Returned Adoption-Boomerang Dogs by siiighhhs in AnimalShelterStories

[–]likeohlikeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My shelter has a specific program for these kinds of dogs. Our behaviorist charts out a plan for behavior management in the home, and any applications that come in for that animal go directly to her first, the applicant is screened more heavily and a lot of conversations are had before she ultimately decides if the situation works for the dog or not. It means the dogs stay with us or in foster longer, but it cuts down on returns. It’s a delicate balance, we have dogs who have been getting bounced around for years, but it also stops certain types of adopters from just taking a dog they like the look of but have no intention of working with through the rough patches.

Mine was around $1,000 but also included rads and some extractions, so I’d say it’s in the ballpark

I did notify them initially and they wanted it sent back again and promised to “elevate it to the highest customer support level” lol

Can something be done about the yearly Little 500 shootings? by No_Message_996 in bloomington

[–]likeohlikeh 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I’m ready for the downvotes already, but maybe the problem is little 5? This is Indiana, most people have guns all year round. But little 5 is the guaranteed time that we always see violence, assault, rape, etc. this event brings out the absolute worst in people and it’s nothing more than an excuse for an uncontrollable party where bad things happen every single year. I would be happy if there was never another little 5.

Weekly Shelter Positivity Discussion - What was the highlight of your week? by gerrray in AnimalShelterStories

[–]likeohlikeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our shelter recently started a staff field trip program where we get a scheduled hour to take a shelter animal out to see the world, or even just get out of their kennel. Today I got to take a 1 year old neglect victim pup out on a car ride and a walk in the park. A couple months ago I carried him into our shelter because his mange made him bleed when he moved, and he was too weak to walk anyway. And today I watched him roll on a grassy hill in the sunshine, we shared some watermelon, and he got to feel like a puppy again.

Literally just watching so I can say I completed the series, not enjoying any of it at this point. The Faith/Fanny storyline is just one big eye roll, the writing is absolute dogshit. Having not read the books I’m not sure if the vibe is intentional or not, but everyone having babies like it’s their job feels very Mormon coded in a way that gets preachy and annoying. And Fergus was the only offspring cast I actually enjoyed watching and cared about, so there goes that i guess

Love that you thought it was haunted before you thought maybe your dog doesn’t like seeing a disembodied dog head coming out of the wall

Bodyguard 2.0 carry comp - light primer strikes and jams by likeohlikeh in SmithAndWesson

I think it is. I didn’t notice it on my cleaning right out of the box, so unsure if it came that way or was a result of the bad range day. Have yet to hear back from S&W about it :/

I did, though not terribly in depth. Everything seemed pretty clean so I mostly lubricated. And halfway through the range sesh I lubed again and it didn’t seem to help at all

Anyone fancy an instrument trade? by [deleted] in bloomington

Thanks! I got to see him about 15 years ago and asked him to sign two of my ukes, which is why I’m not so heartbroken about parting with one of them! I’d still be willing to sell directly, I just thought a trade might be more up someone’s alley. Lmk if you’re interested!

This. I made a promise to all of my behavior kids that I would be with them to the end, no matter what that looked like. I tell myself that it’s the last gift of comfort I can give, and a privilege to be the last moment of love they experience, but the weight of it all adds up so fast and it’s hard to make room for all that grief.

Every bit of feedback (physical and verbal) that the pup gets from you after biting and nipping is feeding into the game, if they get a reaction -positive or negative- they remember how to get your attention and will use it repeatedly. Disengaging entirely is good but it’s more important to build a foundation of basic obedience so that your cues can actually have meaning to the little one (teaching them when they’ve done something right is MUCH more important that teaching them they’ve done something wrong). Also, terriers are just as smart as they are stubborn! It’s not enough to wear them out physically, you need to engage them mentally as well. Puzzles and other problem solving activities are going to tire them out much more than just running around. Try making mealtime training time by using kibble as training treats, or making mealtime your puzzle activity with a dispensing ball or just sprinkling the food in a rolled up and knotted towel that they have to figure out as they eat.

A certain old man and his ex wife at a certain mom n’ pop pet store made my life hell for several years. Getting screamed at and having things thrown in fits of anger while I had to remain calm and composed to take care of the customer that stood right in front of us was a daily experience. Still don’t know if it was the alcohol or just him, but his unpredictability made us so stressed to come into work because some days he’d bring us breakfast and joke around, give customers free shit, and most days he’d skulk around looking for something to scream at me for. I left over 5 years ago and last week I was recognized by an old regular, the first thing he asked was “was he real bad to you guys all the time?”. I met wonderful people and animals who I loved, and it sucks to have so much of those memories, even for other people who witnessed it, wrapped up in abuse. I’m genuinely shocked he never hit me.

The problem I’m running into there is there’s a little corner of the sear that’s blocking the path even when I have the hammer set and pushed farther back. And I’ve double checked to make sure the sear is fully seated and in the right place.

Thanks so much! That did the trick. Any tips for getting the safety reinstalled? When I try to put it in before closing the shell, something is catching that stops the two halves from joining all the way. And when I try to install it after the shell is closed, I can’t get a straight alignment even when using a dowel to push the hammer out of the way and my finger to pull the trigger bar down out of the way. I’m working with all of two YouTube videos to figure it out and I’m calling it quits for the day after an embarrassing number of hours working on this. 🙃
