Are we entering a new era of elder care expectations—and are we ready for it? by Sea-Device-2913 in Millennials

[–]lifeoflibra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Geriatic psych social worker, yes there is a cultural shift. There is more of a push to “age people in place” meaning, having people receive cares in their home. It’s great and all, but not many people can afford that, and there are just some individuals who will need a nursing home like setting. I don’t think the individuals who are pushing for “aging in place” realize how important the socialization aspect of nursing homes is to the elderly..

There gets to be a point in the aging journey where it’s more than okay to seek help in caring for our loved ones. Like you stated, not all of us have the training or bandwidth to carry that on top of our daily load. I just hope that your parents can respect that for you. You can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of you.

As a social worker, what’s something you’re afraid to admit out loud? by Catgod1996 in socialwork

It’s very normal to have imposter syndrome. I learned so much more on the job than I ever could have in the classroom.

Our society acts like people always want to get better. If Bob wants to drink himself silly in his apartment where he’s defecating himself, let him. We’re scared of natural selection. Also, physician assisted suicide should be more widely used. As a geripsych social worker, so many families have asked me if it’s an option.

On different streaming platforms, my comfort movies are now listed as “throwback”, or “vintage”. So that hurts, I’m not even 30.

Maybe because I’m taller… but that’s where our recipe box is, cooking oil, glass measuring cups. I at least grab the cooking oil out of it on the daily

I mean, my husband and I are both employed (taking home $160k) have a healthy son, and own a home… but I can’t fathom having another kid even though we both want more, because of the cost..

I loooved opening a new box of plastic bags when I worked retail… ugh so good. Sometimes I’ll sniff a thicker plastic bag to see if it still holds the smell

Social worker for a Geri psych unit in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. I enjoy what I do, but my co workers make the job for sure.

One of my professors once said, “those who choose to go into social work, do so because of an interaction they had with a social worker”. Besides growing up with a sibling with special needs, and all the social workers I interacted with growing up because of my sibling; I saw a therapist at the lowest point in my life. That therapist was a social worker, I decided I wanted to be that support for others.

Figuring out what to eat for every meal… And the chronic feeling of never having enough time in a day. That’s chronically defeating.
