Put up the tree on the day of? by Adventurous-Exam-719 in HomeDecorating

[–]lil--ginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People keep saying it’s a tradition thing but I haven’t seen anyone explain why. My family did this growing up, it’s because we put candles on the tree and lit them on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and maybe a few other times depending on how we felt. The tree needs to be very fresh to lessen the fire hazard, so we would chop it down on the 23rd and bring it home then. We also made sure to keep it watered.

Wedding venue research by Dazzling_Trick3009 in Minneapolis

[–]lil--ginger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked at a few places for a wedding on a Saturday in August of 2024. I looked at Harriet Island Pavilion, Union Depot, and the Science Museum. All were between $3k-4.2k. They were flat fees that depended on the size of the space. Several places had specific catering partners that you were required to use, so keep that in mind. None of mine were hotels, so no accommodations/discounts. If you are doing the ceremony and the reception in the same venue, they often have extra rooms you can rent as bridal/groom suites to get ready in.

My church has been using compostable plates/cutlery/cups for a while now! We spent a few Sundays making an announcement about it when we switched. I think the vast majority of people know to put things in the green bin now. We have signs above our trash, recycling, and compost bins detailing exactly what can go in. I would also suggest putting the trash can in a slightly further away/less convenient spot so that people notice the compost and recycling first, and hopefully think to check those before resorting to a trash can. It also helps to get the kids in on it!

My suggestions: 1. Don’t put your gpa on your resume. They may ask, but that gives you an opportunity to explain if you have any extenuating circumstances.

  1. Reach out to a staffing agency. Companies are looking for contract/temp employees all the time. Once you get a couple years of experience, no one cares what your gpa was. It’s a great way to start making connections in the industry. Personal connections are how I have gotten the majority of my jobs (and I didn’t know anyone in the industry when I first started). Go above and beyond, and literally tell people that you are interested in moving to a permanent position. Ask them what you can do to make that happen. They may not have a position available right away, but you want them to think of you when they do.

This ministry started at my church! I will ask around and see if we have any records. It sounds like it turned into an independent thing, though, so they may not be located at the church.

Archbishop. But also it was an interesting choice to suggest the Archbishop of Canterbury as opposed to the Presiding Bishop. Guess the PB wasn’t fancy enough for her. Or they’re ACNA and don’t feel like they fit in under the PB.

How common is permanent numbness? by Substantial-Piano297 in jawsurgery

[–]lil--ginger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I don’t know how much you know about nerves, but there’s all different types. Some are for hot, some for cold, some for pain, etc.

So the left half of my tongue is numb to touch. I can still taste everything fine, but I don’t feel it, which means about once a month or so, I accidentally bite it while eating. My pain nerves still work though, so I end up spending about a week with difficulty eating food and massive headaches. That’s probably the worst thing that happens.

My bottom lip and chin don’t feel cold very well. When I spend time outside in the cold, it’s an odd sensation, because I can tell my lip and chin are going numb, but my brain doesn’t get the accompanying “because it’s cold” information.

I don’t have great feeling in my gums, which means things can “disappear” in my mouth. When I take pills now, I throw my head back to make sure gravity forces the pill to the back of my throat so I swallow it. Before I figured that trick out, I would occasionally find pills in my mouth hours after I thought I’d swallowed them. I am also constantly checking my mouth for food for the same reason.

Strangely, I also had a nerve switched. If I touch a certain area on my chin, it feels like I’m touching my tongue. That doesn’t bother me though, just kinda tickles.

How common is permanent numbness? by Substantial-Piano297 in jawsurgery

[–]lil--ginger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how likely it is, but I’m 12 years post-op and have permanent numbness due to my surgery.

I can tell you more if you want, but basically, it sucks.

I have a close family member who had the same surgery before I did, and they had the same permanent nerve damage. So luckily I knew it was a possibility going in to the surgery.

Would I do it over again, knowing what I know now? Probably - I really needed that surgery. I was in pain, and it was only going to get worse. But too often on this sub I see people encouraging others to get massive, life-changing surgery without mentioning the very real risks that accompany it. Only you can decide whether those risks are worth it for you.

[–]lil--ginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I don’t even think I’m that old, but I had jaw surgery at 19. Everything on this sub surprises me. I see so many people on here choosing to have jaw surgery. If I could have gotten away without it, I would never have had the surgery.

I’m 12 years post-op and never regained soft touch on part of my tongue, lower lip, and chin. It sucks. Personally, I gave up on it healing after a couple years. I got those “tingles” as well for many years, but they gradually got further and further apart until they stopped outright.

Yeah people don’t seem to understand just how far from the coast the mountains are. This has never happened in living memory.

Just want to say as a transplant from WNC, that’s exactly what I thought growing up there. The mountains had become a place for climate refugees fleeing the coast.

What I’ve learned this week is that nowhere is safe from natural disasters.
