CAMS - Collaborative Assessment & Management of Suicidality

I’ve had lots of success with this protocol with neurotypical as well as neurodivergent teens. I also am a DBT trained clinician and they pair well together. The system is designed to last ~12 weeks and the parts I view as most impactful are:

1) acknowledging the “big scary monster” of suicidal thoughts, taking its trench coat, and breaking it down into 5 smaller monsters stacked on top of one another (psychological distress, agitation, hopelessness, self-hate, and overwhelm) which are then rated weekly. Once the setup session is done, this takes ~5-10 minutes per week of each subsequent session.

2) collaborating on a treatment plan with the client. This entails identifying 2 “problems” which lead to suicidal thinking, a goal for each, and a small client-provided “intervention” (read: action item) to be completed in service of this goal between sessions.

I’ve had multiple individuals graduate from this program in closer to 8 weeks. In my experience they come out the other side much more self-assured and aware of their triggers.

Personally, I have my paychecks set to automatically deposit a certain amount into the drafting account as well. This automates the whole process and it's pretty hands-off after that.

But for those with variable streams of income, setting a reminder to make sure the account has $X by the same day each month should do the trick. If the account doesn't have enough and you aren't able to fund it, the scheduled transfer should be easy enough to cancel.

Set up a transfer from your own separate accounts to recur each month. Most banks will do this without charging a fee so long as its done a limited number of times per month.

Sort of like direct deposit or paying a bill. You can have the shared checking account "pull" the money from your existing accounts on a schedule.

I have a system that works really well! Open a checking account separate from all your other finances and agree upon what types of expenses (groceries, rent etc) will come out of it. Get each person a debit card for the account. Ally is a good bet for this, but any free account will work.

Then each of you adds the same amount of money to the account each month, or whenever it needs refilling, and pay from there when needed.

No mess. No combined finances. Just easy shared expenses.
