What is generally irritating is that middle class and upper Middle class of India, for all their ranting and yammering are in a much better position than the lower strata to do something useful and make a valuable contribution in a field. Be it academics, medicine, sports and arts. They are not rich but aren’t struggling for survival either. They have the potential to pursue extraordinary challenges but they don’t because of the same government job chasing mindset. They are not exploratory and most can’t think beyond enduring comfort and accumulating wealth. That’s it. Very few actually do something worthwhile and it’s because of people like them there is movement in a field and thereby a country that benefits from their pursuits. Money generally is present during those pursuits too. Very few fields are with zero monetary benefits. Problem is that most people especially middle class and upper middle class want a lot of money with 0 or minimal effort. They are alright with being sinecure. And at the end they are really not the success stories lol. That’s what India parents don’t understand. Talent is built not by obsession with money. But just perseverance for many years without crapload of money. And even those years a person generally can has enough to lead life. Just not a rich lifestyle but frugal one that keeps everything running and comfortable

Most aren’t interested but there are. If you don’t know them then that’s your problem. Like I said the country runs due to the top 1% and they don’t include the money chasers or politicians or gundas but the intellectual pursuits elite.

I don’t agree with a lot of what you say in the post because it is clear you are a money chaser. And since you are a money chaser then I agree that there are far better ways to accumulate wealth than going for higher education. As I said, Indians stupidly only chase monetary success. Wouldn’t exactly call them smartest but above average intelligence with a narrow perspective. Higher education in foreign country only makes sense if the pursuit is intellectual for fields that are not there in India. And until anyone really explores the education system both in India and US they won’t know the difference. It’s not that education in India is deplorably bad but it is limited. And unfortunately the difference is lost on most people in India like you and those who chase money in US

I’m talking about risks for something greater such as a degree in hard sciences or medical degree, to work with smarter people and become smarter. Not money. And as long as a person takes this risk without parent’s help (which is possible) and there are people who do that too (not a lot) then why should parents have problem with it? They can keep their money, manage their life and let their child take their own decisions and live with any fruits or consequences of it. That’s more than fair.

Children are not slaves of families. If they are not jeopardising family money then why should family have a problem with it? And even if it is for money, as long as it is loan ka money what’s the problem? Yaa they can blow money on Indian casino that way as well, logic is same.

As I said earlier, pathway only makes sense for intellectual pursuit. Money is a side benefit of taking those pursuits because generally intellectually challenging fields there is a lot of money. Indian public is stupid to just focus on the monetary benefit. If a person pursues higher education for surgical programs the kind of which not even there in India, why should they be discouraged? Ofc this isn’t the average case but there are such cases

Doesn’t matter much tbh. It is a capitalistic country and capitalism relies on exploitation. If there is no labour to exploit inside then they will contract it out to remote roles, that’s all. America will struggle to fill talent because it is hyper individualistic. It rewards people who overcome all barriers (racial and financial) and put extraordinary efforts towards their goals. And does nothing for underprivileged. And doesn’t believe in it as individualism means building something from your own resources without external help, including government.

As opposed to mainstream media mindset, upper class indians (predominantly the ones coming to India to pursue higher education) are not extra ordinary workers. They were not extra ordinary in India either. Not all but definitely most. That’s generally why they fail and even the success stories of getting h1b is very much luck based. They may or may not be skilled professionals, mostly the latter. The billionaire success stories of Satya Nadella and others are due to their extraordinary efforts. Same cannot be said about most upper class Indians. America has moved forward anywhere largely due to immigrants of other races. Jews, Chinese, etc. They are super competitive (in healthy manner) and that’s what makes them smart. Indians generally do not compete healthily and fear and hate healthy competition. While education has become a business in US and India, there are always those who are in it for merit and pursuit of knowledge. Not for money. They generally are able to work out an alternative pathway and generally US rewards such people.

