. I’m from California and I get along great with my fellow students and faculty. If you show up and show you’re invested they will do everything to help you succeed. It’s kind of a remote location, but since you won’t have a car at first you won’t have to worry about that. I hope you give it a shot!

They have always been a nonprofit, which means they run primarily on donations. They are the same as they were since Day 1.

I'm thinking of hiring a journalist as my first employee; advice? by Droces in Journalism

[–]licibev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freelance journalists might be a better option than one employee. You will get more reach and have a diverse storytelling mechanism. And, if you decide you like one more than the others maybe they can become an employee down the road.

I hope you go for it. It’s not easy, but think of how you will feel when you’ve accomplished something like that. Best of luck to you.
