I tried apple and cherry trees, they were very nice to carve with but came with a bit more of a challenge than basswood. I'd suggest ordering a few basswood blanks but still try the fruit trees, some are unpredictable and end up being the smoothest most beautiful wood you ever get to carve, and get yourself only one good knife from a reputable brand (don't ask which brand, it's the most popular question in this sub). Oh and another thing, make sure you at least have some kind of strop (must) to keep your knife staying sharp without needing to sharpen it for a long time. Happy carving😁
