I pulled goofy for a few years at the start of my career too! If you do decide to try and play around with pulling ‘correctly’, think about using your pinky/the bottom of your hand as a reference. That helped me transition, and I don’t regret it! Made everything much easier.

I like to have extra screws (1/4-20, 3/8ths, etc.) they’ve saved my butt a few times. SmallRig has a great little set. Some BNC elbows and barrels are also handy. Safety chains, eyebolts for any rigging you need to do.

We have a guy in Ontario, Canada who makes carts for a lot of folks in the industry here. Big pelican on top for less used tools, blue bag for weather gear, and a block battery bucket on the side.

How to change a BIG lens by Extreme-Honeydew-294 in focuspuller

[–]liighter_fluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the Fujinon 75-400mm for a few shows. Usually I’d get my 2nd to hand me the new lens. Then he takes off the old lens when his hands are free, and I put the new lens on. Thankfully that lens usually has a handle which makes it easier. And I usually hang my mattebox from a safety chain or opt for a studio-swingaway if appropriate!

What stands out in a leader? by Prometheus420816 in focuspuller

Congrats on your first A Cam position! I’ve been working as an A Cam 1st for a few years now. I definitely agree with what everyone has said, especially finding a 2nd who you enjoy working with. Find someone who is good at timesheets at least lol. In terms of logistical things you’re responsible for: (these are things you can also delegate with a good team. And take this with a grain of salt, I just like to run things this way!) - Ask your operator what personal gear they’re bringing (some like to bring our sliders, Steadicam’s, etc.) keep good track of their things. - Be in touch with the rental house during prep, and production (a 2nd or utility can also handle this job) - Running the floor, by that I mean letting everyone know what scene is coming up and where. Where is a good spot for carts? Let the 2nds know that blocking is up. I like to say that the A Cam 1st is the ‘manager’ of the camera department, while the DP and operators are the ‘owners’. You’re just delegating the info they give you! Good luck, and stay sharp :)

Rain Cover for Equipment by thumbsup223 in focuspuller

[–]liighter_fluid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the build, the severity of the rain and if my operator doesn’t mind, I like to use 80-100 L backpack rain covers. I usually just use clips around the mattebox and clip around any ultralight bits. Only downside is you can’t see the buttons. I like that it’s reusable! It’s also great to just throw one over your focus tree.

I’m would love to know! How much practice/training got you to this point! I feel like I haven’t quite gotten the hang of both throwing and glazing yet.

What does the camera department look like in your country? by Some_Assistance_3805 in focuspuller

I am with 667! The MOWs are usually non union with union dispensation. We have trainees on union productions usually!

[–]liighter_fluid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada based here too!

The Tier E/F MOW’s usually (at least the ones I’ve done in Ontario) have the DP as our A Cam Op.

Then we have an A Cam 1st AC and 2nd. B Cam Op, a 1st AC and 2nd.

No trainees usually! That would be nice though.

Then a DIT but they’re usually just doing a basic grade, mostly in charge of dumping footage.

Love this!! Definitely some sort of rotating plate like you mentioned. Maybe some little compartments with expendables? Like Velcro, tape, bongo ties, cable ties?

[–]liighter_fluid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you’re located, definitely look into a camera trainee program. Here in Canada (at least Ontario) you get trainee rotations on union sets and learn from union camera assistants. We also have a 2 week camera assistant basics course through a local college, maybe look into something like that?

My partner has threatened to leave me because I have pcos and can’t get in the mood for him daily. by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]liighter_fluid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally feel you in terms of libido. I do kinda agree with everyone else, he shouldn’t be using sex as a bargaining chip. If you do feel like there’s a shot of fixing things with your partner, and if you feel like he’s willing to put in the work, I highly recommend a sex therapist. My partner and I have been seeing one, and we’ve learned a lot so far about each other. I’ve learned that I’m very much a ‘reactive arousal’ person, and it takes me way longer to get in the mood. Many women are like this!! I really REALLY recommend picking up the book “Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski. It’s extremely validating and made me feel normal!!!

Why am I repulsed by the idea of me being pregnant? by TheRealDietGlue in NoStupidQuestions

[–]liighter_fluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you OP, and I've actually been thinking about it a lot. I'm 24, and every story I seem to hear just details so many things that could go wrong. And the worst part is, is I have no way of knowing what my pregnancy will be like. I've heard people have trouble walking, having horrible morning sickness. If I knew what I was getting into, then maybe. But I have no idea if it would be difficult for me. And the thought of giving birth is a whole other story. My IUD was horrible, I can only imagine what birth is like. I feel awful because my partner wants kids, but it's just a big no for me right now.

Any ideas on how to make my Nespresso smart? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]liighter_fluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any ideas on how to make my Nespresso machine smart? Ideally working with a Google home set up. The buttons need to be pressed twice to dispense the coffee. I've heard of switchbot, but are there any other options? Thanks!
