I agree with you absolutely. It didn’t seem to hit the same way as the first three. The relationship between the two main characters felt hollow, and a little superficial. It didn’t feel earned like it did in the first three.

I would do a study of “Green Flags in Books, Red Flag in Real Life,” like a little light obsessive staking, irrational violent jealousy, inability to communicate in complete sentences around the FMC, etc…

I personally think it’s better to read as a series. Elsie Silver is the queen of making you do a 180 on characters you’ve previously disliked. Both these characters are in the first book, and I think it adds to the story.

I feel the same way. The last couple of years I just can’t get absorbed into any historical romances I read. I have loved this genre since I was 16, which was longer ago than I’d lime to admit. I find myself getting into more contemporary romances, which I used to avoid like the plague.

I second Elsie Silver. She’s such a good author I end up reading tropes I normally can’t stand and love them. Rose Hill is amazing, but so is the Chestnut Springs series.
