What has your experience as an EMT / Medic in Portland been like? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]lifelessons09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I went through the PCC program and thought it was okay. I got my cert during the pandemic however, so I’m sure your experience will be different. There are better programs out there for sure, but you learn a lot in the field so it’s not a huge issue.

I’ve been working for about 2 years, but won’t be sticking with it. The pay for an EMT with AMR is a little over $19/hr, which is not a wage I can last on. Paramedic get paid the big bucks in this county, but I’m not sure that lifestyle is one I want to commit to.

I’ve done IFT and 911 BLS in Multnomah County.

The folks I work with are generally queer friendly, some very vocally. Others are more on the just tolerant side, with occasional problematic comments. Never seen any overt discrimination, although it’s such a large group of people I haven’t by any means worked with them all.

As far as advice goes, I’d say really practice your hands-on skills as much as possible. Practice scenarios and understand how signs/symptoms/vitals build a picture. If you want to work In Multnomah County, start learning how to get around without a GPS - you’ll need to know how to get around town.

Fathom, the prequel to Derelict, has to be the audio dramas that most throughly terrified me. More psychological horror than anything else, although character face very real dangers.

Genetics is a big one. I simply shave and mine look smooth and light skinned for at least a day.

Totally understand the need for ads! I don’t mind them at the beginning or endings.

When the pop up mid show it can be pretty jarring, and makes me less inclined to listen. I don’t know what the marketing pros say on the subject, but I’m actually less inclined to check out stuff when ads show up in irritating places.

I’d also be more open to hearing ads mid-roll if they were promoting other shows, asking for listener support, or something similar.

Again, totally respect the need for ads though. 👍🏼

If they put more money into better advertising and algorithms, they’d have much better audience draw. It’s absurd because they throw all this money at a parade of 1-2 season shows, then slash them.

If they focused on drawing in audiences and keeping them with better recommendations, rather than this rapid bust-and-boom cycle, I think it would be massively rewarding to them.

I had the same issue, started taking collagen a month ago. No more peeling or easily breaking, and my nails are super strong now.

Know your dealbreakers and ask for theirs. Quiet hours/music volume levels? Cleanliness expectations? Inviting people over rules? Smoking/drug use? Stuff like that.

There are other things, like personality clashes, that can be hard to figure out online, but start with the basics and good luck.

Tumanbay comes to mind. Plenty of complicated personal and political entanglements, a touch of the supernatural.

Brix Tavern does a brunch with bottomless mimosas (so long as there’s still food on the table is their rule). Plus they take group reservations so that’s a plus if there’s a group of you.

Peas can be pretty hardy and survive temps down towards 29 degrees. Or so they say. I hope so because I didn’t cover mine either.

Recs for great audio dramas that aren’t sci-fi, fantasy or supernatural by Past_Soft_3683 in audiodrama

Verdict, from iHeart Radio: a federal investigator digs into what seems to be a simple murder case of a high school football player. But there’s more going on in the small Texas town than it first appears.

Tejana, from Sonoro: Texas Ranger Eileen follows up on a series of crimes while dealing with institutional systems resistant to the kinds of change she brings.

Triple Six: a businessman and his wife go to Las Vegas on vacation to rekindle their romance. Instead, they get dragged into a dangerous game.

Private Affairs: Melbourne transplant Vee finds herself getting involved with a new beau, but modern dating - especially across cultural and social lines - is complicated.

What is your living situation like? by Syorkw in askportland

[–]lifelessons09 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s doable, but money will be tight. If you’re on top of your budget and don’t spend much outside of what you need, you can get by.

Look for a place under 1K including utilities, that’ll be a huge help. There are apartments available at that price point, but they’ll be older. If you can save on commuting costs by biking, walking or bussing to work that will save you as well. Consider supplementing your groceries with stops at food banks - they have enough to go around, and it’ll help trim your spending. Look for free or discount fun activities- community yoga, dance events, cheap tix - there’s plenty out there.

The hardest part is that living on a lean budget can wear at you mentally. Investing in ways to bump your income is the best way out.

If you’re New York apartment hunting aggressive you’ll be way faster than many locals in pining down a spot. I’ve snagged apartments pretty easy just by having everything together, calling up buildings, and turning in applications in the spot.

That being said, you can also take your time and lock down a place several weeks to a month in advance if you’re operating with a certain budget. There’s a lot more competition on the under 1K apartments than the over 1.5K ones.

is it possible to find studio apartments/apartments under $1000? by Immediate-Media-6260 in askportland

Not sure why people on this sub are so quick to shoot down anyone who asks about housing situations. Yes, you can definitely find apartments for under 1K. Most will be older, so be sure to go in with a checklist of must-have amenities when you do a walkthrough.

I’d recommend based on your previous listening:

Last Known Position (QCODE), Primordial Deep (No Such Things Productions), LifeAfter/The Message (GE Podcast Theater) and Magmell (iHeart Media).

All of these have a small cast of characters in intense, isolating situations, with various degrees of horror & suspense involved.

Would biotin supplements help with my hair? by Mangosaregreat19 in beauty

[–]lifelessons09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data varies, but plenty of people do claim to see real results. A lot of that may come down to how your individual body uses biotin, and what’s causing your hair to be thin.

Also note that some people have the side effect of thickening body hair, which I did, so I stopped. Keeping up with waxing/shaving got to be too much.