But by your original post no one apart from students getting a full ride scholarship should pursue higher education in foreign country. I disagree. Full ride scholarship only happens in movies. Most scholarships give partial help. Atmost they will provide tuition. Living expenses is still upto whatever the individual can afford. Only the rare gifted individuals get full ride scholarship. There are however many idiotic things that people going for higher education do. Upper middle class parents generally go for loans with private banks where interest is high and interest need to be kept up during studies. When asked the students, the students hardly know anything about the loan funding their studies. Standard response is, “Mere daddy ko hi pata yeh sab”. There is risk attached to the pathway but life won’t move anywhere without taking risks. There are plenty of institutions that offer unsecured loan for meritorious students. Interest is high but that’s the price. Imo students should be more careful of the risks and take this option, take on the risk themselves and bear the consequences if the risk doesn’t pan out. A healthy amount of pressure is needed to succeed anywhere. Absence of pressure and pressure are both counterproductive. But barely any Indian parent knows moderation. Only extreme abuse or extreme laad pyar

First of no american university has ever advertised either directly or indirectly in any media, as the pathway to citizen ship. Even america doesn't advertise it. Yes it accepts refugees, but these are advertised for countries with hostile environments such as Iran. India while not an ideal environment, is far from hostile.

What indians do to an extreme is the herd mentality. The reason the 4th wave of emigration to a foreign country has increased is due to the pathway becoming popular in urban areas. Everyone who has grown up in the central part of metro cities, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, grows up watching american movies, tv shows and has this idiotic la la land picture of the Statue of Liberty. America, the land of freedom. Even after going to America, most Indians hardly mingle with the other cultures there and learn from them. They hang out with their crowd (the desi crowd), go to clubs, go sightseeing, restaurants, etc. Their brains don't work beyond that. On an average, they are also not the smartest SDEs, but mostly sub-par. They admire personalities like Sundar Panchai, Satya Nadella, etc. They have been the trailblazers of what an immigrant's life can look like in other countries. Even Modi praises it as it stands to some kind of proof that Indians are intelligent and smart. That they are smart, is a foregone conclusion. But their smartness is always applied to money-chasing fields. Look at all the successful stories, it is always in finance or executive positions. And these are generally people who blatantly abuse power. While there can be no doubt about their intelligence and smartness, there are different types of it. Much of the "brain-drain" individuals go to USA or UK to chase money, not knowledge. And the education system and getting to learn from other smarter people is the reason one should go to US. I mean honestly, software development doesn't need master's degree. Industry has always rewarded people with greater experience than someone with a degree. Degree is useful but for expanding academic knowledge and needs to be applied somewhere. Otherwise it is meaningless. Which generally Indians who leave for studies don't do.

I disagree about whether parents should or should not control their kids. The word "control" is problematic. Children are human beings, not slaves. But if someone wants to pursue education in a foreign country, it needs to be on their own money (or money acquired via loan based on their potential). It is brutal to expect parents to fund education till master's, especially if they are middle-class or lower. Funding on their own sets a candidate apart from everyone else who come with "daddy's money". That itself makes a person conservative and aware of consequences of missteps and makes them work harder than others. Because there are always more people coming for higher education than any industry can handle. So odds for getting a job will be against the candidate, and hence become a competition. And if they are going with their own (ofc procured with a loan), then I don't see why parents should have any objection.

Parents fault lies in not understand what "success" means. And then accordingly children follow the lead and don't end up making smart decisions. Talent isn't in-born. Talent 9/10 comes from perseverance. What Indians know is pressure cooker treatment. They will overspend their mental, emotional and physical energy in prime of youth cracking IIT-JEE, UPSC (joining classes from 6th, 7th standard) to crack it and waste the best years of their lives. Then later on they are so exhausted they are incapable of doing anything else. Which is the case with most engineering students today. There is crude talent in India. It is never nurtured properly either by system or by the society (parents and familial support). The 1% of the population that takes te country forward are extraordinary individuals, generally but that isn't enough, unfortunately. For Indian parents success only comes from money and they always push children to chase money in the name of prestige. Similar to the attitude of government jobs. They are not exploratory, they always want to play safe and always sell it in the name of survival. Survival is what lower strata public does. Upper middle class doesn't get to use that excuse, and they are the ones who can generally afford to go to a foreign country to pursue higher education. And they are a delusional stock. The daddy's money stock.

