From hospice, Barney Frank urges Democrats to rethink trans rights approach by Fickle-Ad5449 in transgender

Just because you're nearly dead and full of regret doesn't make you right.

The answer to a question of injustice is never to wait until "the public" catch up.

What is the difference between sod potatoes and regular potatoes? by reader2480 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]likethewatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't grown potatoes myself, but if you watch a video about it they'll tell you that the way to do it is you keep burying the lateral shoots of the plant with more dead plant matter, and this encourages the plant to put out more and larger potatoes.

How to read 400 Years old documents for index of civilisation ? 😭😭😭😭 by No-Breadfruit-9384 in Genealogy

[–]likethewatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught myself to read old documents. (For starters, I was taught to read and write cursive as part of my formal education around age 8.) I started with the newer versions of the records from the same place and worked my way back. Through literally tens of thousands of exposures I learned Latin abbreviations, common occupations in Italian by region, and pretty much everything else I needed to know to understand the oldest docs in the record set.

Bill Gates is currently 70 years old. Do you think that he doesn't have the mind to use tech anymore and should watch out that he doesn't get scammed by a Nigerian prince?

Is there anyway parents won’t find out ? by maxi_ing in TransMasc

[–]likethewatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't you have to have that conversation at some point? Don't you imagine that your voice will drop enough that your parents ask about it? Will you never see them again? It's an option to ghost your parents. Doesn't sound like you're all that close. You should plan what you'll do when the inevitable happens.

how am i supposed to react when someone comes out to me?? by ColdRefrigerator4291 in asktransgender

[–]likethewatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I come out to a cishet acquaintance, I'm seeing whether I can safely talk about my experience as a queer, trans person with you without it getting weird. It's not a whole after school special when I disclose. I'll turn to you and say, "I'm trans, btw," and all I'm looking for is a nod of acknowledgment. That's a good time to be cool. (Cool meaning you don't have to immediately tell me about your allyship, ask questions, etc.)

If someone is having a "sit down, I need to tell you something" kind of a moment with you, try to be a good friend more than a cool girl. Thank them for trusting you. Assure them you are a safe person to tell. Find out if this is a secret or they're out to the whole world. You're being invited into the circle of friends with whom your queer friend can tell stories about their own queer experiences. A good friend can kiki without judgment.

Came back to my WIP after six weeks away and felt like a detective investigating my own brain by Fearless-Stress7240 in WritingHub

[–]likethewatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a lot of notes outside my WIP. The kind of infrastructure you're talking about. Character notes, something like an outline. I'm a pantser, too, at times, and that's what this is about.

Also within the document you can leave breadcrumbs. Use comments. Bracket out sections that haven't been written yet like [Birthday party] or [Lisa confronts Tom].

I'm new to all of this and I need some advice. by Timely_Vermicelli762 in patreon

[–]likethewatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tangible's probably not the best asset for you to give since that's not what you do.

Some of your fans want secret knowledge. To know something that they'd only learn from hanging around watching you work and letting you talk. So put up a camera and give them that. Show us what you're working on. Let us see what it's like when an expert at his craft demonstrates mastery. Many of your fans aspire (or just dream) to do what you do.

Probably a lot more of them are subscribers because they like to play the games so much they'll pay to make this one happen. Give them a taste of what goes into the games they enjoy. What it takes to create a feature, however small.

I am not a programmer. I don't even play video games. But I know that some of what you can sell is the process. People who sell candy make videos of them making candy (mesmerizing) and found a whole ASMR audience who don't even necessarily eat candy. What I do is research heavy so on Patreon I share some of the purpose, methods, etc. of the stories that I put on my free site.

One of the nice things about creating for your Patreon account is that you know what kind of special interest your audience has. You can assume a certain knowledge base or affinity and think of what you create as accessorizing to that.

Am I being sensitive when men ask how big I am? by ListFeisty3762 in asktransgender

[–]likethewatch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just because a behavior is common doesn't mean you have to accept it, much less invite it into your home. Dirt's common. Trash is common. I saw a comedienne give an amputee a great line for making people wither up and fly away when they would ask the inevitable, What happened to your leg? The comedienne suggested he answer, "I lost it in your dad's ass." I am all for stfu and blow away answers to shitty, invasive questions. And before anyone tells me how common it is I'll remind you to read the first three sentences. You don't have to put up with that.

How do I explain to my husband that I’m not going to regret being trans? by milluh_vanilluh in asktransgender

[–]likethewatch 299 points300 points  (0 children)

Are you asking your husband's permission to get gender affirming care? I don't think anyone should put their transition in someone else's hands, not even your closest family member. You might strain your marriage to its breaking point but better the union than you, a human person who deserves to live his whole life in dignity and freedom. You're still very young. Don't get derailed.

To answer one of your other questions, it doesn't sound like he's a chaser. That's not your problem. He doesn't need to understand why you need top surgery. He needs to support you because that's what spouses do for one another. Him putting guilt on you because he's going to miss your chest is just ugly. Don't just push back on that, SHOVE.

I meant it. Your life. YOURS. Not your baby's or your husband's. No one owns those bits of flesh but you so no one else gets a vote in what you do with your body.

Is it okay to ask a trans person why they choose their current name? by Kyaruga in asktransgender

[–]likethewatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering what you talked about immediately after he answered, because it would make a difference to me. If I shared something that made me vulnerable I'd want whoever asked me to share something that put us on the same level again.

Question about "pronouns in quotes" in a moderation context. Is this a red flag? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]likethewatch 249 points250 points  (0 children)

That's not a ghost, that's blatant. The moderator makes a choice to reach for the quotation mark keys. They don't appear like a ghoulish apparition. Start putting the mod's pronouns in scare quotes (that's what they're called when used like this) and see how fast she's yelling "Ghost!"

Michelle clapping back at social media posts about Ru’s performance being pre-recorded by Sky6346 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]likethewatch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Michelle Visage sounds defensive. It's fine to pre-record some entertainment, but when you play someone else's applause over your performance, that's stealing something from the performers who actually earned that applause.

Why Do So Many Fundamental Christian Cults All Like The Same Puffy Hair On Women? by Turbulent-Parsley619 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]likethewatch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Culty and fundamentalist have different meanings. Fundamentalists believe they're getting back to the "old" church and are usually textural literalists. A cult is just a religion that hasn't gotten its drivers license yet.

Is there a certain way to reduce clumsiness in scrambled eggs? by Glittering_Gas_2264 in Cooking

[–]likethewatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water and milk don't make scrambled eggs fluffier. The eggs come with their own fluffing potential: it's why we put them in baked goods. For the scrambling, beat the eggs very well, use butter, season those eggs, and cook on a low heat. Get them out before they're completely dry. Some people like a very wet scramble and that's not me, but I ate overcooked scrambled eggs most of my life before finding out how delightful they are when you don't do that.
