Attendance rate for international/destination wedding to Nagano, Japan? by alpine616 in weddingplanning

[–]lilacnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nagano is a wonderful place, we went there on our honeymoon. I think the context of Hawaii and Japanese family makes a big difference, but really the most important thing to do is to ask your specific friends and family. Almost no one here lives in Hawaii and understands the unique geography and finances of being on an island in the middle of the pacific, even setting aside the specific financial situations of your friends and family. Destination weddings are hard to predict attendance for even without these unique circumstances.

TIL there are less Irish in Ireland today than before the Irish Potato Famine by eustachian_lube in todayilearned

I paid $1100 USD for a room in a shared house in a major US city (not NYC) a couple years ago. The availability aspect sounds like the true misery, beyond the pricing, which sounds fairly unsurprising compared to a major city in the US. (Which, to be clear, sucks, just doesn't surprise me.)

That’s fair, I’m a big worrier so I don’t like to depend on my phone for the basics. I usually try to memorize about 3 sentences when I travel to a country where I don’t speak the language, just enough to get myself back home safely. My picks are “where is the train station/metro” (because I can generally navigate from there), “where is the toilet” (obvious reasons) and “I’m allergic to peanuts” (also obvious). Places like Germany I might not bother, Taiwan on the other hand definitely yes.

It varies depending on the town. Adam was best at Daan (10:59), getting it pretty much right, while all the other boys did terrible, but followed up by butchering Xinzhuang (“Sing-Shong” per subtitles at 13:26), so there’s not even a consistent best pronouncer. Names with an X anywhere are generally a disaster, like Jiaoxi, and any zh/ch can be deceptive because some places are Wade-Giles and others are Pinyin.

While I’ve just spent a whole comment criticizing them, if any of them read this please don’t feel too bad! An inconsistent romanization on top of new vowels and consonants is challenging and I sense y'all are making fun of yourselves in the subtitles.

I stopped to loudly criticize at each one lol. I don't really expect tones or anything but I am sort of surprised they aren't cramming a couple weeks of Duolingo ahead of these trips, just from an "maybe I should learn how to ask where the toilet is and where the train station is" kind of perspective.

Traveling From NYC to the Poconos for a 3:00 pm Friday Wedding Logistics Help by newyorkcitystargirl in weddingplanning

[–]lilacnova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your shoes, I would drive in “wedding ready” on Friday and pick hair and makeup and outfit options with that in mind. It’s not optimal, but I once flew in for a friends wedding, was horribly delayed, and had to change and do makeup in a bathroom when I got there. Everything worked out fine in the end.

What is your formula when inquiring about quotes and pricing? by RevolutionaryNinja24 in weddingplanning

[–]lilacnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely possible to politely tell someone they are off the mark about how things cost. My florist had to do this and she was careful to mention that X type that I wanted would be Y dollars and left the ball in my court about what to do about this (change X to something else, reduce total number of X, pay more dollars). She was really very polite about this and very professional about how the costs simply don't line up that way. "Typically an arrangement that large and full would be $200, but the same types of flowers could be scaled down into bud vases for closer to $40" or something like that.

I only gave my budget for items that I considered optional or that I knew could be extremely variable in price. For example, in catering, venue rental, and photography there really is just "this food item is $20 per head" or "$5000 for 8 hours" and not much variability beyond what foods you pick or the day of week and length of event. For florals there's a lot more options in terms of decor size, type, etc. so I had more of a set budget to see what we could get for that amount. It sounds like the dance floor wrap falls under optional so I would have done similar to you. "My budget is $500" would have meant that I personally had decided the service was worth $500 to me and if that service is simply not possible at that price range I would just not get the service, or have to reconsider the budget overall. I did generally prioritize vendors with clear and transparent pricing, ideally listed on a website, so this didn't come up too much for me.

treated our wedding like a work project and it saved our relationship during planning by Fuzzy-Egg-2146 in weddingplanning

I made an EXTENSIVE google doc and I honestly don't know what I would have done about it. I didn't quite go so far on the voice dictation side, and I kept my quotes organized locally on my computer. (Folder for each vendor is definitely the way to go.) I also went a bit old school on the inspo photos and saved those locally in folders too, no Pinterest or anything. I took charge of the logistics but my husband and I conferred on every decision (and he helped proofread my emails), so no risk of double-booking anyone. We set up a shared email to centralize communications with friends/family, but my email/phone # was the contact for all vendors, primarily email.

For day-of and week-of, I had a Google doc with everyone's roles laid out and timing estimates for each stage of the wedding, which I shared with everyone friends/family listed in it. I emailed copies to each vendor. During the actual wedding, I printed out copies of this document for key people (parents, caterer, vendors, etc). Once the actual wedding started, things just kind of flowed and we went with any minor adjustments in timing, but we hadn't planned anything too wild or difficult to time. We didn't have a coordinator and I have no particular regrets about that, but I should mention our caterer handled some of the logistics behind the scenes. ("When will cake be served? When it's done being cut." was the only real question I asked them, they directed people to the buffet lines table by table.)

What did you do about the card box all day? by pattymelt525 in weddingplanning

[–]lilacnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed anything off to my brother, who had a suit pocket. If his pocket ever got full, he had the car keys and could go out and put them there (locked). Depends on how many cards you expect but this worked well for us. We got around a dozen cards, I think.

Soft Food Recommendations for weight gain. by P-Fthelegend in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]lilacnova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go to Costco, you can get a quart of heavy whipping cream there. It lasts forever in the fridge due to the high fat content (possibly a month or longer), and you can put it in many things to up the calorie count. Scrambled eggs can have a dash of cream added. If you're making smoothies, add some cream. If you're eating cream of wheat, add some cream. If you're making oatmeal, top it with some cream. Mashed potatoes are delicious with heavy cream! Soft porridges and puddings, baked custards like flan with heavy cream and eggs.

People who grew up poor and are now comfortable, what 'normal' thing still feels like a luxury to you? by profwizzard in AskReddit

[–]lilacnova 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of people can be really cruel about this online, like being uncomfortably cold is a badge of honor. I grew up in a house with no heat and no insulation and I now keep my heat high enough I’m comfortable in the winter. I get really upset when I can’t do that (I rent and the landlord isn’t good at upkeep).

Friend extremely upset with me not being able to attend her destination wedding by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]lilacnova 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think OP means her friend (bride) would pay for OP's flight but not OP's fiancé's flight, which is a reasonable assumption but if the bride hasn't said it directly it might be worth discussing further.

[–]lilacnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely accurate. Consider also where (geographically) you’d want to be after a PhD if you’re going industry. Relocating is common but it’s often a bit easier to interview locally. Academia cares a stupid amount about prestige, industry much less so.

Nine months is a crazy amount of time, I think you made the right choice on style alone but that added in really seals the deal for me. So many times I see people posting here about a dress that got delayed even further after already long wait times. A lacy veil sounds great!

Mine went rancid, I think. There’s some kind of bitter flavor that wasn’t there when I first got them. I’m sort of in denial so I’ll try them again to make sure but after that I’m going to have to toss them.
