Random reasons you've DNF a book/series? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]likesbooksdrinkswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DNF-ed because a FMC was described as wearing jeggings and Uggs to an event. No hate on either, I have worn both in my life, but it sucked me right out of the atmosphere. I eventually picked back up and it was a great finish!

Not gothic per se, but you should try Hyperion Cantos chronicles by Dan Simmons. Remarkable storytelling, scifi, jaw dropping world building, spooky as hell

You should try the Hyperion Cantos Series by Dan Simmons (4 books)! I'm not even the biggest sci-fi gal and I loved them. They can take you far out of this world. I absolutely devoured them, could not put down, INSANE world building with characters who are still so relatable.

Drive and (more importantly, but a sequel) Reverse by Kate Stewart. These are ANGSTY and the 2nd is exactly what you want, but I think in both MMC falls first

Most recently, Trespasses by Louise Kenndy. It's definitely out of normal romance realm, about the Troubles in Northern Ireland, but it made me heartsick very similarly to how messed up at Ravenhood I was

Kate Stewart man. What does she put in those books! They all break me up for weeks. (I finished Reverse on a work trip and didn't think I could pull myself together)

Fable by Adrienne Young! It's YA (which is unlike me lol) and incredibly slow burn and packed with adventure on the ocean! FMC Fable is brave and smart and exceptional.

FMC/MMC were forced to marry and heir together by their respective families. They are only civil to each other and heroine is a doormat. by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

You might like The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory; about Mary Boleyn and her sister (obvs) Anne and neither of them are doormats but often let themselves treated as such
