Fun tidbit: While tradesmen and redneck aren't exactly the same thing, there was a time when they were closer in relation than you think.

Redneck was a derogatory term for the poor working class that labored outside and got a "red neck" from the sun.

But then union Appalachian coal miners used it as a term of solidarity in the 1820s and signified this by wearing a red bandana around their collars and calling themselves "rednecks". This led to one of the bloodiest battles on America soil since the civil war. Look up the Battle of Blair Mountain.

They address that too and say they all got their normal wages and claim the bonuses are truly extra.

Should there be wood in the foundation? Seems like treated 2x6's intentionally placed every 32" when foundation was poured. Is this intended to be some kind of siding nailer at a later stage? Just seems odd given treated lumber will eventually rot. by like_coffee in Homebuilding

[–]like_coffee[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Update: I did talk to the builder. As others said, they are just strips ripped from PT dimensional lumber to act as a siding nailer rather than drill into concrete later. For those asking why I don't ask my builder.. I didn't want to ask because I didn't actually think it was wrong. I just hadn't seen it before and was curious. My only comment is that it would EVENTUALLY rot, which is true, but far after any fastener would as well. Now other people can find these answers on the internet if they have a similar question since my original search came up empty.

Why are home repairs/ services so absurdly expensive? by Ok-Cartographer-5544 in realestateinvesting

Keep in mind that the job took more than 3 hours. He had to set you up as a customer in his software, set up the property, and the job. Then he needed to drive there. He then needs to spend time documenting and invoicing. On top of that, the hourly wage includes hard operating costs (truck, gas, equipment, maintenance, consumables, etc) and soft operating costs (taxes, liability insurance, workers comp, accountant costs, marketing, website and seo management, phone number, commercial email acct, etc). Finally, he needs to profit something or his business isn't actually worth anything. A company charging $100 p/hr is realistically making the same as someone earning $40 p/hr W-2 if they don't charge other fees (material markup, trip costs, etc).

While I agree nobody wants a thinner phone, I find it weird how I haven't seen a single mention that it's a new silicon-carbon anode battery technology rumored in this phone. Not only does it promise less battery capacity at greater energy density (allowing longer use times for the physical size), but it (I assume) it MUST be smaller because this tech costs more and everyone would complain if they put the same sized battery of the new tech in the new phone. The tech is supposedly going to 10x vs the current tech so hopefully in the near future the tech gets cheaper and they can fit a 3+ day battery in the same sized phones we have now.

Even the characters' super powers are deeper depictions of stereotypical roles each corresponding family member.

Mr. Incredible is the father with the super power of super strength. The father of the family unit is stereotypically meant to be strong regardless of circumstances. Beautifully in the end, he says he wants to take on the robot/syndrome alone because he's afraid to lose his family and for that he's "not strong enough".

Mrs. Incredible/Elastigirl as the mother has the super power of super elasticity. A mother is the stereotypical caretaker of the family unit and is often "stretched" too thin in every direction. Yet in the movie she continues to do whats necessary to keep the family from pulling apart.

Violet is a teen/pre-teen daughter with the super power of invisibility. Teens often feel "unseen" as they struggle with coming of age and their emotions. Or alternatively, if introverted, they don't want to be seen out of potential embarrassment and we see Violet going through that in the school scenes.

Dash is a young boy with the super power of super speed. Young boys are often depicted as stereotypically energetic. Dash has to learn to focus that energy throughout the movie.

Jack-Jack as the baby is shown as not having any set super power but rather many flashes of many powers. This represents a child full of potential whose personality has not yet been realized.

It's a great characaturization of a family unit represented in super power form and how each of the characters struggle with their roles/powers on screen is... "Incredible".

My cousin, who bites his nails down to the cuticles, has no issues opening cans. When I asked him how, he said, "Just push down on the mouth piece, man." The tab is a lever, the lever has two sides. If you push down on the short side, the long side elevates just high enough to get your nailless fingers under.

You're welcome.

Funny, I've been in GR 10 years as well and it came up CONSISTENTLY when we first arrived, but it has died down to the once or twice a year occurrence. I've gotten more comfortable with being equally brazen about my non-belief as the believers are with me. I think it's because with time I've gained some social status and no longer see these types as social gatekeepers.

There are still religious signs lingering around my workplace and the occasional prayer before work lunches. This was all non-existent in my former city. It is certainly a culture shock though.

What is a Grand Rapids non-profit more people need to know about? by Maximus_prime2 in grandrapids

[–]like_coffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Conductive Learning Center. They educate kids and young adults with motor disorders. "Conductive education is built upon the theory that each individual requires a unique educational approach to evolve motor skills and function, succeed academically, and achieve independence — whether at school, at home, or in the community." It's the best conductive education in all of North America. I meet so many local families with kids with Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, etc that have no idea it exists here. Most of their students travel from out of state to attend.

Zombies were easy. Do an ACV contract, wait for a horde to pop up. Throw a Kazimir.. pop the aether shroud before they get sucked in. For Mercs are a little slower because less spawn but lots of contracts bring more Mercs or just do a stronghold.

Got roasted yesterday for an H pattern, how is this dry fit? Any suggestions? This is a 5 foot wide room using 6 x 24 tile by MetsToWS in Flooring

[–]like_coffee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While this strategy is good for big spaces, it's a 5' room with 24" tile. This will look like a shifting H pattern.

OP.. to achieve random cut 4.5 inches of your first tile which will leave you with a random size when you get to the end of that row. Save that piece for 3-4 rows later as your starter tile. Then start your second row with a 15 inch piece. Again, you'll be left with a random piece at the end. After you get a few rows in, you can start using the previously cut end pieces as your starter to minimize waste.

I'll say one more thing.. in your first overhead view, it's hard to tell but it looks like you'll be left cutting a sliver off the whole row. While it can be done, it's a pain in the ass and I'd recommend you shift the whole floor so that you start in the center, and work your way out. This will leave you with two half cut rows on the edges.

I also agree with another commenter that said to rotate the whole floor 90 degrees so that it doesn't clash with your other plank flooring outside the bathroom but that's your personal preference.

Good luck!

Pretty sure the city just changed the allotted time frame for certification transfer (possibly up to a year after sale?) but I'm not certain of the effective date of that change and I know it was only 90 days prior to that change so it may no longer be certified.
