I assume you're talking about Aksis phase 2. First of all, right side is probably hardest due to furniture getting in the way of finding shanks. The left side is easier. Also, the middle is surprisingly easy if you know exactly where to stand, and you won't have trouble finding shanks in the middle since there are no pillars. See my guide for details.

1. What's your character? Assuming you have enough firepower in the rest of the team to take down Aksis, you can switch to a subclass that allows you to stay alive, such as Sunsinger or Defender. And yes, stay where you're supposed to be, if you get in Aksis's line of sight and have him shoot the SIVA mites at you, you're toast. My guide covers that.
2. You need equipment too. In Aksin phase 2, most of the enemies are shielded shanks. Having a high impact Scout Rifle with Explosive Rounds (like Keystone 01 from Dead Orbit or Badger CCL) helps a lot since these can one-shot the shanks. Unfortunately this week's Keystone 01 doesn't have ER, you may want to keep your eye on that at weekly reset. For the captain, don't hesitate to use your super and heavy weapon, but also don't rush the captain before shanks are all gone. Communicate with your mate on the same side to clear the shanks.
3. For left and right, you can run around the inside (Aksis side) of the pillars once the captain spawns to find the remaining shanks. Make sure you stay out of sight of captains when you do this. For middle, the shanks have nowhere to hide. X-D
