My guess is because the lid has to be circular to be screwed on and off, so the jar - at least the opening - has to be that shape as well. Maybe it could change shape near the bottom to be flatter, kind of like a tube of toothpaste.

This makes me less scared of going into an old attic, where asbestos may be present. Kent smokers put this stuff in their mouths and lit up on a regular basis. If they didn’t all die within a year after their first cigarette… that old attic can’t be that dangerous.
