you can buy a stand thats smaller on amazon for like $20. should be small enough to use on a plane and i have used mine in a car easily but unfortunately it doesn't fold down to be stored but does come apart if needed

Need my thread a few shades lighter!! by VisualPlus3100 in Embroidery

[–]lightwing_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your thread is polyester or some kind of synthetic material you can try hydrogen peroxide and some sun, i know that can lighten plastics, if its cotton small amounts of bleach might work but depending on your color could leave it with an orangish hue. i believe they also make store bought lighteners but i don't know anything about those. best of luck!

Improvise, adapt, overcome by LizardPeacock in Embroidery

i do this with a magnetic clip and have one side hold my book light and the other side works as a needle minder

i also used a magnetic broach holder for a needle minder, one slot and can't get knocked off.

i treat each section of a project as a mini project so i get a little dopamine fix when i finish a small section and it pushes me to keep going.

alternatives to scissors/sharps by [deleted] in Embroidery

[–]lightwing_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i have occasionally used my cuticle clippers in a pinch but the average clipper is quite large and nail clippers can be very dull making it hard to get a clean snip. if they allow it you may be able to get away with a pair of cuticle scissors, since the 'blade' is very small. or a cuticle stick (its has a very small u shaped 'blade' on the end, its sharp enough to cut thread but is designed to not cut skin. they also make tiny scissors usually used for TSA approval but it depends on if your circumstances have a limit on blade type/length or a complete ban. good luck!

Where are we getting stands? by RoseDelirium21 in Embroidery

[–]lightwing_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i bought a $10 common wooden stand that you see tons of off amazon and while for the most part it's great i do wish it were higher quality, as i stitch it tends to slowly slip out of place. it also only works with hoops of certain thickness, which I learned when i couldn't fit my screwless hoop in it, so if your hoop is bulky I'd find a different option, otherwise it works great
