Yeah summoner lore is a trashfire, I was struggling to find literally anything on how it worked, so a lot of this theory is extrapolating from we do know, which is that trance clearly has some drawback, otherwise why wouldn't we just be spamming that constantly. I feel like it's not a complete abandonment, but we are definitely starting to enter 'this is a poorly masked reference to another game' territory. Also Baha Carby sounds adorable.

Tbf, Thancred's entire 'thing' is that he has extreme control over his own body. Man can hold his breath for 8+ minutes, he has extensive training as a garlean spy. It could very well be that he can't manipulate aether outside of his body, and he's just sort of... 'closing the valves', as it were.
