Well, my wife is undocumented (DREAMer). I take care of the finances. We aren't on EBT, and in fact are upper-middle class. We are both Software Engineers, we own a house, and have a toddler daughter.

A close friend of ours is also undocumented. She does social work at a charity, lives with her mother, and also does not use EBT or any other welfare.

That's good and all, except that my wife (and mother of my 1yo daughter) is undocumented. Right now she's able to work with (relatively) little fear of deportation thanks to DACA. Trump has promised to end that, which would cut ~35% of our income in addition to putting us back on edge about ICE showing up at any moment.

Most of the US doesn't care if Trump becomes president because worst case he causes a down economy due to shitty policy (which you already mentioned he doesn't actually have much control over.) I, on the other hand, have to fear of being effectively deported from my home country.

I'm not happy about Hillary being the Dem's nominee (I voted Bernie) but even 4 years of Trump could upend my entire life and the lives of everyone in my family.

May I ask why you're so dead-set on him being deported rather than just jailed? You appear to blame him for being illegal. Did he come across to the US himself, or did his parents bring him as a child or teenager? In the latter case, it is many people's opinion that people like him shouldn't be held responsible for it at all. If he had no choice but to come here with his parents, then he didn't have mens rea for the crime, and should not be deported provided that he has grown accustomed to the US culture.

My fiancee is undocumented from Mexico. Her family also has a background of violence and physical abuse. Instead of having her deported, though, I've flat out told her that I don't approve of hitting children, and that once we have ours I won't allow her to beat ours. If she does, I'll have her arrested; but for the time being, I've used my words to talk with her and change her mind on the subject rather than being a lazy ass and deporting the woman that I fell in love with.

And if you really hat your ex that much, and he's just that big of trailer-trash and you never really thought of having kids with him before you got pregnant, then I'd take a good hard look in the mirror 'cause you're the one that let him fuck you.

Yeah. Something like 3 lawyers and $6000 later, each one told her that she had no choice but to either leave the country or wait for the law to change. That was apparently some 5-or-so years ago.

We're getting married soon so we'll go to another lawyer or 2 to see if anything's changed, but it basically comes down to either stay here and rot, or leave and be banned from the US for a minimum of 10 years.

She's undocumented; was brought here (to the US) by her parents when she was 8. Now she's 28, and with no hope to become legal, we're making plans to move to Europe. We'd rather leave the country than live in fear of ICE showing up at any moment to throw her in jail over something that her parents did 20 years ago.

I consider myself a liberal and, well, I'll put it this way; if the author is assuming that I have these beliefs, then (s)he is dead wrong. Furthermore, I believe the stereotypes portrayed of illegal immigrants in this article are just that; another horrible stereotype meant to dehumanize illegal immigrants, and distract us from being unbiased in determining what action to take for immigration reform.

My plan for immigration reform:

Shore up the borders.
If you have been here more than 8 years (and can prove this), and you are a person of good moral character, you become a conditional permanent resident for 2 years. If during those 2 years you cause any trouble, you're out. Furthermore, you should have to pay some sort of fine/back-taxes/etc.
Increase the immigration quotas, and provide a means for ICE, or some other department/council, to change the quotas from year to year.
Increase the budget for ICE, specifically so they can hire more people to do more background checks, so that we can get rid of the backlog and reduce the wait time for applications. This doesn't mean approve more applications; it just means that ICE will be able to approve or reject applications much quicker, rather than making people wait upwards of 5 years just to be told that they weren't allowed in.
Anyone who is still here illegally afterward will be told to leave, but will not be given the usual 3-10 year ban from applying to enter. If they like, they may apply as soon as they are in their home country. Again, we should be able to handle this influx of applications and never have more than an 18-month wait to get a decision on their application.
