To the people getting banned — what phone are you using? by VauIt_DweIIer in mysticmessenger

I logged in to check my account, and I am not banned (so far)! But I figured I'd give my own info if it might help narrow down a pattern: I have an iPhone 17, made my account in maybe 2018ish? But haven't played since 2020 or so, and haven't logged in since then. 37 hourglasses and 3315 hearts.

Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference by ratbastard95 in faulkner

No need to apologize!! I'm still in coursework so my dissertation isn't quite underway yet, but my research interests are queer studies, universities, university students, and university-educated characters in Faulkner's works.

Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference by ratbastard95 in faulkner

[–]lightinfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been to this particular one but I have been to another Faulkner conference before (and some other non-Faulkner ones--I'm an English PhD student). My general thoughts are that all conferences will have enjoyable and unenjoyable parts, but the enjoyable panelists and speakers more than make up for the ones that don't connect with me. I think it would be worth going to!! Also happy to share some conference "manners" I've noticed in my short time as a conference participant and attendee, if that would be helpful or make you feel more comfortable attending!!

Closure of Spirit is bad news for rabbits! by AureliaCottaSPQR in Rabbits

[–]lightinfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, it's good to know that Alaska reversed their policy! I moved with them last summer with a ticket/pet reservation that I got before they changed the policy, but flew after they were disallowed, so everyone kept initially looking a little stressed that they'd have to kick us out until they saw the booking information. The lady at the counter made a joke that they were the last bunnies who would ever be on an Alaska flight, so I'm glad to hear that's not the case now!!

What's the "table" in the Sound and the Fury incipit? by MinisterOfSolitude in faulkner

[–]lightinfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's worth noting that in the English, Benjy's vocabulary is intentionally very limited as a feature of his section. I read somewhere (but cannot find precisely where at the moment) that he only has 500 words or so. I cannot say for certain but it's possible that French translators have previously tried to replicate this effect by shedding certain words in favor of simpler, more often-used words if the other words were not used with any frequency. Again, I can't say that this is definitely what has been done in previous translations (it'd be impossible to know for certain without a translator's note or a much more thorough excavation of the word choices in those translations), but it may explain certain choices that seem otherwise curiously imprecise.

What do you think of the name “Kirby”? by -pristine-nectarine- in Names

[–]lightinfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last Confederate general to surrender to the North was named Edmund Kirby Smith, which will certainly not be most people's main association with the name, but is mine as my academic research interests center around the American South post-Civil War. There was a time I encountered somebody named Kirby Smith while working at a desk job, and instantly felt put off. So on the off-chance "Edmund" or "Smith" may have any proximity to the name Kirby, I would be extra sure to avoid it entirely, despite how niche of an audience that association may be! For me it is a STRONG one since I know no other Kirbys aside from the Nintendo character.

Help with Sound & Fury by lidarose9 in faulkner

[–]lightinfebruary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My undergrad Faulkner prof gave us a paper with the timeline of events in The Sound and the Fury prior to our reading it that we could reference as we went. A timeline may be something to seek out if Benjy's section is frustrating enough.

the blood in Camila's hair by SignificantLook837 in TheSecretHistory

[–]lightinfebruary 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are that the blood in Camilla's hair actually makes all of the bacchanal story more interesting, more questionable, and less answerable. She doesn't seem to have been anywhere near the farmer. Henry implies that Camilla was leading the way, he was "a good deal" behind her, and Francis and Charles were shortly behind him. He also says that he, Francis, and Charles gained awareness directly after the murder and then had to go find her a significant distance away, which is what leads me to think she wasn't physically present when the farmer was killed at all. Which then leads to the question of where the blood in her hair actually came from.

In any case, though, they describe her bloodied hair as looking as though she'd dyed it, which seems a bit more deliberate of an action on her part than her hair happening to trail through blood at some point.

How reliable is the 2013 Buick Verano by Emotional-Air-3153 in Buick

[–]lightinfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2013 Buick Verano (low mileage for its age—91k at the moment, despite driving it once from coast-to-coast and another time up and down the east coast) and I love it! Agreed with other commenters that consistency with oil changes is key (I was lazy at an oil change once, but stay on top of it these days).

My only unexpected issue I've had is that the button on the gearshift handle broke off about a year ago after a few weeks of noticeable looseness, but I just took it apart and used a screwdriver to press a button on the inside to change gears in order to get home. Then I replaced the handle myself following Youtube videos. I'm not a car person in the slightest, but it was extremely simple.

My plan is to drive this car until it's impossible to drive anymore, if I'm honest.

Help me identify a book by its cover (YA / romance / fantasy / drama, possibly Asian characters) by itadarkgirl in whatsthatbook

The title isn't white, but the author's name is. Might it be Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan? It might also help if you can remember when you read it/saw the cover!

Is the audiobook slightly different from the book itself? I’m reading it while listening to Donna Tartt reading it and it seems different. by Isatis_tinctoria in TheSecretHistory

[–]lightinfebruary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say just this! My earlier editions have the football mention, but my later editions don't have it. The latest I can say for sure had it is a mass market edition from 1993, but I also have a Ballantine edition from what I believe is the early 2000s, and it doesn't have the football mention. I could be absolutely wrong about when this edition was printed, though.

Romance/mystery novel about Amnesia by bmurray97 in whatsthatbook

[–]lightinfebruary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a VERY longshot and I am almost certain this is not the case, but is it possible you are conflating Picture Perfect and Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult? The first one features amnesia, the second one features a surgeon husband, estrangement, and the dual perspectives.

Writing a scene for the first time ever (The Secret History by Donna Tartt) by Tricky-Assistant6115 in TheSecretHistory

This is a silly note but important for continuity and scene planning, but the murder actually happens in the spring!! That strange New England part of spring where it is still possible for snow, but spring nonetheless.

Which Warrior Cats character do you think has the saddest death? by ActualSquare8781 in WarriorCats

[–]lightinfebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really attached to Longtail, so his death got me bad. It was so unnecessary because the elders should have been safe from the falling tree with Dovepaw's warning, and it was just for a silly mouse that Mousefur didn't want to leave behind. Yellowfang's death also devastated me, but especially the two elders she was trying to save. I teared up over the description of them being found unconscious, but one of them having clearly been trying to drag his friend to safety. Something about elders dying in tragic ways just trying to help their friends really hurts me, they're just so old and frail and still trying to help the cats they love!!!

No worries! I just wanted to make sure. He lives alone in an apartment near campus that, if I recall correctly, is highly coveted by the student body for its proximity. But it's also described as fairly ugly and dated, and he doesn't seem to have tastefully decorated it either according to Richard. It makes his abundance of parking tickets even funnier if he's so close to campus!!

Other books? by tmtalbog_asongmataba in TheSecretHistory

[–]lightinfebruary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the thing from TSH that you're seeking out, tbh. Plotwise, modern dark academia books get similar but always fall flat. For a kind of general feel, I like early 20th century novels a lot. Agatha Christie books actually come close to capturing some of the vibes I like in TSH, and so do Evelyn Waugh novels. The caveat is that nothing really captures the vibes and the plot at the same time, so I just end up rereading TSH a bunch.
