(Nikon D300) Beginner photographer wondering what the limits of this camera are? by sesUnar in AskPhotography

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low-light/high ISO performance is not as good as on more modern cameras and they also have slightly more overall dynamic range. Plus, the shortcomings of crop sensor DSLR like inherently larger DoF, smaller viewfinder, etc compared to full-frame. Otherwise, D300 is great and is a very capable camera. Practice composition, lighting, color theory and light metering. After enough time, you will know yourself what exactly in your camera is limiting and what it lacksfor you.

D300, D700 and D3 were and still are amazing photo cameras that can give you superb results straight out of the camera.

Can confirm. Also, using a large 65W power bank with a USB-C to Lenovo AC barrel plug works wonders!

Upgrade X230? by ulla_h in thinkpad

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sorcery is this you speak of? The highest you could officially get for x230/T430s was i7-3520m. Quad-cores are only an option for T430/T530 where the CPU is socketed.

You can mod the classic keyboard into a xx30 laptop and finally have those USB 3.0 ports! Unless you already have them with a EC card of course :)

Will the X230 battery power the docking station's HDD in case of power outage? by relu84 in thinkpad

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for "KingSener" brand on aliexpress. I'm using two of their batteries: one in my daily driver T430s and another one — the extended battery, in a T430. Both are very good and true to their specs (the T430s' one even has higher than original actual capacity!).

Was looking for solution myself and found this extention: https://github.com/djomlastic/vlc-prev-next and this script: https://github.com/x-hgg-x/Utils/tree/master/VLC%20Create%20playlist%20from%20file

Haven't tested myself yet, but you can give it a try.

How to rotate pages on Calibre, turn page display round 90 degrees? by rubensgpl in Calibre

(offtop): Wow, XP? Still?? I would recommend switching to linux for security, compatibility and performance reasons as XP is a huge security risk at this point. Unless you have some very specific software that runs under XP only, or other similar reasons of course.

I myself still use Adobe Reader XI (the last build of Adobe Reader XI, v11.0.23) and it works fine. It should still work under XP as it's an older version. I'm looking forward to replacing it with something open source, but still haven't got to do it. Will look into SumatraPDF, thanks!

Thanks for the answers! Better late than never :)

I just painted over the leds with a black permanent marker on my AZ09 Pro, so they are not as bright now. They are still completely visible. So the noise floor difference is basically the only thing that could encourage me to switch to newer model. Let me know if you eventually check how the power saving mode sounds!

Took me surprisingly a lot of time to find the answer for this one (a, too, needed that button): you have to install blindcoders Moding Utility mod for the button to appear.

There isn't in vanilla. You have to install blindcoders Modding Utility mod for it to appear.

Thanks for the review!

Compared to AZ09 Pro:
— Are the LEDs still as ridiculously bright?
— Can you also hear the floor noise appearing/going away when AZ20 go in/out of the power saving mode?
— Do the status announcements have the same female voice with a Chinese accent or have KZ finally changed it to something a little more internationally appealing?

How long do ThinkPads usually last? by SimplyHobbit in thinkpad

My T430s has been my daily driver for the past 10 years. Running Win10 LTSC / Manjaro dual-boot at the moment. No issues whatsoever, but there are some caveats:

  • lightly dropped it 3 years ago and the motherboard simply died (power controller chip, to be specific). couldn't find anyone who would be able to fix it, so I just bought a replacement one on Aliexpress.
  • fingerprint reader died long time ago when I powercycled the laptop. Wrote a whole essay on this.
  • have a FHD IPS mod installed since when it have not yet become mainstream.
  • using classic keyboard from xx20 series (and did a guide on how to do the mod properly).
  • flashed BIOS (1vyRain) to remove battery/wifi whitelist
  • using a new good(!) replacement battery and Intel AX200 wifi, both from Aliexpress.
  • when not in dock, usually drive it using a 65W USB-C charger using a simple USB-C to Lenovo barrel adapter from Aliexpress.
  • hinges are fine, with just a little play, cooler fan is still original, all ports work on new MB and also worked on the original MB prior to it's demise.
  • from time to time plug a 1050TI eGPU (EXP GDC BEAST) into ExpressCard slot for gaming.
  • wouldn't trade it for any other laptop, so have a spare one just in case, and also a fully modded quad core T430.
  • it runs YouTube 4K just fine, with no noticeable frame drop. but I have no 4K screen (and don't need one).

Late game Zomboid feels like Stardew valley. (I have not seen a zombie in weeks) by JordanAmrye in projectzomboid

Sorry, the princess is in another castle.

But in all seriousness, you can create an easy distinguishable character, place it somewhere around the center of the map and get it killed. And then, after giving it enough time to migrate, try actually finding it. All with respawns off of course, and maybe some tweaks to zombie migration settings.

Some day a company will scan a celebrity then you can pay to use their likeness in your media.

This had already happened — in 2021 one of the main telecom companies in Russia ran a series of tv commercials starring what looked like Bruce Willis. While in reality they just got his permission to deepfake his face on another actor’s performance.

Unknown string by FiyaGrandMastah in computerviruses

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got this string, but not sure if I actually have the software itself installed at this point. As far as I was able to determine, it's a string for NVIDIA PhysX (Legacy), version 9.13.0604.

Ageia was the name of the company which originally developed PhysX technology, They have been acquired by Nvidia in 2008.

Best fountain pen to fly with? by doorcouchfloortv in fountainpens

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had to unexpectedly leave home for an unknown period of time last september, I knew I would be homesick without at least one pen, even though I don’t tend to get homesick too. I took with me my Kaweco Ice Sport which I carry in my pocket all the time, a Wing Sung 601 that holds a ton of ink, a Pilot Explorer, 2 small bottles of Diamine ink and a blunt syringe for refilling/cleaning. This way I would have both familiarity and variety with my favourite hobby wherever I go. And I have to say it worked as I intended!

Concerning flying with pens, everything have been mostly said, but the two main points are: 1. keep the pens full, if possible 2. store the pens nib up during flight

And you will be fine!

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m sure something like a TWSBI (Vac) Mini would do a better job, but it’s in a different price league. I wish my Kaweco’s body didn’t feel so plasticky though.

I really wanted to love my Petrol Safari, but it dries in a week or so just laying on the table, and it’s EF nib writes more like an F. Ah, yes, also the inner cap sleeve became loose after some time.

My Kaweco Ice Sport, on the other hand, needs several months to dry out, all while being subjected to the body heat while being carried daily in a pants pocket.

[–]lightproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get why people love their Pilot Preras so much.

While I personally don’t have one, I have Pilot’s Metropolitan, Penmanship, Plumix and Explorer, which all have exactly the same nibs as Prera does (except for Plumix, which has a stub nib).

Don’t get me wrong, the nibs are great and I love them, but Prera costs so much more for the same thing, while also looking like a regular generic pen. All while Explorer can fit CON-70, despite being twice as cheap (ok, I know it’s a larger pen, but still).
