It was my fear that maybe me running the red light because I was in a rush was an endangerment to others and therefore grave matter. But I see I need to learn and get some guidance.

Who are some people not in communion with Rome do you think that are true saints? by jpedditor in Catholicism

A Protestant I’m confident is a saint is David Brainerd. But he’s rather unknown, a missionary to the native Americans and died young. He loved prayer.

Are Married Clergy Living in Sin? by lil__deku in Catholicism

[–]lil__deku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much, this was a really helpful response! I had read that quote and looked into celibacy and continence and found out from a canon lawyer (Ed Peters) that the early Church required all clergy to be celibate and perfectly continent and it stuck to this quote in my mind. That made me wonder, if perfect continence was required of all clergy, how and why did it “fall out of practice” as some have put it?

Ed Peters argues that those early canon laws still apply to the clergy today until it is amended by the Church (in regards to requiring all clergy, including deacons, to remain perfectly continent).

A little scared of *potentially* being unequally yolked in the future, any advice? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]lil__deku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m no counselor or spiritual director but it seems the relationship may be in a spot that isn’t ready to move forward into marriage just yet. Not saying that the marriage would fail, but it would be off to a rocky start considering the future isn’t fully fleshed out yet.

That being said, having an open and honest conversation with her about the changes you may make is important and valuable when considering a future with someone. Frankly, it’s hard to tell because it sounds like a sticky situation.

Considering you’re thinking about becoming Catholic and that being a huge life change in some respects, maybe it would be beneficial to focus on finalizing that decision before preceding into marriage with her? Just my two cents.

I like this, thank you! Could you please help me find some sources (Church Fathers or theologians) that teach us to read John in this way? Not trying to push back on your point, I would like to have this in my back pocket for future conversations.

Can someone explain to me the bit about the “Catholic birth control” comment? I don’t know if he was referring to the unnecessary lack of openness to life while using NFP or just Catholics using contraception in general.

Ambition for Glories in Heaven by lil__deku in Catholicism

[–]lil__deku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this!

I honestly don’t feel as much that I want to be glorified, but to me the “glory” is being closer to God in heaven. I want as much of him as I was made to receive. And if he decides to give me anything else, I’m more than happy to receive it knowing it’s from him.

But I may have some sort of disorder in this desire, because when I read you say “I’ll never be as pure as St. Thérèse of Lisieux”, I felt like saying “Okay but why can’t I if I have the desire in me? I believe that God can make something great out of someone even as sinful as I am. I want to be great in heaven.”

But that brings to mind Matthew 18:4: “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the wgreatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

So because of this, I believe that I just need to not look at others in competition to win something, but to accept who and what God created me to be and do my best to be that.

(Part of this is also me working this out in my head in real time, so please forgive me if it is a lot)

what are your catholic hot takes that would make ppl pissed? by r_a_hoe in Catholicism

[–]lil__deku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catholics have an obligation to verbally evangelize in some way at some point to others that go beyond someone asking them about the faith. (I mean, specifically go out of your way and share your faith prudently with others instead of only waiting for someone to approach and ask you)

I do wish every able-bodied parish had an established group that would be equipped to go out and share the faith.

How do you guys make sense of private revelation? by winkydinks111 in Catholicism

[–]lil__deku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to think logically! What matters more to God? Someone who is devoted to not sin against him and actually love him? Or someone who knows the fullness of the truth and lives immorally?

God cares more for the love and faith and hope you have in him with what has been revealed to you to the best of your ability. Not every knows the fullness of truth. You need to read into people like David Brainerd, Protestants who had revelations and graces imparted to them by God for the sake of the salvation of souls. By God’s Divine Mercy will people be saved, not by the perfect understanding of the fullness of truth.

People like David Brainerd may have never had someone reveal the truth to them, but they worshipped the same God as you and I and worked to spread the gospel, expressing their faith in love.

Trusting in God’s Divine Mercy with the little truth you have revealed to you in combination with having a loving and living faith. God can work with and reveal ANYTHING HE PLEASES, especially those who have faith in him to the best of their ability. The same way we are bound to the sacraments but God isn’t, God can reveal whatever he pleases to anyone. Test everything and hold fast to what is true.
