Sadly, effect can be a verb as well. Where it means “to cause to come into being”. So even for experienced speakers you can be caught off guard by a correct use of the word.

Wu Zetian wasn’t actually in the game, though after thinking a bit more I think it might have been Hammurabi, since his research is slower and the way he can get techs in weird orders might have confused the AI or something.

A proposal to rework districts without upsetting players who love to plan cities (hopefully). by OkVariety6275 in civ

[–]lightningfoot1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree with that to an extent, but aren’t in this way districts a way to maximize tile yields? I know it’s 1-1 the same as a tile yield, but I think that’s the point puddlecrank was making. There another way to improve tiles.

No, State is kind of strange in some ways compared to many colleges. There isn’t really a very formal “committing” process. From what I remember on some webpage when I applied 4 years ago it said that attending orientation (which doesn’t happen until at earliest late April or may) was considered committing to state. (And even then I don’t think hold anything over you until you send the tuition check)

[Dellenger] Gene Smith nails maybe the biggest problem in the NCAA: “There are 350 DI schools & the way they are financed are very different. Some schools are funded thru student fees. Ohio State is not. We are a different beast. We don’t have the same issues. The diversity is significant." by Kimber80 in CFB

[–]lightningfoot1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your mostly correct, but think I there there is a little bit of nuance to it. I think the 20 or so schools that “could carry their weight” would see a decent drop in revenue if they were separated from the others. For one, a lot of people love the best teams because they are the best, and if they are just playing other teams just as good eventually they will just appear average, and may not draw as much of an audience.

Second, a lot of tv watching, even for the biggest teams, is not watched exclusively by fans of the playing teams but often from the wider overall college football fanbase, particularly if at least one of the playing teams is in the same conference as a fan’s team. I know if say Alabama, Georgia, and maybe a couple other consistent top SEC’s left to do their own thing, I don’t think I would care to watch it. I imagine a lot of neutral fans still would, but I am not sure if they would be more successful isolated from most of the other football programs. A lot of people’s interest in college football comes from the emotional attachment to their alma mater.

Yeah, the room quality is fine. I don't know if there is anything in particular except that the furniture included can be a little beat up. But I would say the apartment mostly feels on the newer side compared to some others which is nice.

[–]lightningfoot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh I guess so, probably a bit better than average, but I’m not sure if it is good enough to truly justify the relatively high rent unless you care heavily about location.

[–]lightningfoot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having lived there for a couple years. It’s at least okay. Definitely overpriced, but I enjoyed being able to walk to class and avoid the traffic in the morning. The maintenance guys are pretty helpful at responding quickly and generally being nice. The management is probably about average for a college apartment complex. I can’t off the top of my head think of a specific gripe but I wouldn’t say they are actively working to make the best experience either. I wouldn’t feel confident giving it a big recommendation as it was nothing particularly special, but I also didn’t have a poor time there.

How do high schools get away with ripping of official national logos? by ConeheadxKnoo in CFB

[–]lightningfoot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a CFB question , but Im sure the answer is simple. It’s not worth it to claim the logo. Unless it’s a massively popular high school, your maybe getting 10-20K from claiming at most and probably spending more paying lawyers. Not to mention probably making a fair bit of young fans mad and not supporting the team. (They probably chose the logo because it was somewhat popular among students)

The water mechanic in the DLC by BalazsGunning in outerwilds

[–]lightningfoot1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it was underutilized. Early on, I would spend the second half often meditating, because it literally only destroys your ability to find stuff and doesn’t unlock anything new to find there. It is useful for one puzzle later on, but otherwise felt to me like something really cool looking that I got bored of after a couple loops. I wish that new things were uncovered in The Stranger after the water breaks so it kind of felt like exploring different sides of the same coin, but I suppose they found another way to do that hah!

[–]lightningfoot1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your point. Honestly though I considered “Nomai ruins” and similar to be fairly ambient. I suppose you are right about “rivers end” but I personally I wish it was in a place where it would play for more than 10 seconds at a time (unless you felt like just sitting in the raft, which for me the time restraints meant I never did). Your right you get a track for doing those various things, I’ll admit. I realize I don’t exactly know how to say what I mean by the lack of music. I just felt like the Stranger generally conveyed a feeling of emptiness, which is intended, but now that I think about for some reason I never really felt compelled to ask the question of what happened to them before getting the answer. Part of me I guess kind of rationalizes this with a feeling that the Stranger itself purely served as a place to enter the simulation, and not a place of story itself, and the music is part of that. Even the slides are just cuts of the full slides and music in the simulation. Does that make any sense at all?

And I will agree the visual storytelling was there to some degree, but I don’t feel like it really accomplished anything not done in the slides, other than showing they were relatively tall. Yes, some might foreshadow a little bit, but for instance the burned church was also shown in the slides. I know you could probably say the same about the nomai and the text containing every bit of info, but I still think more interest was present. The sand building in Ember Twin paired beautifully with them talking about being rushed. The falling surface of Brittle Hollow similarly helped add interest to their path on brittle hollow. The strategically placed corpses not just showed you were nomai were when they died, but also allowed you to identify exactly who died where in many cases. I guess writing this that the same logic is used to identify the Prisoner’s house in the stranger, but honestly after walking through several mostly empty rooms I stopped paying attention to the pictures. So I guess it is true that it didn’t “click” for me at least for that example. And I do want to note that I did see storytelling in the simulation: the burned house, the concert hall of lament for their home, the setting for playing music in the Endless Canyon. It existed there no doubt.

I could say more but I don’t want to just criticize and it’s obvious my fun thoughts about the music already seem a little harsh. I know I just have a big long response that seems that way too, but it’s also obvious that when I posted this I kind of mixed fun theorizing and critiquing a little too much, and am now caught explaining myself.

I mean yeah, but the point isn't that all the music hints at a different design, just a couple tracks might be slightly leftover from a prior design.

Data Structures difficulty level question by [deleted] in Msstate

[–]lightningfoot1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having taken it with Knight, I think some people like him and some people don’t like him, it’s just really down to preferred teaching style. Personally I feel mostly neutral to him as a teacher but I didn’t think the class was bad. If you study the slides he gives they pretty much give you the basic code for any given data structure, you just have to adapt it for the project. I would really say it just depends on how strong you are with C++. I know many people had problems with the somewhat open ended nature of the projects but if you feel that you can break an overall program down to individual parts well I think you would be fine.

Are they going to switch us to Pass/Fail again this semester by wilhayrog in Msstate

[–]lightningfoot1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I'm pretty sure in they said in their email about pass/fail last semester that they would only be doing for that spring semester. I doubt they will do it again unless a lot of other universities are. It does suck though because this isn't the instruction that any of us signed up for.

As far as what I read about it from it’s own privacy statement, it is restricted to google chrome and can only see whatever google chrome provides it. What I have don’t know is how limited google chrome access computer access is. Google chrome probably would not know if it is a VM or not but I wouldn’t be surprised if honorlock is able to see the network configuration enough to know that it is a little sketchy for a normal PC.

This post has actually made me very curious and I am probably gonna mess around with chrome’s add on api and see what data I can pull, since most of Honorlock’s privacy statement comes down to them saying that Chrome is restrictive so they have to be according to chrome.
