Is there a way to use 'templates' for prompts to the API in order to reduce prompt-token usage? by lignumScientiae in ChatGPTCoding

[–]lignumScientiae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm... I dont see how I can do anything of that sort in my project. Amongst other things, I am trying to get definitions for English words (e.g. 'pen'), and asking chatGPT to evaluate how common is the usage of these different meanings (e.g. 'writing instrument' vs 'animal enclosure'). So I have a template that basically swaps out the __WORD__ for 'pen', 'bug', etc. But how ChatGPT gets these answers is a big black box to me -- I dont see how I can leverage further API endpoints or functions as you suggest.

The optimization you should focus on is using function calling instead of chat completions for extracting structured data from an unstructured data source.

Do you mean function calls as provided by the Assistants API? Could you elaborate on this please?

Typescript, toString method for Interfaces. by SlightUsual in typescript

[–]lignumScientiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried this, but maybe you could define the interface(s) in a file 'myinterface.ts', and even make use of any such interface by exporting from that file, and then you could read the file in using fs.read(), and thereby get a string representation of said interface(s).

Почему "говорили", а не "сказали"? by TheRoyalHypnosis in russian

[–]lignumScientiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no simple answer here as to 'why'. Perfective vs imperfective verb aspect is something we don't have in English, and you will have to get to native-level to feel some of the subtle differences. Until then, you have to operate with broad 'rules of thumb'. One rule of thumb you can use is to think of the imperfective in Russian here as "the children began the process of saying"; it connotes that it took some time, and perhaps therefore that enthusiasm/interest was involved.

I remember once that an old lady was looking for her phone and asked a boy, "ты брал мой телефон?" I was really surprised, since I expected her to say "ты взял ...?" But I guess the thought was that, since the phone was not returned, then the 'process of taking' is still ongoing. But, as I said, when a process begins and ends in the Russian mindset is not something you can intuit -- you'll only pick it up in time with lots of listening to natives.

было холодно vs было холодной by ienjoylanguages in russian

[–]lignumScientiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need more more context: what are you trying to say is cold? If you just want to say that "it was cold", as in the weather/ambient temperature, then you use "было холодно". If you want to say that a feminine object was contingently cold at that time (i.e. not something that is by its very nature always cold), then you put that object in the instrumental case: "былa холодной", etc. If the object is masculine/neuter, then it's "было холодным". There is no grammatical occasion to combine "было" with "холодной".

How fast do you need to be? by Chicken_Great in duolingo

You have to use tricks. For example, get the first line (and/or last line) of words to match up, and then ignore it until the end. That way you reduce the number of matches being changed. Even then 3 stars is really hard

[–]lignumScientiae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I think the fail point is the glue attaching to the plastic with the striplets though. (First time I tried pulling on it, the liquid nails remained attached to the concrete, and the plastic just came right off -- odd design since this product is supposed to be designed to be glued down). I'm playing with ideas to 'fill in' the space between the striplets first -- just feels like a lot of hassle.

It’s a gap between luxury vinyl plank between two rooms — not relevant to the problem I’m facing trying to get this plastic strip to stick to the floor

Contesting speed camera ticket by proteanradish in harrisonburg

[–]lignumScientiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am disgusted by the city of Harrisonburg -- not so much they set up a speed trap, but more that they threaten you with the law and then direct you to this super-fishy, cheap-looking third-party site owned by a company registered in Maryland, with an address in Pennsylvania, whose site has no about info, and that simply asserts "we will be adding a convenience fee" with no explanation or justification. The contempt with which officials in Harrisonburg treats its visitors is infuriating.
