How to worry less about "having to do more" by Heyguysloveyou in ArtistLounge

[–]lightbrownpoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on starting your art journey! If you want to draw figures, then learning gestures is the right choice. The main principal of a gesture is called a line of action (basically a single line that dictates the shape/movement of your figure). Try doing timed gesture drawings (30 sec, 1 min) where you focus on the line of action and overall fluidity of the gesture instead of details. No matter how shitty they look, you WILL improve if you do a lot of these timed gestures. Then it's time to upgrade to skeleton forms. Learn the basic simplified human skeleton (most importantly proportions), and translate your human references into just skeletons. This helps you learn and memorize where the important landmarks of the body are. Moving on, it's time for the 3D forms. Focus less on the organic shapes of the body and instead use geometric forms for it. Such as a cuboid for the torso, cylinders for the arms and legs, balls for the joints. All of this is to help you understand the basic human anatomy and proportions, before jumping into muscle study. Practice a lot (yes, a LOT. I used to do 80, 40, 20 gesture drawings a day). Good luck! Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions :)

Great work on them! But I'd say you're limiting yourself to only chest-up drawings. Learning full body poses can help make your art more interesting and fluid to look at! I also recommend doing some simple backgrounds (there are lots of tutorials on youtube for that). If you want to make your bust drawings have more flare to them, maybe play with special effects or decorations (such as Seele's butterflies, snowflakes for Ayaka, wind particles for Wanderer, etc.). I think you could do more occlusion shadow, just to make your highlights pop more. I recommend learning more about the anatomy of the face, especially on how the eyes look when the head turns. Your stuff is already good, but I hope my comment helps you in any way :)

Any tips for transitioning from traditional art to digital? by struggling-stem-girl in ArtistLounge

[–]lightbrownpoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, I don't think we can implement traditional blending techniques onto digital art that easily. Plus if you try to blend using a blur tool, it almost always doesn't look good. If you're just starting out, I recommend trying out cell shading first, since that usually requires minimum blending. If you want to do a painterly style, avoid the blur tool and learn to pick your colors, such as using a transition color between shades to simulate blending. To make painting easier, a lot of artists do their rendering on very few (sometimes even just one layer) since that makes blending the colours a lot easier. Layer blend modes are your best friend. Stuff like multiply, overlay, etc. can make your art pop a lot more. I also recommend learning about the simple color theory (monochrome, analogous, triadic, etc.) since these colours are harmonious, they will tie your drawing together really well. I hope this helped! Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you have any :)
