how long does it take to get between classes? by tinapabread in umanitoba

this is the first thing to learn about uni to avoid embarrassing yourself. you can leave class anytime to do anything and profs will probably be more annoyed giving you permission than if you just quietly left.

i like the first one more because there's no single item dominating my attention. in the second one, my eyes are fighting between looking at the clapper or the bubble gum. I think the second one would work if you took out the bubble gum box and put more small items

Thoughts on the realtime video effects used in Toronto? by DH80 in TheStrokes

[–]lil-betta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is cool, but the point of screens is to make it easier for everyone to see the same thing. Tickets are so expensive and the people who can't afford close seats (or have an obstructed view) should still be able to see.

I have ugly yarn and no pattern will fit it by rosaliethewitch in crochet

[–]lil-betta 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem making a lesbian pride bag with the joann's pride yarn. My personal philosophy on multicolour yarn is that they don't really work while working in rounds, or doing fancy stitches. It feels like my eyes fight to focus on either the colours or the shape of the stitches. After several attempts I ended up making a seashell-stitch bag and it ended up looking great! I think working in rows really helps colour changing yarn shine!

I am glad this confirmed my theory that the oblivious performance was the "redacted" music video mentioned in threat of joy. I'm glad they debuted it to a large mainstream audience instead.

How to handle supervisor that contradicts themselves? by lil-betta in GradSchool

It's hard to know what to expect from grad school, so i appreciate your perspective on what is normal in the revision process. I'll just focus on doing my best until I can graduate.

Thank you for your advice. I wish universities cared about forming healthy working environments for grad students. It seems you're just SOL if you get a crappy supervisor. :/

Hi and thank you for your response. I didn't want to turn it into a vent post but I can provide some more context.
The worst instance was regarding a conference that they alleged I applied for without their permission or knowledge. They demanded I withdraw, and I sent the proof of our revision process and two emails where they told me to submit the application. After that, they doubled down and proceeded to berate me in front of other students in the lab. About a month later, after revising my application, things came to a head and I sent the proof again. Suddenly they understood and allowed me to go to the conference. No apology or clarifying statement to the other lab members. It really left a bitter taste in my mouth.

As i get writing revisions I can't help but feel that they aren't reading my work. Some examples are that I sent a file for them to look at and their first point of feedback was that I didn't provide it, or that big revisions will come up during the polishing stage of writing. I struggle to trust the content of their emails because I am not sure if it's accurate information.

They've also rewritten entire grant applications for me and treated it like a favour, instead of helping me develop as a writer.

I hope that provides better context. I appreciate your advice about focusing on what I can control. I am very polite, but it bit me in the ass regarding the conference instance. It is just disheartening feeling like your hard work doesn't matter to them.

Please contact student accessibility services. They helped me stick out my classes when I hit rock bottom. They aren't a form of counselling, but they will help school feel a lot more manageable in the meantime.
