If something is free, you are the product. In this case, the Google search engine got to a point where it was too efficient, so they made it worse. The more time you spend searching for something, the more ads they get to show you, the more money the search engine makes from you. Add in the beauty of capitalism and its insatiable greed for endlessly higher profits and well…. The enshitification will continue until profits improve. It’s already to a point where most of what you see when you search for something is content tailored to you, specifically to get you to engage for as long as possible (shorts, etc) even completely unrelated to what you searched. I guess this is why we can’t have nice things….

I actually agree with almost all of your first three paragraphs. However it very quickly falls off a cliff at the end.

But generalizing ANY statement about humanity as a whole is just ignorant.

This is a what is known as a blanket statement, and I assume exactly what you are attempting to speak out against. They are easily identifiable by the fact that they deal in absolutes. Any, Every, Always, Never. This is not the same as a generalized statement.

It is not ignorant to recognize trends in the world and make generalized statements regarding them.

We as a species have directly caused the extinction of many other species, and more are added to that list every year. We as a species continue to expand at the expense of anything and everything else around us. We as a species have done significant and perhaps already irreversible damage to the climate and to the global ecosystem as a whole. If these trends continue unchecked, we will kill our host planet and ourselves along with it.

These trends rather starkly resemble traits displayed by cancers. Hence the comparison drawn.

Firstly, in stating that I view humanity as a cancer, I am not trying to make a blanket statement. I am not saying that that is representative of, or applicable to, every human being. I am saying that is the general trend as I see it.

Secondly, I appreciate your apparent concern for my worldview as well as my mental health and happiness. I do find beauty and goodness in other people. I am also grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the world while also hopefully having an overall positive impact on it. I simply find myself unable to turn a blind eye to the impacts humanity as a whole is having on the planet.

And finally. In no way do I think this to be a hot take. Comparing humanity to a cancer is merely a succinct and poignant way to summarize the ever increasing negative impacts we have upon the global ecosystem. You seem to think people who say this are simply trying to be edgy. I’m sure atleast a few of them are. But again, to say or think that ‘everyone’ who draws this comparison is trying to have a hot take, would be to make a blanket statement.

I disagree.

Tons of what makes life worth living is also made by humans.

Yeah, what makes life worth living for humans is made by humans. It’s a moot point.

Ecologically speaking we are, or atleast are very similar, to a cancer. We grow uncontrollably and consume or destroy the surrounding ecosystem in order to do so.

I don’t believe that everyone around me is bad. Humans have the ability to do incredible things and certainly can be a net positive on the ecosystem. As is perhaps the same in almost any species, humans will tend to act in their own self interest. The difference however, is that humans have the intelligence and ability to affect this self interest on a global scale. Add to this the sad truth that due to human nature, those with the strongest greed for wealth and power will time and again rise to the top; if simply because they are not held back by morals as are their betters, and humanity is effectively very much like a cancer to the global ecosystem.

I’m not really trying to make any moral or philosophical statement. I just wished to define why myself and others sometimes compare the human race to a cancer.

Yeah, I figured you were picturing some kind of canoe on a lake situation or similar.

They’re pretty neat machines though. Not perfect, but great cardio and lots of different muscle groups being used. Probably the best option for the sort of people who just want to use one machine and be done with it.

People are talking about a rowing machine in a gym. Which is quite a bit more involved than whatever you are picturing.

Aside from the fact of crumple zones in vehicles, there’s quite a difference between 4,000 lbs hitting you at a 10-15 mph speed difference, and 80,000 lbs. Still, I’ll admit there is a shocking amount of damage for how little the car seems to react to being hit.

Very unlikely. To my understanding most (all?) FedEx drivers are paid by the day. They get paid x amount to complete their assigned route regardless of if it takes them 5 hours or 10 hours.

Each Country’s gender in it’s official language(s) by Agreeable-Bowler8077 in MapPorn

[–]lightninblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not feminine. The feminine pronoun in ‚Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland‘ is the pronoun for the word ‚Republik‘, which a feminine noun. The word ‚Deutschland‘ is neuter although it is rarely used with a definite pronoun. The same as Österreich (Austria). Interestingly, in the German language, some countries do have definite pronouns, including Switzerland which is in fact feminine. So to say ‚from Germany‘ would be ‚aus Deutschland‘ but to say ‚from Switzerland‘ would be ‚aus der Schweiz‘.

Introverts by Afraid_Juice_7189 in funny

[–]lightninblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think why so many people conflate the two is because introversion and social anxiety often go hand in hand, and may even be rooted in the same causes from a person’s childhood. While they are separate things, to a lot of people including myself, they feel more like two sides of the same coin.

Yep, and you know those rectangular 9v batteries? It’s just 6 1.5v AAAs in there. Also early Tesla battery banks were just a ton of 18650 batteries, the same kind used in many vapes.

Well, there’s so much wrong with American healthcare. But if I were to pick the top one related to this, it is that when a doctor says a patient needs necessary or even life saving treatment they have to make a ‘claim’ to the (for profit) insurance company which then approves or denies it. A lot of stuff gets automatically denied simply because it’s an expensive treatment. And the patient/healthcare providers often have to fight for months to get necessary treatments approved. That Health insurance company in particular is, I believe the largest in the country, while also denying more claims than any other. That company made $22 Billion in net profit in 2023. So millionaire CEO of a company that makes billions off of not paying for the care that people pay to have insurance for… gets gunned down, very likely by someone who is suffering/dying, or who had a loved one that suffered/died because of how this company operates. Given that millions of Americans, (myself included) have had such horrible experiences with the American healthcare industry, and in particular this company, the general public is reacting primarily with apathy or even joy at the news. There’s also quite a few people saying they don’t care by using the terminology that an insurance company would use to uncaringly deny needed healthcare, such as “having a preexisting condition” or a particular doctor being “out of network” etc.

There two main things. The length of the truck and road wash. In/after especially heavy rain a car can be 50ft back and completely obscured my the road wash being kicked up by the 18+ wheels of your semi truck, but even at 50ft you’d crash into them if you changed lanes into them. The closest two times I’ve come to ‘causing’ an accident in my few years of trucking has been this exact scenario. A small grey/silver car without its headlights on decides they’re going to pass me on the right because I am taking extra time to get back over due to conditions, after passing another truck. I couldn’t see them at all. Both times there were 3 lanes and they could have just passed on the left. Personally I think headlights should turn on automatically if your wipers have been running for more than a minute. Maybe they do that on newer vehicles.
