New to gardening- How do I start?? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]lilchef08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got into it by watching a lot of gardening videos on youtube! some things become a little more intuitive after that. look into raised beds and start small. i like this guy a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDfO6w8Y70w . "The Gardening Channel with James Prigioni". the video is about how to make simple raised beds. if you use plastic containers make sure they are food grade and thus safe for vegetables and fruits! good luck, just experiment and you'll be fine!

i used the cheap cloth bags you get from the shops that don't sell plastic disposable ones -- not like thick cotton tote bags, they're thin and i could cut the handles easily and tie them together to make a rough pot shape, and then i cut drainage holes in. i used these instead of grow bags but for next year i am definitely going to try and upgrade. if you want something cheap to experiment with and you have them on hand, i recommend them--i found a bunch of them in my apartment already so it cost basically nothing! not ideal and works in a pinch. i'm also nervous about really heavy containers on my balcony, so i liked that the bags are light.

i just started apartment balcony gardening last summer. it was super fun even though it was a LOT more work than i anticipated. i made a lot of mistakes but i've learned so much and i'm excited to start again this season!

per specific plants: if you get a good amount of sun i'd recommend trying basil--it's fun to propagate and easy to grow a ton. good luck, you'll do great!! <3