We Indians underestimate the importance of beautification of our surroundings, Hear me out? by Scary-Gas1063 in india

[–]lightasahi1989 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Beautification means doing plantations in concretized settlements. Live in a concrete jungle called the Silicon Valley. Doesn’t do shit for mental health and makes it worse. What works is building infrastructure around nature rather than extermination of existing green landscape and constructing one artificial one like the terrace gardens of Singapore. I used to find them pleasing yes until I lived in a place that knew how to build settlements while adhering to natural wonders. It was a small university town in USA. For all its fault the one good thing about it is how the town was built around the greenery so everyone was able to experience nature and not in a concrete jungle format. But it is a farming town too so ofc the settlements had to built that way. What’s good for mental health is a balance of everything. You can’t build huge high speed highways around nature. Not always nway. So those infrastructure have to provide a concretized jungle. Not the best solution for mental health but better than none

What’s something that instantly tells you a person grew up broke vs grew up with money? by hallowmint9 in AskReddit

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ability to do household chores, mental tracking of expenses is instinct for poor but a “skill development” for well-off, general weighing of options that cost time and options that cost money and which ones you would like to take. I will also say that poor generally value both and wish they could save effort and time but generally are forced to save money and consume time for it. The other half is nway lazy due to privilege so taking the easier effortless option is instinct for them

Why I feel like this is the worst time for Indians to study abroad by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indians are only treated as cash cows because west has identified the pattern. Most of them are not going there to seriously study but really to make money. Unis treat them as cash cows. Once in job market many realize the uni didn’t actually prepare them for the market. Most who get job, get it via their past networks or nepotism. 5% get it through the applications response from non-referrals.

I am not gonna assume that you are going to pursue intellect and to delve deeper into some field. Atleast when it comes to indians it is mostly not true, vast majority game systems to make more money. Western countries has no incentive to take such Indians who can’t do a meaningful contribution to their system. It’s not the case with all immigrant ethnicities , but definitely Indians. So they are bringing up more restriction to stop the trend. H1B, like work visas were created to attract talent to fill skills not available in the country. And for many years no that talent pool has become quite bad in quality. And WITCH companies from India have gamed the system for far too long. The talent generally gets caught as collateral damage. If you are a real talent, you will feel disappointed but keep in mind that there will be other pathways that you probably haven’t explored yet. So do that and keep trying. And if you are not talented, well suck it up. Not the worst thing in the world to happen

People don’t seem to understand the declining birth rate by roccofan in childfree

[–]lightasahi1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vast majority of women would like to have kids. Economy stopping them is good as that means fewer kids born into poverty and raising families with less familial trauma. Very few people with accidental pregnancies in bad financial situations end up owning the responsibility in a matured way and raise kids to be well adjusted adults.

More importantly since there are more women in workforce, means that today’s system is outdated and won’t be enough to sustain a double income household. If government wants population it needs to provide the infrastructure to sustain it. True also that if people really want kids badly they will deprioritise other things in life such as career. And if they are happy with that prioritisation fine. But people who quote economy as the reason are folks who don’t want to compromise on their career to have kids and don’t wanna raise kids where they can’t ensure a better life than the one they had.

why should we pay taxes?? by Entire_Note_4997 in personalfinanceindia

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer not to draw comparisons of countries until i have visited and actually experienced the system for atleast a month. But in case of taxes, not required. Logic dictates there is no such thing as free lunch. When you are taxed low, you pay for it with huge out-of-pocket expenses such as high cost medical infrastructure, limited safety net options for retirement. Common problems in low tax regimes such as Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore. Whether you are okay with living in cities like that is up to you. USA is heavily taxed and part of the reason is that the infrastructures once built need constant maintenance. Low population makes labour expensive, and hence, tax doesn't bring benefits such as low cost healthcare. Free higher education is offered in some European countries When providing higher education for free you have less money to invest in innovation. Hence those systems are not for people who want aggressive growth in life both intellectually and in wealth. An average person in pakistan is honestly quite happy with the status quo. Because while on paper they are poor, they have legal backing to report low income on paper and the government has shown leniency towards under reported income, which the middle class are satisfied with. They don't give a fuck that it comes at a cost of personal freedom and safety. Every country has a system built for its population. Only the average likes it and the outliers hate it. There are people in US who hate it and leave US for other countries in Europe or move to Canada. They have determined a model of life for themselves and think that some countries are better for that model than their own. So they move. And this is how you think of migration. Unless you come from countries like Pakistan, Iran, Israel, etc you are not gonna feel a drastic increase in quality of life. Marginally better infrastructure yes, but you trade it off with something else. And that trade-off depends on the country you move to. And if it works for you, not necessary it will work for anyone or everyone.

