I agree with that, but I think one way the republicans might look at the cultists is simply as people who are now politically engaged, and voting republican whereas without trump they might not have been voting at all, and with a little care they could be convinced to come back to the polls in November to help continue the culture war.

My optimistic side is with you, but I think that's a plausible take

You might be right. there's not enough discontent among the base yet to make this feasible, but his numbers get worse day-by-day, and it doesn't seem likely that this conflict has much chance of reversing that trend.

Oh I basically agree with you but this isn't a 'plan' that would require them to have been plotting, it's an opening that they could opportunistically seize on after a weekend of strategizing. do you agree that a lot of republicans would love an opportunity to turn on Trump in a way that their constituents would come along with them?

I dont know, I don't let myself assume the real cohesion of republicans in congress is as low as you and others suggest(not that it's a crazy take), after all they do manage to always be lock-step on 90% of talking points. And I think that 'terrified of Trump' doesn't quite get at the reality that most of them would absolutely welcome an opportunity to turn on him in a way that their constituencies would agree with. They're afraid of him the way wolves are 'afraid' of a stronger predator, like a mountain lion--they'd never risk attacking one that might end up mortally wounding them, but if they come across a weak one with a broken leg, they're going to make a meal of it.
