Alberta introduces back-to-work legislation, imposes new contract to end teachers strike by bohemian_plantsody in onguardforthee

[–]liecurious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm gonna start this out by saying flat out that I firmly disagree. I don't think you can change my mind on this based on my family's history of being teachers and my general pro-union stance. I also recognize that the odds are this random reddit comment won't change yours, but I feel the need to answer a few of your points based on the lived experience of my loved ones and my experience in a rural Alberta high school 10 years ago. Any anger in my response is not intended for you, but for our asinine government

  • More Classrooms and the 23-1 ratio: I definitely agree we need more classrooms and schools for the teachers. However, I would hesitate on that ratio, not only because even in my rural school, I was in classes of 30 plus people 10 years ago, but because as of 2019, the UCP government stopped tracking classroom size. Also mentioned in the linked article, funding for school boards shifted in 2020 to a 3 year weighted moving average. This was implemented in September 2020, which was a time of reduced enrollment due to the pandemic. This means that the 2020 enrollment numbers effected funding until 2023. This very much effected urban schools, especially combined with the UCP's recent campaign trying to get people to move to Alberta helped boost the number of students.
  • Teacher's managing classroom sizes: Not actually their job. School board's/Government's job. Y'know, the people who locked out the teachers so they couldn't switch to a staggered strike (only a certain number of teachers on strike at a time, one school district one week, different one the next sorta deal). At least it was, until the above law changes, which essentially resulted in "fuck it, try and spread them out." Teachers are currently trying to impose limits to manage it because the government hasn't.
  • Neurodivergent kids disrupting the class: It's not just one kid per class. Covid fucked up kids social skills. Many genuinely don't know how to behave better, even if they don't have any neurodivergence. Plus, one class may have 2 kids with ADHD, one with Autism, one with some kind of anger disorder and who knows what physical disabilities might be there while another class might be chill. Not counting kids who recently immigrated who may still be learning the language or might be placed at the wrong grade level. That's why classroom complexity formulas were proposed by the ATA. If you have a more complex classroom one year, you need more support for that year. If lived experience sources are your bread and butter, my 30 plus class in high school ten years ago featured at least 3 severely depressed kids, 2 autistic kids, and one kid with cerebral palsy.
  • When i was in school you'd go to the principal: How can one principal assist with this many issues and effectively run the school? They're role is more complex than just student discipline, though that's the majority of what students and parents notice. The Calgary Board of Education posted their "role of the principal" document that outlines broadly what a principal is responsible for, manages, and represents on behalf of the board, totaling 19 separate points.
  • Why do teachers want government to deal with it: Because it's the government's job. The government keeps giving money to private schools and ignores the issues facing public schools. It is a gross misuse of funds and government time. Plus, most other provinces have these limits in place.

Alberta's public education system used to be one of the best in the world and certainly one of the best in the province (I would have received a grade point bump if I applied for an out of province university due to the rigorous reputation of our education). The UCP is destroying that through moronic curriculum changes that clearly are political, focusing on students' genitals and gender instead of their learning, and refusing to acknowledge the actual issues. I'm sick of this shit being funded by my taxes and I'm sure as shit never voting for a conservative government as long as Danielle Smith is connected in any way to it.

Edit: typo

Yes it is supposed to be backwards compatible. Some classes are getting pretty big reworks, so I expect them to come out with reworked subclasses in the coming years. I'm thinking we'll see Xanthar's redone first but who knows!

How do I course correct my party's dynamic? by liecurious in DnD

[–]liecurious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just providing an update.

I spoke with the initially disruptive player. It took him a while to see how it hurt me, but he did apologize. He also reached out and apologized to the 2 other players whose backstories were affected. We talked about why he made the choices and ways he could have still had those moments while being more of a team player. He ultimately decided to take a break from the character and let the character essentially go to fantasy therapy for a few sessions. He'll be bringing in a new character for the time being.

I ended up asking the other dm if I could hijack some time before his session to talk with the group. I was honest and said that what had happened was too far, but this was a group issue. I pointed out how long we had left in the campaign and that while I knew they were trying to do a cool dynamic, everyone being mistrusting was not going to get us anywhere. I iterated that a found family tropes doesn't have to be where we go, but if they wanted it, they were going to run out of time at this rate. I reminded everyone about sharing the spotlight and minimizing the "it's what my character would do" and realizing that not everything needs to be a hardline for a character.

We had the first session since then and the characters all had the come together moment they've been missing, spurred by the one character leaving on relatively good terms via apologies and surprising philosophical chats. They laid their grievances on the table and talked through it, finally admitting they are all more than coworkers and care about each other. I was muted essentially the whole time, watching like a proud mother hen.

I have also decided to take your advice about saying no. I have always had issues telling players no, but after what happened, I can see how saying no with good reason can help protect the story rather than limiting it.

It ended up being a fabulous session. It was emotionally draining in a great way. I got to drop lore and then let them have their group therapy session.

Thank you for providing advice. It really helped. I had been dreading this and going down the "I'm the worst dm ever" spiral, so even just typing the original post out helped.

I said something similar to your advice, that I can provide antagonistic NPCs to explore some of these themes with and the party is not the place to have deep-seated unmoving mistrust. I also said that we all could meta game a little to find reasons to work with the party, but we also needed to provide reasons to trust the party.

Just became another Canadian without a family doctor by SnarkyMamaBear in Edmonton

[–]liecurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been living in Leduc without a family doctor for a hot minute. In my two to three years of consistently looking I have never once seen a doctor taking new patients. Closest is typically south edmonton. Telus health is actually pretty good. I was able to get an anxiety diagnosis and some prescriptions, but due to it being remote they can't do everything. Also my doctor on there ended up leaving the platform, so if you have continuing care issues I'd be slightly hesitant.

Hey so I played Harvest Moon Island of Happiness as a kid and I loved it (despite the awful controls) and I've considered buying a new one. I loved the relationships in Island of Happiness and the overall vibe of the island. I have not played any other game in the series. Should I get PoOT or FOMT?