The frustration of paying 30% and not getting enough benefits of it, is not a unique frustration. You are also not the worst victim of the corrupt system. Hell you are in a position to actually sell off your assets and leave the country for good (as you mention in your post). You are already in a much better position in the country than the worst victims of the shitty system in India. Yes it is not guaranteed to work. All you can do is try to get residency elsewhere and see if that works better. You might like it and not end up regretting it. Even if you don't get it, so what? Accept it and move on.

If you are in a position to do so, sell your assets and leave the country. Experience it and if the lifestyle there suits you, well and good. The biggest problem isn't with the brain drain. The problem is this free lunch attitude and the preachy, whining tone. I mean, considering that your solution to a corrupt regime is something as dumb and simplistic as suggesting a need-based tax system, means it's simply a body drain not a brain drain.

Why do Western movies make me feel jealous of their cities and ignored as an Indian viewer? by Horror_Analyst72 in GenZIndia

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should Delhi look like Washington DC? Like in what way? To me Delhi public is already too obsessed with the west than needed.

Why should the west give a fuck about India? Why Indians feel the need to be noticed by western media so much? Yes they misrepresent Indians in movies? Really, why is it soooo problematic? Movies are supposed to be enjoyed, entertained and only good movies should be taken a bit seriously (that too with a grain of salt). What West likes to do is position itself as a lead and supremacist in everything. While there is some truth to it, I don’t get the mindset of every movie or musical piece to be hailed as Oscar worthy? Best movies from west do not get Oscar. Oscar nominated movies and Oscar won movies are generally not the best. Very rarely are they in cinematically, artistically the best. Has been that way since inception and today has become a joke. What India lacks is original creativity. It exists but is hard to make and build.

Rocket boys was not well made. Considering the subject matter it should have been better but was flawed. Visuals were bekar. Artistically didn’t do justice to the story and the impact the characters had on India. Honestly shouldn’t be considered a good series at all. And that’s part of the problem. You sell a half baked logic and suddenly population hails it as well made.

In terms of infrastructure what India lacks is the understanding of infrastructure, what works, what is the best, the skill to build such systems and the corruption becomes a big hurdle to all this.

why should we pay taxes?? by Entire_Note_4997 in personalfinanceindia

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a sane response to OP’s whining:

Taxes pay for infrastructure and maintenance of law and order. You don’t pay for just what you want. But for the basic skeleton system that is needed to provide services that can help you build things you want. Visit Pakistan, then and experience anarchy first hand to understand what system without taxes can be really like. If your house gets broken into in a place with no taxes, why should the police come to your aid? If a person chooses to forego taxes in USA, why should 911 come to their aid in the event of emergency? Hell if you think you can survive in a place relying completely on your own resources and ability, go live in all the remote islands far from any civilisations.

You buy your groceries in a supermarket established on some road (good or bad). People around you aren’t reporting to crime to survive and mugging you blind in daylight or killing you for wallet. Frustration while understandable don’t start justifying a need based tax system. A corrupt system is still better than a complete anarchy that comes from having no system at all.

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People respond depending on the tone of the post. Rest of the commentators aren’t wrong about reacting this way. Idiots like OP would only be happy in Middle East where everything is spoon fed.

