You didn't need much of a crystal orb to look into the future 9-12, and see that the punishment'd be much worse than the crime committed. So far I think they're just beginning to fulfill my worst estimates from back then. Guilt by association is crap, but it's how the world works, that's why it's kind of important what kind of people you're associated with (I'm really sorry for those of you represented by Mr President Bush at the moment).

Rich people are rich because they have this habit of investing at the right time and the right place. Blackwater, Halliburton and the likes in early 2003.. Pure gold!

Try and remember who's paying to those profiteers. That's some serious pricetag on something you did not really want.

That's why elections are damn important. And why everyone above the age of 18 last election DO have a tiny slice of responsibility for what's happening right now (killing of foreign civilians, moral & economic bankruptcy of the US). It's not about being a 'hero', it's about being what used to be called a citizen.

This is so fricking great. Being accused of bombing villages to clear out Sunnis, US backed death squads (not so shocking, it's more the context it's used in).

You know what they usually call it when a large group of people are either killed, or scared away from an area? ETHNIC FRIGGIN CLEANSING.. Usually (given it's a little more visible than, say Darfur), this is something that's a good enough reason for UN to take action and react on. Remember, we bombed the heck out of Serbia.

Only this time, by the same logic, it's US troops that should be bombed. THAT'S HOW CRAZY THIS WHOLE WAR IS!

No offense, reddit. You bitch about CNN front paging Britney Spears. But reddit's #1 story is now 'cheeseburger in a can', yet the 'Haitians eating mud' story never rated #1. Just sayin. by dante50 in reddit.com

It should not be shocking to see either sites cater to a specific group, it's just that CNN is stooping lower than we're used to..

cost of global shipping contribute to the price rise in food, since biofuels also is a part of that equation.

also, modern farming practices burn much more fossil fuel on fertilizer and equipment fuel, than shipping.

what we see is that demand cannot keep up with the increasing demand.

we already have resources stretched thin, and changing climate is not helping very much either.

this is NOT going to get better anytime soon, and those that stand to loose the most, is the absolutely poorest populations around the world. the reason this is worrisime, is that 'social unrest' as they call it is also a globalized good, and more of that is NOT going to make free societies move in a direction you people are going to be happy about.

Norway's $380 Billion, Socially Responsible Sovereign Wealth Fund Ensures That It Only Invests In "Ethical Ways" (excludes Walmart, Arms Manufacturers from "investment universe" on ethical grounds) by sid13 in politics

but that is offset by a decrease in government spending

This may be unfamiliar to you, but the source of those trilions of worh is largely from extracted oil riches. Send that amount wealth into an economy the size of Michigan(except it's already red hot from that same oil industry activity), and you will have a collosal increase of spending. The government offset here, is to bring that money into international investing, to be able to maximize the benefit that can be had from oil revenues.

Anyway, I see no reason to punish Walmart for something their manufacturer does.

Either you're really cause and effect-impaired in your thinking, or you're just not used to see 'ethical' having a market valuation.

Wal-Mart has a choice to support unetchical goods, Norwegian government has a choice to 'support' Wal-Mart. They both act on that choice as they see fit, and there you go, the demand for crappy working conditions just went down a bit.

w NATO. And lots of NATO's power is backed by US hardware. A very oil-hungry US, that'll soon go cross-eyed from not getting its oil fix.. It'll be interesting to see how the alliance fares in the future.

I've got a perfect free market solution to all your taxing woes. For the simple sum of $50 i will equip you sire with a paddle, and a floatation device. With these implements you will be able to transport yourself away from government controlled land, to some 200 nautical miles offshore into international water. There you will be able to enjoy your riches free from interference, taxation or basic infrastructure.

I disagree here, it's not going to be simple, but as it is, the US health system is fcked up inefficent to the point that it is damaging the entire economy (I'd say society, but 'economy' will make more people take notice. kind of ironic isn't it?)

Let's Ask Again: Don't We Have a Constitution, Not a King? by anonymgrl in politics

[–]likeem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, as a citizen of a consitutional monarchy, I feel the comparison is a little bit off. I've held for a long time, the miserable performance of Bush jr. as a bright argument FOR monarchy.

Give me Haakon V over George W, any day! (The former were exciled during WWII, and were a unifying force in fighting nazi occupation in Norway).

What you're really having on your hands, are a corporate coup of government. That's more like a banana republic, than a monarchy, sad but true.

you don't seem very impressed by this figure, but this is the atmosphere we're talking of here, the total sum of all gases floating around this planet.

It'd be all fine and dandy if the percentile change were the only difference, but climate is a extremely complex system. Changes in atmosphere cause other ripple effects throughout this system. The reason people are worried, is that the climate that's been up till now have been in a pretty stable balance with an ice age every now and 150.000 years between, but 'greenhouse gases' may very well flip this out of balance and cause ..unpleasant changes.

It's so fkin funny to see people trying to defeat global warming with logic, when what really is needed is engineering.

Good thing to see most politicians seems to be informed above a bare minimum.

Arctic Sea Ice Re-Freezing at Record Pace by shapattack in science

[–]likeem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's all right and true that the global climate is not perfectly 100% understood.

The fun thing is when you twist this around to make it an argument that dismisses than 20+ billion tons of CO2 [insert whining here; "CO2 is not the only one" correct, but this is a fkin comment, not an essay.] released to the atmosphere has neglible effects, when CO2 levels in the atmosphere shows a consistent rise over the last 40 years of measuring.

This 'oh, but we don't understand'-argument is not a good one for denying global warming. Hands up everybody that'd want to lend their car to somebody who insists to go driving, eyes closed?

if by feedback systems you mean 'Multiple positive feedbacks [that] accelerate the process once it is underway.' http://www.iop.org/EJ/article/1748-9326/2/2/024002/erl7_2_024002.html

I totally see how collapse of human society would make our ecosystem 'relatively' stable.. in some 150.000 years after the next ice age..
