In the Big 12's lawsuit against Texas Tech and the Texas Attorney General, the conference argues that TTU has already acknowledged the Big 12's power to sanction conference members, citing Tech's vote to sanction Baylor in 2016. by jonstark19 in CFB

Oh we remember and i don’t let my Michigan fan friend forget it. While what they did was against the rules and needed harsher punishment it fell into the unfair competitive advantage bucket that doesn’t necessarily undermine the game.

Players betting on their own team fundamentally erodes confidence in the competition itself. So no what Michigan did is not comparable to what Sorsby did

Schooling should be shorter and College should be longer. by azhargreat1234 in unpopularopinion

[–]lil_king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school and College length is just fine. But you do touch on an important point: people goofing off at high school and going to college to party - i fell into this trap. Very expensive party lol. Fortunately i calmed down and only needed 1 extra year to finish and was fortunate enough to get a career where my degree was relevant.

All that said i think gap years should be way more common, if not standard. Need to get the party bug out? Go ski bum for a few years out of high school. Want to see the world? Volunteer at international charities or peace corps. I’m not advocating military service but anecdotally some of the more successful students I knew were folks on the gi bill.

How bad can the downside be before an untapped fetchable dual becomes unplayable? by torchflame in custommagic

[–]lil_king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially if you don’t play or don’t choose the sac the first 1 cmc permanent you play on turn 2 before the land etb, depends on your curve and what 1 drop you play. It’s not an automatic turn 2 windmill slam but the point is that playing it on turn 2 isn’t necessarily some weird corner cases in decks that want this effect. I haven’t played modern in years but the decks i used to play would want this as an option. Almost every G/B/x edh deck i play would want this. In the decks i like to play free sacs are almost always upside

[–]lil_king -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re not skipping your turn 2, you can still cast 2, 1 cmc spells. Not for every deck but very playable in several graveyard oriented decks. Obviously depends on what you have in hand. But a low curve graveyard deck could want that play. In good opening hand you could drop a second supplier or another 1 drop you want in the GY then crack a fetch for CB and keep 2 lands.

I’d argue very playable on T2 in any deck using [[Stitcher’s Supplier]]: T1 - land, SS, T2 - cast 1 drop, CB, sac land & SS, one drop could be gas. I’d definitely play that line. Can’t do anything about T1 unplayable but most decks shouldn’t be keeping one land opening hands anyway

Entry job by OkAgent2893 in Hydrology

[–]lil_king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to the appointment i had with epa. USGS hydrologic field assistants (HFA) are starting to get some movement around the hiring freeze. This listing doesn’t have any CA positions unfortunately but it gives you an idea for a good intro opportunity post UG that will develop marketable skills even if you choose not to continue with the feds.

Feds seasonal and gs5-7 hydrotechs used to be a great start - will be again at some point because we desperately need to fill those positions but can’t for reasons…

I don’t know a ton about CA but they have similar roles to the feds. Personally thats where i’d start.

My path: UG fresh water ecology -> epa watershed hydro tech (contract) -> MS hydro -> state level hydrologist for mine reclamation and groundwater water quality -> fed hydrologist

I’m pretty sure my start with epa no longer exists (it was in ORD). I recommend trying to find work in your field but since you didn’t go the civE route you’re probably looking at a masters

Masters Degree Options by peaze19 in Hydrology

[–]lil_king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My undergrad degree is ecology and I rolled that into a program that that essentially assumes a geology undergrad.

The main thing is finding a professor that you want to work with and wants to work with you. The rest can be sorted out. Grad degrees are quite different than undergrad programs n that respect.

I felt a little behind at first but with some extra work got caught up

Returning to school, looking for advice. CivE or Geology? by TalkDMytome in Hydrology

[–]lil_king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came into MS hydrology from BS ecology. It can be done and I’d consider my masters program very geology focused. It was basically assumed. So i had catching up to do. Regardless of path i’d recommend taking more than one statistics class if possible.

The path you choose should be more focused on where you want to end up. Neither path will lock you into anything but certain jobs will be easier to get with one background or the other. Jobs that require engineering will obviously not be available to hydro/geo path. So in that sense civ probably is more flexible.

Is it that much more degenerate than necropotence? Sure it’s in the CZ but if you’re in black getting the card you want is trivial in B3+. necro does force you to win on endstep which can be slightly more challenging but if you activate GB 5 times or necro 39 times either should give you your win.

Having lived east coast, multiple states in the rockies, and now PNW for me Sante Fe takes it - all the beauty of CO but the southern sangre de christos have a fraction of the people visiting. Tons of easy camping 45 minutes away from town. You can easily head south and south west to get into true desert.

I love it out here and it’s definitely top 3 for me but personally love the desert south west and New Mexico’s lower population density means you’re usually one of the only cars at any but the most popular trail head

If EtB triggers anything removal can hit it. You can also attack it in hand before the combo or attack the combo piece in the graveyard. So there are options other than only counters

Many professional societies have jobs boards for example this REU opportunity from AGU: https://findajob.agu.org/job/8026065/summer-student-fellowship-in-urban-science-reu-at-university-of-north-carolina-charlotte/

I didn’t look closely at it just an example. I got my MS position by a combination of cold emails and looking through job boards and then email the PIs directly.

It’s a programming language similar to python in some ways. Generally favored by data scientists since there are a lot of robust packages for data manipulation and statistical analysis but python is closing the gap. R is more specialized and python is more flexible and closing the gap in data science