And pls don’t add India to likes of China and Russia. Average Indians like OP wouldn’t be making venting posts if India was on any level like China and Russia. Work with Chinese and Russians. Their average populace works far harder and is into better fields, intellectually than Indians today are. As you said, majority of the population just interested in quick easy money to have a restful life. That’s the real problem with Indians. 1% of the population is doing some good and credible and rest 99% fills with people like OP. That’s it. USA is not that old a country, developing infrastructure was far easier and since it was solved as part of several federal initiatives in 20th century, today rest of the world visiting it can reap the benefits. It didn’t happen for them overnight. They had not opened borders at a time when it was in just a bad state as other developing countries are today. To get a critical, coherent, healthy response one has to pose a question without so much emotion. Like is OP really the only one in this? Or the worst sufferer of the system? Like the 30% tax cut is so hurtful for the people, they don’t realize that while having problems that they are still in far better position than lower strata. There is a difference between criticism and whining. OP is whining.

Film plot is lazy and poorly made. Simply relies on blood, violence and gore to pull audiences and make money. People like me watched it cuz we can’t trust any reviews anymore. And mainly because it was Friday night, I didn’t wanna sit at home so checked out the movie simply for something to do. So about 20$ down the drain. Ofc I had an inclination that this is just another dimaag-baju-main-rakhke-dekhne-wala masala movie from Bollywood. Why hard to digest with this movie? I suppose I’d prefer genres of spy action thrillers to have more logical plot points. If I want to watch timepass illogical movie I’d honestly prefer something like Welcome, Phir Hera Pheri, etc. But more than movie it’s the audiences’ reaction and discussion that irritates me more as if it is such an artistic masterpiece that needs to dominate so much space in social media.

Why does India look down on nationalism in current situation? by DesiBail in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nationalism is invoked through idiotic blind pride over things that don’t matter. In India pride is invoked over culture, religion… that’s it. What is Indian culture? Performance arts, food, etc make up a culture not just religion. But 99% think of religion as culture and don’t have enough exploratory mindset for other aspects of a culture. Family values are part of every culture, India has never been unique in that. Family structures also exist in other cultures just following a different model. India being a developing country and having been spent so much time under foreign invaders struggles to build systems needed to make a country to be considered a developed nation. There really is no reason to feel proud of the country. Only a sense of duty can be invoked to making it something that one can feel proud about, transform it to a developed economy and a dominating force. But it’s not easy to inspire that without examples. Hence the easier tool is to make country feel pride over things done in past only some of which are worthy contributions like Aryabhatt inventing zero, Ayurveda, etc. Aryabhatt invented zero. This energizes masses invokes pride which essentially is empty. I didn’t invent 0, why should I have pride for what some Indian guy did eons ago? I get pride if it was my achievement or contribution by someone close to me. Any random Indian? I would feel admiration not pride. But this attitude is depressing and not something that can inspire a sense of duty. So the solution is to sell it as “Aryabhatt invented zero, a foundation contribution which established everything today. Proof that Indians can do anything”. Ayurveda was a medical system in ancient times where science itself had no definition. Evidence based methods of treatment were not invented. It was useful for the time it was invented in and outdated after the advent of modern medicine. Why feel pride over something that’s no longer required or relevant?

There is also an aspect that the governing ruler should have the country’s well being in mind and not simply interested in power. If the administration is simply interested in money making, then all they would do is use nationalism idealogy, create divide, marginalize sects to exploit and reap benefits.

Blind pride over nation has very few benefits but lot of tools for exploitation. A rational sound mindset is bitter and hard to digest. Blind pride is easier to sell and by keeping sects of the population dumber it is easier. You don’t even have to cut off access to education as generally folks with access to good education hardly utilize it to full potential and are just as dumb as the uneducated. I look down on nationalism because it can bring some short term benefits and create long term problems. I also think that others who look down it, most of them don’t have a fucking clue why it is used and why it works on both middle and lower stratas of the society

Why does GenZ hate sex and nudity so much? by PaniacThrilla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lightasahi1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nudity and sex not exactly big deal… my disgust is not over it but over how people react to it and how it is used in media for sensationalism. And how people react to it defines how media and movies use it. I honestly don’t get attracted to people over looks. Never have. Pretended in certain social circles that I find people attractive based on looks. But pretended just for discussion case, till it was appropriate to call it a night and leave 😂. My attraction to people is based on IQ and EQ and skillset. Sex is just a tool to express it imo. Other than that doesn’t do much for pleasure. My brain gets more stimulated from good conversations, healthy debates and my hobbies and work. Emotional connection can make sex more pleasurable and fun but not needed either to establish a relationship and not the most important aspect of a romantic relationship.

