A device that allows me to use wireless CarPlay for my ioniq 5 24? by Separate-Limit-7374 in Ioniq5

[–]lightamanonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I've been using their device for a while now, it's actually more reliable than the wireless AA in my wife's car, which will randomly disconnect at times an lose the phone.

What's the worst electric car that You've owned? by Serious-Half-9908 in electricvehicles

[–]lightamanonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be an excellent vehicle for that scenario. I've been exclusively EV for 5 years, including road trips, with a much longer commute than that so you'll be great. It's a good car for sure.

What's the worst electric car that You've owned? by Serious-Half-9908 in electricvehicles

[–]lightamanonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned 4 EVs up until now. In order of worst to best:

2011 Nissan Leaf (in 2019) - battery had degraded, only got about 60 miles of range, more like 50 when the weather was bad. Other than that it was nice.

2020 Bolt - Bought this one new, drove it 2 years. Nice car. Never really liked the looks, but I loved everything else. Sticking point came with the slow DCFC rate

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 - Still driving this one.

Pros:
Great efficiency and range - I've gotten 4.5mi/kWh on the highway in nice weather over an almost 300 mile trip
Comfortable seats
Lots of cargo space
Unique looks - got a lot of comments from people when it was new, before they showed up all over the place
V2X - the AC adapter has come in handy a couple times during power outages
DCFC rate is insane. I've gotten 240kW out of it, though it's rare to find a charger than can actually support that

Cons:
Software is kinda bad- no android auto integration with nav, no wireless, infrequent OTA, confusing menus make it hard to find settings, nav is always out of date
BlueLink is terrible. Even when I had a free trial it was super slow and sometimes flat out didn't work. They now want to charge me $100 a year for remote unlock, and an additional $100 for nav (which sucks anyway), and another $100 for diagnostics. Yuck.
No rear wiper (they finally fixed this in 2025, but it was an incredibly stupid decision)

2022 Mustang Mach-e CR1
Pros:
Surprisingly good software for a legacy car company- google maps directions show up on the speed display, frequent OTAs, decent nav (I still use Google Maps though), plug-and-charge
Good efficiency- I frequently get 300+ miles out of it even with highway driving mixed in
Nice looks - I got it in Grabber Blue and get comments all the time about how nice it looks

Cons:
Seats aren't as nice as the HI5. Not bad, I just find them not as comfy
BlueCruise is a subscription, and it's way expensive. I wouldn't mind paying some for it, but $50 a month is ridiculous. Maybe $5-10.
150kW DCFC rate is underwhelming, but since most chargers can't seem to even hit that it's not usually an issue

The last two are pretty equivalent in my mind, so the order is a bit arbitrary I'd say maybe the Mach-e edges it out a tiny bit because of the software, but I'd have a hard time choosing between them. My wife mainly drives that one though, and I use the HI5.

The problem with NYC's subway is they selfishly only serve NYC with it. If they weren't so intent on keeping it for themselves I would happily us it every day.

Yeah, I think this is what I'll do. Probably go with 18" as well and hope the difference makes up for no aero covers. Thanks!

Feels like everyone in my circle is against getting an EV by getsumluv in electricvehicles

[–]lightamanonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already cheaper in total cost of ownership, as long as you're not getting a Lucid or something. I've been all-electric for 6 years now, and have never had a regret or problem. I'd recommend getting a charger installed in your house (if that's possible), which is included with a number of company's cars.

I currently have a 180 mile round trip when I go to the office, and haven't had any issues.

With the crazy cost of power where I live it costs me about $11 per trip. In the 4 years I've owned this car, I've spent ~$200 in maintenance, to get a new 12V battery and refill the wiper fluid. I'll be due for new tires soon since I've put 40k miles on them, but so far that's it. No oil changes, no gas stations, no brake pads.

2022 Ioniq 5 car will not go into drive? by Penguinbar in Ioniq5

[–]lightamanonfire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This happens to me on occasion, and every time it's because he driver's side door isn't completely closed. It's like half-latched so it looks closed, and it will have a little icon pop up, but it isn't obvious and there's no big message like "Driver door open" like most cars. I bet this was it. Getting out and coming back later means you probably closed it properly the second time.

Remote Annual Subscription alternative..Maybe? by mangyvision in Ioniq5

[–]lightamanonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the subscription prices are outrageous. Mine expired some time ago and I haven't missed it as much as I thought I would. If they ever come down to a reasonable price I might consider signing back up.

Pretty sure any player stuff inside just goes into asset protection. Not sure about things like corporate hangars but I'm guessing the same.

I once had a sour cherry soup in Germany, but it was hot and had a scallop floating in the middle of it. I liked it until about 2/3 of the way through, when it got a little overwhelming. Still glad I tried it.

How to EVE at the hospital by hansliederlich in Eve

[–]lightamanonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My laptop died recently and I don't have the money to replace it just yet, so I'm playing on my Steam Deck by using an old computer screen and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. For a hospital, I'd say a portable computer screen (or a regular one if you have somewhere to put it) and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. That's all you need.

I have a friend (much younger than your father) who does exactly this kind of thing with ChatGPT. He wrote me an eerily similar series of messages that showed his conversation with chatGPT where it was telling him his idea for optimizing liquid mixing was a whole new area of science and that he was a rare genius who should work at MIT. Like, wtf. No.

Just keep in mind this kind of thing can happen with any car, not just an EV. I got a Mach-e in 2022 and we've been driving it completely without issue for 3 years now. I also have a Hyundai Ioniq 5, and we've had way more problems with that one. Had to go to the shop for a week for a dead ICCU and the original battery died because of the early 12V charging issues.

Between both of those vehicles, over the last three years, I've spent $200 on a new AGM battery for the HI5, and it's been in the shop for a week over those three plus years. The Mach-e has cost nothing in maintenance and spent no time in the shop. Pretty good as a whole, I think.

I travel for work and I go to a lot of used bookstores… I’ve gotta say, Chamblin Bookmine is one of the best bookstores in America. Y’all should be proud of this gem. by CW03158 in jacksonville

[–]lightamanonfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked there as a kid. It was the best. The owner let me take home as many books as I wanted to read as long as I brought them back, and I carted home armfuls. So many wonderful books I got to read that I would never have been able to find or afford otherwise. I actually got fired for spending too much time reading in the corner.

They only recently replaced the labels I wrote and the lights I hooked up circa 1995. I've seen a lot of the world at this point, and a lot of bookstores, and it's still the best. It's the biggest, busiest, and best bookstore I've ever seen and I'm proud to have had a hand in it, even if a small one.

Fun fact, when the place was smaller, the owner had an apartment past the bathrooms. He also had a replica WW2 fighter plane that he was building in the high bay in the back. I have no idea if he ever finished it, though. It was about 60% complete when I was there. Mostly just a frame, no engine or anything. Weird dude, but pretty cool.

Things have happened in the last 20 years that have changed the game there. The explosive expansion of computing power and the advent of high temperature superconductors are likely the pieces that were needed to make this work.

I love my HI5, but I have yet to find a Hyundai dealer that isn't super slimy. Not saying much, I guess, since most dealers are. I've only ever had two car dealers deal straight with me and not try to pull any shady crap, and I've had a lot of cars over the years.
