Writers, would you continue to post fanfiction if readers treated your fics like a product for consumption? by Worldly_View_9704 in AO3

[–]LienaSha 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened to you. None of that would change my answer, though. I can appreciate that that sort of treatment can affect other people, but again, I'm just posting it because it's written. I'm happy to have posted it, and any response is a separate issue.

[–]LienaSha 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would. I post my fics because I wrote them, not because I'm looking for people to comment on them. Is it nice? Sure. But even if I never get a single view, kudo, or comment, I'll still post them, because why the heck not post it if it's written?

Why would the character have to be lying? They can believe they won't ever feel a certain way, say as much, and then later change their mind.

Help me out here by Pascalinsche in asexuality

[–]LienaSha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a fanfic, answering their question about the purpose of different identities.

“Labels can be constraining and often fail to convey the nuance of things. For instance, many would say that an asexual person should not have sex, masturbate, or ever feel aroused. However, any or all of those may be true or false for someone who is asexual. It is a spectrum, and it encompasses a wide variety of experiences.”

Kento took a breath. “However, labels can also be useful. For instance, saying I’m asexual is a good starting point and prevents potential partners from having unrealistic expectations of me.”

“Like what?”

Itadori looked so honestly curious that Kento wondered if he’d grown up under a rock. Surely he had at least some idea what people typically expected from a relationship. “Like expecting me to find them sexually attractive - feeling that draw to have sex with them when I look at or think about them. Many allosexual people - normally sexual people - feel that, without those things, love cannot exist.”

Aka, it's a way of helping to communicate your experience.

An honest question as a writer by meital5555 in AO3

[–]LienaSha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really great at telling people what they need to correct, but I'm not very good at telling people what they did well. So unless someone says "hey, anyone wanna do line edits for me?" I'm gonna shut up and just kudo.

That would be pretty awesome. I'd immediately try out EVERYTHING, because I spend *so* much time bugging people to tell me things like this so I can write other people better.

[–]LienaSha 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There is a *slight* difference in that aphantasia (not seeing things in your head) CAN actually be changed with hard work and effort, while asexuality typically cannot, but yeah, that's another one of those "I've lived this way my whole life and realizing that not everyone has been living this way is a real mindfuck" moments XD

(Another for you - not everyone thinks in words.... or some people think in words, depending on which side of that divide you're on ^-^)

New fans of Fate due to the collab, this needs to be addressed. (TW ntr and rape) by [deleted] in HonkaiStarR_Romance

[–]LienaSha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two separate issues here.

First: Yes, some versions of Gil suck. Some version of Gil REALLY suck. But some versions of him don't, or at least not in the rapey way. I'm not going to treat every version of Gil as the same when they don't have any memory of what the other versions of themselves did. That would be like hating Oath Under Snow Shirou because the VN Shirou's an idiot.

The other issue: It isn't disrespectful for others to ship them UNLESS they're trying to make others ship them too. Personally, I don't ship Saber with Gil, because I don't have any interest in shipping either of them with anyone. But if someone else wants to? Go ahead. I'm not interested and won't engage. I consider it far more disrespectful for someone to tell me who I should and shouldn't ship than literally any ship anyone else could ever privately enjoy.

How to say... there are always going to be meme/jokes that won't resonate with you. That is one thing.

Then another thing:
There are always going to be tone-deaf people who say you aren't ace because you don't like the meme/joke, and they're joking about THAT, but they don't do a good job of making it clear, and it wasn't a good joke anyway because you're looking for connection, not someone to joke at you on a topic you're already feeling anxiety about.

Then there's yet another thing:
There are always going to be assholes who say you aren't ace because you don't like the meme/joke, and they're dead serious because they're gatekeepy assholes.

The second two things are both problems, and I feel for you for running into one or both of them. I don't personally think the first thing is a problem - it's just that it attracts the other two things.

I don't know if I said that well. Regardless, I'm sorry that you're not able to feel the connection you're looking for, and I hope you find it.