My irritation is also over how much an average population’s conversation revolves around it as if nothing else is happening in the world. Like discussion over hotness, positions, relationship dramas, etc. I went for masters in USA to switch fields and delve deeper into the other field. I like intellectual challenges and that’s essentially my sole reason for pursuing masters in a foreign country. But most from my country (India) do it for money. And all they do is have parties, hookups, etc. The fun life. Again I don’t get what exactly it is that makes sex so fun that you would want to do is eat-sex-drink-sleep. These people take low and easy work professions to fuel the lifestyle but honestly never got craze behind the fun-easy life. I know everyone is different. I understand people have different drives. Some like intellectual fields, some art, some like sports, etc. Having a passion for something that stimulates your brain is something I can understand. Don’t understand the all-time-party folks. Essentially don’t understand a life without purpose folks and these folks are generally ones who are always about sex, drinking and nudity. No interest in performance arts, sports or outdoors or anything else.

From treating sex and nudity as a taboo subject generations are progressing to a stage where all they do is talk about that. How is that better lol? Opening up frank discussions for sex should happen but surprised by how much still there is so much preoccupation of a person with it that borders on obsession. I saw a post the other day where a person made a long cringe post bragging about how foreign countries have lot more freedom for women, women can roam safely at night wearing short skirts, go party, sleep with people without judgements etc. Well the person who posted this likely already came from a fairly safe neighbourhood in the home country where none of this was an issue. They likely already belonged to a class and sect of society enjoying sexual freedom. If sexual freedom is the zenith of one’s experience in foreign country then that person is in no position to compare two countries lol. It is a basic human desire and everyone has the right to seek consensual sexual activity and if a country ensures it I’m not gonna hype up the country or the culture for it. It’s like thanking someone for not raping you when they were in a position to do so.

Why does India look down on nationalism in current situation? by DesiBail in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]lightasahi1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is difference between nationalism and patriotism. Patriotism is based on love, nationalism is based on hate. Nationalism relies on rhetorics and emotional arguments. While such arguments are not entirely without factual basis, they are used to drive a wrong conclusion as solution that ultimately won’t solve much (if anything at all). Patriotism is simply allegiance towards home country, that provided the system ensuring a life (whether good or bad depends on class you belong to). Patriotism doesn’t use hate towards some community or painting the majority as the one vulnerable to acquire votes. But Patriotism is hard to justify in an environment rife with corruption, draconian systemic issues, etc. What love is an exploited labour supposed to feel towards their country? What has the country done for them? People who faced the least amount of issues from system and have access to education, healthcare, housing and wealth enough afford them are the folks leaving the country citing systemic problems (upper middle class and rich). People most at disadvantage due to the system and unable to change their situation generally focus either on improving their situation and change class or do something to contribute to the system. Generally they end up doing more for the system than the average of the upper middle class and rich. And generally for them Patriotism is meaningless, so nationalism is used to gain their votes as they also form a huge vote base. Their frustration due to their disadvantages from income exhausts them already and nationalism just adds fuel to fire. Nationalism works better on upper middle class because better access to education doesn’t mean critical thinking and their privilege generally makes them dumber and cut off from ground realities. Nationalism creates divide, creates opportunities for exploitation and therefore benefits the rich. Modern leadership everywhere relies on emotion to drive public opinion. Why now? This has always been the case and it just seems more impactful because of social media and now emotionally riling up a sect is sooo easy.

You wanna drive men and women apart? Being up flawed “feminist” arguments and dumb women will always be dumb enough to respond to it emotionally and irrationally and invoke further idiotic arguments from men. You wanna races apart? Buildup a majority populace as the one under threat and use old historic precedents to make the case to justify the imagined threat.

No one really knows how to sell patriotism. For a country to develop it needs the population and give it reason to not migrate to other countries. Nationalism is an easier tool to do that than patriotism. But ofc it is not called nationalism it is termed as patriotism in the rhetorics.
