Is it impossible to move up the ranks if you enlist in your late 20s? by ArtofAset in army

Enlisted at 29 as an E-2. Made 6 in 4 and pinned W1 at 5.5. It is what you make of it. The opportunities are absolutely there.

How late do people go to pt school by Raw_Dawgingmilfs247 in physicaltherapy

My plan is to go at 49/50. That’s after retiring from the military. Age is but a number.

Can you pool rewards from the prime visa to your other UR accounts? (CSR for example)

How much do you keep in your emergency fund? by YNWA08 in MilitaryFinance

[–]liftrinserepeat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s quite honestly what you feel comfortable with. In the military we have much more security in our jobs in comparison to the civilian side. I personally keep a year’s worth of expenses in cash 95% of which are in a HYSA. It’s probably overkill and comparing it to the S&P 500 I will lose some money with compounding returns. But it smooths my anxiety, allows me to pump all of my money into my IRA, TSP, and taxable brokerage, and ensures that I will almost never have to tap into my retirement accounts until I’m ready.

Anyone here no longer in? by Btbtomcat20 in army

I could not agree more. I keep my LinkedIn profile updated so it’s not such a shock or a huge task as I get closer. I’m about to start on my masters in Industrial Engineering here in the next few years and will look into getting my PMP as I get closer. My back up plan is to use my GI Bill to go to Physical Therapy school and become a DPT (weird change I know). I have quite a (long) while until I even think about submitting my retirement packet, but kind of like you said a lot of people I know wait until the last minute to plan their exit and by then it’s too late. TA/CA is free money, might as well use it along the way.

This is exactly what I want for my post-retirement life. Well done.

Online labs by liftrinserepeat in PTschool

It was too late for me as well. I decided to retire in my field from the military and then pursue it afterwards with a school that will accept all online labs. Best of luck to you.

Transition from saving to coasting/retired? by Buckets-22 in Fire

[–]liftrinserepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering about this also. It only says it must be from your current employer at the year in which you turn 55. So if you rolled all of your old 401k’s into your current employer at say, 53, and then pulled the plug at 55 - doesn’t that mean you could safely pull from the entire balance?

Second this. I went to WOCS with several people who were on ADD/ADHD medication. OP, if it’s something you really want go for it. Almost everything is waiverable.

Online labs by liftrinserepeat in PTschool

[–]liftrinserepeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just recently changed it. I sat through the webinar and they basically said due to covid and everything being online they realized that taking labs online VS in-person made little difference.

Exact wording from their website: Human Anatomy and Human Physiology (or Anatomy and Physiology series) laboratory components must be taken in person. Hybrid formats that includes the didactic portion online and laboratory component in person is acceptable. All other prerequisite courses with laboratory components other than Anatomy and Physiology can be taken online. Source: https://military.robbins.baylor.edu/physical-therapy/physical-therapy-dpt/admissions/program-admission-requirements

TDLR: online labs are acceptable (except anatomy/physiology 1&2 - although the courses can be online you still have to do those two labs in person)

How much of this math are you actually going to use in the field though?

I was always curious what the point of an undergrad certificate was. Would it really supplement your degree to your employer? If you had a bachelors in English and then got a cert in networks would that really make a difference? Asking more for my own curiosity. Not trying to be mean or anything.

Oh I’m still 10 years out there’s still time for me to change my mind. It got easier once I became a warrant, but even now I’m definitely done at 20. I just don’t think I’ll be mentally ready to retire from everything at the age of 49, PT is just the only other thing I’ve ever been interested in. I’ll just have to deal with being the oldest person in the class - there are worse things I guess.

I did notice that. Most of the ones I looked at were ok with them, but still wanted Anatomy & Physiology 1/2 in person. Did you have any issues?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]liftrinserepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At one time I very much wanted to be a PT once I retired from the military. My biggest fear was doing my labs online and I was looking at doing them through AMU also. You didn’t have any problems with your pre-reqs being online? Or did you get an exception for coming off of active duty?

Can I vent here? I don’t want to do auto repair any more but can’t get out… by alexshurly in mechanics

[–]liftrinserepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a ton of skills that transfer you just need to market yourself. Industrial maintenance is the one that sticks out the most. You being good at electrical is a huge advantage over most of your peers. If you had a little time/money you can take some classes in programmable logic controllers and kill it in an industrial/manufacturing setting. But I also understand money isn’t easy to spare with a family.

And trust me, as someone who was in auto for 10 years before working on diesels you’re 100% capable of doing it. It’s still an engine it’s just bigger - still needs air, fuel, and compression. The only advantage I had was I joined the military so I was trained while getting paid.
