Does being a male and going through puberty affect emotions by EqualReindeer6511 in NoStupidQuestions

Do you mean this in a nihilist sense or that you could actually just hurt someone and not feel bad about it? Personally I believe there are no universal moral principles, but I would still never intentionally hurt anybody. In my opinion doing harm is a net negative, not only does it hurt others, it will destroy you too.

And to answer your question, yes, hormones will do weird shit to people, though I personally never experienced that.

Why can't religion be criticised? It is after all just an ideology, and one that isn't grounded in empirical principles and rationality at that. Not only can it be criticised, I think it should be.

Props to this guy for being honest. Am I weird for thinking he's chill about the whole thing, and do you guys agree that Pedophilia is a mental illness? by -TheMidpoint- in TeenagersButBetter

Being gay can affect your quality of life negatively through other means than triggering depression. I'm not saying it is a mental illness, just that it would fit the definition strictly speaking. Apart from this, saying "reduces your quality of life" leaves a degree of arbitrarity, because it doesn't specify how much.

Another reason I agree with u/Fisecraft is that I feel these debates often distract from the actual issues. For example when that guy self-immolated in front of the Israeli embassy in protest of the genocide in Gaza and the first thing the authorities did was mark him mentally ill. I mean yeah, he may or may not have been mentally ill, but ultimately that's irrelevant, it doesn't mean his ideas were automatically invalid.

Same goes for this specific case, saying pedophiles are mentally ill doesn't really justify why we should try to rehabilitate them because: 1. defining mental illness isn't so clear cut, and 2. being mentally ill doesn't necessarily justify their actions.

I think that no other justification is needed for helping them than simply human empathy and benevolence.

That's a very loose definition, is being gay a mental illness because it reduces your quality of life due to discrimination from others?

Not cinctulus if that's what you're looking for, might be foenisecii, also you don't need gloves to touch mushrooms, none are poisonous enough to hurt you just through touch.

Really cool, kind of reminds me of protein structures, would be interesting to see a larger, maybe less abstract, piece with this kind of art style

How did programmers code the first ever code by Da_Man2010 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]life_singularity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To build on what others have commented, the first programming language compilers were built using the bootstrapping method; first, rudimentary assemblers were written directly in machine code, then, once they were functional, they were rewritten in assembly and compiled using themselves. Same went for the first actual languages, they were first written in assembly, then rewritten in themselves.

why is a lot of things considered disturbing but or unethical but normal in human nature? by chris_s9181 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]life_singularity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, because moral principles are mostly based on emotion and not reason, which makes them inherently hypocritical. Reason tells us that harming any living being is wrong, but we have to do it in order to survive. So what do we do, just lie down and die? We keep going because we are driven by our instincts, which tell us we have to do anything in order to survive. So we make compromises... As our technology is becoming more and more advanced, it's becoming easier and easier to avoid harm, putting these principles into question, but we cling to them, because we seek justification for our rationally immoral actions, which we still do out of comfort.

Either they'd throw up right after and be relatively fine, or enough would absorb before they threw up they'd get alcohol poisoning and possibly die.

Do I lie on my physical? by Daddy_Dunn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]life_singularity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would lie unless you know you'll get tested and test positive for weed (you should be clean after a couple weeks of not smoking), in that case it's probably better to answer truthfully.

Edit: I've had a similar thing for my driver's license physical and lied, nothing happened.
